Wet sanding is basically stripping the clear coat layer until your at enmal paint. most clear coats last 5 to seven years. If you choose to do this, use a 1500 or higher grit then compound the area needed.

Personally, I would not go so far as to wet sand it, it shouldn't be necessary. Find a good body shop or detailer and have them use Finesse-it II... all great body shops use it and will know exactly what it is. It's made by 3M and works miracles. Have them buff the car with this followed up by some polish and a good coat of wax. Make sure you get a guy who knows what he's doing. Like new.

Any good body shop can wet sand the paint which will bring it back to almost new for very little money.

You can likely take care of it yourself with the right equipment. Go check out the articles on www.fca-se.org/concours.htm

especially #3 and #4, and the separate article on Orbital Polishers.

I've been very happy with doing that kind of stuff myself... WITHOUT previous experience. Feel free to email me directly.

Russ...unfortunately, I do not know of any names to recommend in your part of the country...so I won't be of much help there. With regards to the paint restoration -- I recently had the 308 completely done over, and the results were fantastic to say the least!

I found out about the detail guy via word of mouth from a local Ferrari owner and friend. He works out of his truck, and works alone. He has spent a great deal of time over the last few years perfecting his skills, and works primarily on classic and high-end exotics. Perhaps someone in your local Ferrari club can suggest someone with similar skills. You'll get a good feel of how competent a potential detailer is by how well he or she can spot paint flaws, tell the history of the paint, etc. when they initially inspect the car.

In my case, he spent about 3 - 4 days start to finish, which included: washing the car, cutting out all paint imperfections along the trim / molding, taping off certain areas, removing any necessary trim / emblems / hardware, compound / wet sanding / block sanding, re-wash car, polish / buff (with lights), wax / buff (with lights), and finally a complete detail of exterior, interior, and engine bay. The 308 looked 10 years younger afterwards. Hopefully, with proper paint care, this will last me another 10 - 15 years before a new paint-job will be required. Total cost was around $550.00 -- and I always like to give a good tip as well.

(Incidentally, the pic in my profile is of the 308 BEFORE the detail work was performed -- haven't had a chance to snap some new ones yet, but will do so soon and update.)

Believe me, it is back-breaking, elbow cramping, tedious work -- and after 4 days of observation, I was more than happy to pay up. He's done a couple of my other cars since, with the same superb results. It has been well worth it to me.

Hope this info. helps you in your search.

The red paint on my 328 has a few swirls and a couple scratches but otherwise is in great condition. I am considering haveing a specialist go voer the entire car getting rid of a few swirls and the scratches. Anyone have any recommendations about haveing someone experienced do this. I am reluctant to do this myselk because of my lack of experience. If you had this done were ttthe results worth the cost?
