I managed to see one of these the other day for the first time in my life at a Ferrari dealer.....
It really is everybit as beautiful in the metal as it is in pictures. Just sooo sexy - so dramatic, without the wildness of the F50/F40.....
They got the shape soo right. This car started the love affair for me.

Would agree value-wise, Ross. 288 and F50 are the only semi-recent street models that currently sell above their original MSRP (excluding 360's). While it likely offers a bit more ground clearance and is perhaps less visually flashy than F40/50, not sure that makes the 288 more "liveable". Though wouldn't mind finding out.

My ex-308GTS also had black A-pillars (but it was repainted so I don't know if it came that way originally). You can see the same thing in the "4 in a row" picture -- some A-pillars are black, some are body-color.

you could argue that the gto will hold its value better than most other fcars built in the last 30 years, including the f40 and f50. firstly, there were only 272 built, which makes it the lowest production of any model since the run of daytona spiders (122), and certainly fewer than the f40 at 1315. secondly, designed during enzo's active tenure (gotta be worth something). thirdly, its more liveable than the f40 or f50 (i would imagine) since it more of a 'normal' car (but thats just my opinion.)

Notice that the A-pilars are painted black on the sides of the windshield. I wonder why that is? Looks fantastic!

Heres another nice shot of those GTO mirrors.
($3000+) from the dealer if you can get them!
I have a pair of them if anybody wants them for their 308 or 328. (Copied off the 288 originals).
$699 for the pair. c

I will have to say...the recess in the fender for the scuderia badges was not perfect. The shape of the recess did not match the shape of the badge as good as it should have! But then Im pretty picky. (I'm just jealous) c

I photoshop erased the cars licence plate just for fun, and for the owners privacy. Also all those funky numbers on the plates take away from the car. My wife and I were eating lunch 6 feet away from the rear if the car (on the grass) when the owner started the car and took off to show the car in a little show & tell. Heres some photos of that. The car sounded F'n awesome! Yes, I grabbed my video camera and followed the car for about 30 yards. It's not often you get to see someone actually driving a 288! car

I had never seen a 288GTO in person until the Italiano Concorso. This car is absolutely beautiful. Your pictures are really great but to see this car live is something else. Thanks for reminding me of how incredible it is.

WOW,thanks for the pics Nick.question, i'm fairly certain that most 288GTO's are red but i think MR. Agnelli got a yellow one and i have a video somewhere with a little 2 second shot of what i believe is a silver 288.i'm pretty sure it's a GTO at moroso park and not a converted 308 because it seems to have the longer wheelbase.i have also seen pics of a black F40 in England and a yellow one also in europe as well as the Sultan of Bruneis gold plated one[?].so,has anyone seen or heard of 288GTO's in other colors?i think it would look awesome[o.k. absolutely wicked]in black.imho thanks

The rear No. plate is fitted slightly off centre (sorry, pet annoyance of mine, like poorly aligned rear deck shutlines) and whats with the offcentre '1' in one pic and then it completely dissapears in the other pic?

Note the correctly 'inset' fender shields boys!

Also, as to why people like the 288 - Eddie Irvine (Ferrari F1 racing driver from 1996 - 1999) owns a 288 GTO as well as an F40, F50, and many other non-Ferrari exotic cars. He's repeatedly said in interviews that the 288 GTO is by far the most fun to drive and is his personal favorite Ferrari bacause it is such a totally uncivilized beast of a car.

Same here...

I've been infatuated with the 288 GTO for years. The only thing stopping me from owning one IS the price. It's a bit out of my league at the moment, but it's a goal I'm working on . Must admit, every time I see pics of this car it just makes my day -- gorgeous! It's like a 308 on steroids. The only word I can think of while drooling over its body lines and curves is "sensual" to the max. Unfortunately, I've never seen one "in the flesh" -- still looking though.

As far as price is concerned, I'd buy one in a heartbeat whether it was $79,000 or $300,000 if I had the means; but the price would not dictate my personal passion for this car. I feel the same way about a few other exotics too .

Price doesn't mean anything to me. The 288GTO looks badass in every sense of the word. Its the feeling when I look at the car that sparks the interest. Take the TR -- I have one, its cheap to get and damn I love it. Would not trade it for $300,000 model unless in the contract I get to buy my TR back first.

It's not the price of the car that impresses. It's because of what it is and the history. It's the first, modern, limited edition car produced by Ferrari. It looks like a 308 but it's not (longitudinal engine and gearbox and about 4 inches longer). The intent was to build a car for Group B Rally. However that racing series got cancelled for safety concerns so the car didn't get to race. The engine was supposedly developed for a Lancia race car originally. As the first "supercar", interest in this car was intense and prices went sky-high.

No. We have loved this car since the first day we heard/read about it back in the mid-80's. Based on 308 styling, it featured all the bad-ass mechanicals you've read about. Like Andrew said--it was Ferrari's answer to other supercar pretenders. Exotic, beautiful and rare. The price only reflects how desireable it is, not the other way around.

Gage, yes, the 288 GTO engine bonnet opened towards the rear of the car. I have a video of me in a GTO at Roebling Road a bunch of years ago. I had no idea what I was instore for. It was AWESOME! Even the radio and speakers said Ferrari GTO on them! Super fast car, but nothing like a F40!

Was there an engine lid design change? I have a poster of the 288 an it shows on the lid near the back glass, a raised panel. Most of all the other pics I've seen just had the vents and depressed panel.

Just wondering.

Warren, I hope I didn't make you feel bad. It's just that I can remember my first reaction to the car while researching. It's my greatest discovery. I just thought it would be like giving away the ending of a movie. Sorry, man.

The price reflects the fact of only 272 of these being sold and how rare it is.. It was sold in 1984, the same year the Testarossa came out..
The dealer were asking only $84.000 and at its peak price in the late 80's owners were selling them for will over 1 million.. Than is one hot model

do some searches through the archives on 288 GTO.

it's an exceptionally rare car, and basically is the logical predecessor to the F40 and F50.
