Well, I traded in my 2001 911 Cabriolet for a Seal Gray 2002 Turbo. I told the wife I was going to sell my Ferrari to pay for it. Hopefully, I won't find a buyer :-)

Thanks for setting me straight, ACW. I guess it's a matter of how much of that pressure you hold on to. I've spent quite a bit of time driving both cars on the street and, though I love the Ferrari, it feels as though the 911 Turbo would kick its your-know-what on a track. I was actually surprised to see the braking stats in R&T.

I've seen an Autocar test where they got the 360M to do 0-100mph in 8.8s - which was a few tenths slower than the Lamborghini Diablo GT that was also featured in the same issue.

I have been driving my 996 turbo for the last 18months almost daily mostly on the street but also on the track.

The turbo lag is minimal for a turbo, but yet, it exists.

When you start to floor the car, whatever the RPM, there is some turbo lag for maybe 1 second or so. Much better than the 964 or 993 turbo but still, there is a lag which does not exist on normally aspirated cars. I don't know any turbo car which does not have turbo lag. It takes some time for the pressure to build.

You can maybe better see that by looking at your boost gauge although the torque feel is usually pretty clear.

RPM does not really matter. What matters is how heavy you have been on throttle when you suddenly ask for more.

Peak torque on the 911(996) Turbo is available from 2700rpm. While I've never driven the car on a track, I can tell you that on the street I've never found myself getting frustrated with the car in ANY way. Power delivery is smooth and I've never detected "turbo lag" like in older Porsches. On a track, however, I guess one could find themselves in a situation where they were running far enough below 2700rpm (tight corner?) and might experience a slight delay under hard acceleration?

What's the turbo lag like on the TT? Do you find yourself getting frustrated waiting for it to kick in?

Well yeah numbers are numbers, however, I drive both all the time and can share that they are about as fast. The TT has more torque when the turbo kicks in, however, it has some turbo lag that obviously the 360 does not have. This makes the 360 somewhat more flexible.

About breaking, I drove both at Laguna Seca which is hard on breaks, and I found the TT stock setup to be slightly more effective.

Still, I think the 360 driving experience (sound, steering precision, suspension) is more fun.

Road & Track

Ferrari 360 Modena (8/99):
0-60mph = 4.3sec
0-100mph = 10.2sec
1/4 mile = 12.8sec @ 112.5mph
top speed = 189mph
braking(from 60mph) = 110ft
braking(from 80mph) = 188ft

Porsche 996 Turbo (11/00):
0-60mph = 4.0sec
0-100mph = 9.2sec
1/4 mile = 12.4sec @ 115.6mph
top speed = 190mph
braking(from 60mph) = 119ft
braking(from 80mph) = 208ft

360 = better braking
996TT = better acceleration

fyi - the 996TT market has gotten quite soft over the past few months. allocations are plentiful, there's new stock on the lots, and the used market has slipped (10K miles 2001 units can be had low 90s now).

acw - i haven't looked at the specs recently, but i think the 996TT will give a 360 well more than a run for its money.

doody.

Mark,

The 996TT is one of the best car I ever owned. More discreet than a Ferrari and yet as fast if not faster than a 360. The engine noise is a bit boring, the car is too high and suspensions are a bit too soft but overall it is a wonderful everyday car.
