Well, since you asked... Hiring one or two bodygaurds may do more harm than good. If you really want good security, it is expensive and it is an inconvenience. They will probably not want 3 guys (at the very least) always hanging around telling them what they can and can't do. If they get a bodygaurd or two it may cause them to have a false sense of security and take greater risks. Combine this with the high-profile nature of having a couple of bodygaurds hanging around and you could get into trouble quick. USSS agents or Deputy Marshals are the BEST. If I had to hire former agents or deputys, I'd look for guys 35 to 45 years old (no wash-outs or burn-outs), check their referrences well, and be sure they had Protective Services Training from FLETC. My brother was an executive for a major company and was in charge of their south american operations and was based in Mexico City. They gave him two choices, armed body guards and an armored limo, or a 15 year old toyota that was all beat up. He took the Toyota, he dressed down till he got to the office, and did everything possible not to draw attention to himself. His home was a compound with 2 sets of walls and armed guards at the gates. I can not imagine living that way, but he did it for 3 years. He used to be in charge of the companies operations in Iran and lived there for 10 years before the Shah was kicked out. I think I will stay in Kansas............. |

William: A good friend of mine use to have a house in Rio and Buneos Aires. While I never visited him there, they ended up selling the homes because they were afraid of the violence. Each home was a fortress with lots of guns, high walls with barb wire, and attack dogs (you do want to get attack dogs - at least two), and private security. This was not much of a life style so they sold the homes and purchase a nice little shack in Germany. They also had armored cars for each house. Kidnapping was their main concern since my friend's father was/still a big time CEO. |

Be carefull about "bodyguards" in foreign highly unstable or corrupt countries. Its far from clear if you can trust them or if hiring them spot lights you to local thugs. They are in many cases the same people. This was the case when I delt with my J-V's in Russia. Our guards were "thourghly" vetted by our coporate security but still we wondered.

William; I had to have body guards and drivers in several Countries such as ZA as it was mandated by my company. I would check with the head of corp security at Hubbell, and they always know of the companies that they deal with for those types of assignments. |

I have worked with a fair number of clients who use these things, and on occasion, have had to have a little coverage myself, when involved in some controversial cases. Gavin DeBecker made a career out of this for celebs, and emphasizes smarts over muscle; i have also worked with a few ex-secret service types that have a business that does this. But, on the ground in a foreign country, i would think that you would need more than just a gun-totingthug, or even a smart ex- something. There are at least in the us, big potential liability issues if your watchdog does something to somebody. So insurance is probably a good thing, too. If you want, email me and i'll put you in touch w/my contacts. |

I can send you one of my 3 guys. I usually need only one, then two when going to the clubs, as you well know I always get in trouble. ;-) Still smiling about the photos...LOL Seriously you should make your parents reconsider. No bodyguard is able to stop somebody that wants to get them.

I am in the process of hiring bodyguards for my parents who insist on living in Buenos Aires, Argentina over the winter. If u have been following the news u know the country is just a few steps short of civil war & their is a massive crime wave including a huge upsurge in theft, muggings, murders, & kidnappings. This is why I relocated to Miami. So I have a very good trusted friend who will fulfill the role of bodyguard. What details should I know about hiring, etc ? Thanks |
