Brian,
The courses are taught over 2 days.
The Pilota course is held at the Mugello circuit. Day one is maily theory, car control, skid pad, doughnuts, emergency braking, car control techniques, and racing lines. Day two is all trak work, racing lines, chasing the instructors, short circuit, full circuit. All training modules except the doughnuts (Alfa 155) are conducted in a Ferrari with two way comms sets.

Advance Pilota is at the Fiorano circuit. Day 1 (I am reading from my program sheet): Review of the driving fundamentals and toe-heel, theoretical workshop, advanced sports driving: drivelines on the track, track with pace-cars with on board data acquisition, braking in a corner on wet, oversteer on wet track, track runs, visit to factory. Day 2: Theoretical workshop, more track work with data acquisition, oversteer at skid pad, differantiated braking on low grip asphalt, track runs, timed runs...more timed runs.

There are 4 Pilota and 4 Advanced Courses a year. 16 participants per course with 10 instructors. For this year there will be 6 360 Modena (3 manual, 3 F1) 4 575 Maranello (2 manual 2 F1).

How good are the instructors? Great...during my basic Pilota course there was: Ivan Capelli (former Ferrari F1 driver, early 90s), my instructor who finished 2nd in the world go-kart championships....the winner that year was Michael Schumacher....what can I say.

How hard is it to get into the course? I have been waiting 2 years to get into the Advanced course....but I think there may be more allocation to the US than to Asia.

At the end of the course...the participants get a certificate and Shoei Racing helmet with Ferrari logo.

There you go Brain...

Manu,

My car is not street legal though if I wanted it to be it could be made street legal. My car was set up for the 2001 Challenge Series but for personal reasons I could not compete that year.

The weight is saved from taking out the interior, head lights, carbon fiber bumpers, lighter exhaust w/out catalytic converters or emmissions equipment, smaller battery and a few other minor things.

The brakes are 14 inch Brembo's as found on the 333SP's that ran at Lemans and Daytona. The suspension is completely adjustable and is much too harsh to use for street use. Also the kit comes with two exhaust and mine which is set up for competition w/ test pipes also would not be street legal here in the US. It measures about 110 db's.

Regards,

Jon

Jon,

Is your F355 Challenge road legal then? It is a F355 challenge, with 2 seats? Fantastic!

The idea of piloting an ACTUAL RACE CAR on the road is highly appealing. Especially one that can take on an F50! Hmmm... This could well end up with me reaching into my wallet.....

Anyhow, I think I may have seen an road going F355 with a challenge kit... Has the following stuff found its way onto your car?
Speedline Corse One piece wheels
APRacing Front brakes
Rear Wing
Buckets and harnesses...

Another thing Jon, does the weight loss come from removing bits such as A/C and power windows etc or is the chassis itself lightened and what changes do they make to the suspension/exhaust?

Wow, Questions? Absolutely...

What is taught in the course?
How good are the instructors?
How many students are at each event?
How much track time do you get?

How hard is it to get into the course?

I'd love to hear from some people who have been,
Sounds like a great excuse to time my next trip to Italy ;^),

Manu,

The 355/360 Challenges also have much better brakes and suspension over the road cars including the F50 and F40. The slicks probably make about half the difference and the suspension, brakes, and lighter weight do the rest. In the case of the 355 weight is about 100-150 pounds lighter vs. street car. In the 360 Challenge it's huge, nearly 400 pounds.

There was no road kit for the 355 you mention. In fact all 355 Challenge cars were standard road cars which were either kitted out at the factory or the dealer. The factory cars had no handbrake, second seat etc... But if you had the dealer install the kit then you had the choice of what to keep and what to get rid of.

Here in the United States the only 355 Challenge cars that could be made road legal were the 95 models and a very small run of 96 models. The 95 models could be ordered with catlaytic converters and run street legal. they also had VIN# numbers which all later years did not have.

I had my 95 street 355 converted to full challenge specs with only the addition of a second seat.

The Pilota course is open to Ferrari owners only. It is offered thru the authorized dealers. There are basically two courses...the Pilota held at Mugello, and the Advanced Pilota held at Fiorano. One has to go thru the Pilota before one can be accepted into the Advanced. The course is conducted by the Adamitch Driving school (Ferrari authorised). I just checked, for the 2002 season. 360 F1 and standard shift, and 575 Maranello (yes!!!) will be used. The cost is about Euro 7,000 for the 2 day course. Questions?

Ooops they've just been added.
Nice one Peter.

I'll say one thing from your times Peter, the 360 Challenge is a bloody fast car!
I'm not sure now....but didn't Ferrari build a 'road kit' to allow you to put F355 Challenges on the road (extra seat, lights, handbrake blah, blah ...).

Anyone want to speculate on an F50 + slicks or even the F60....?

The Challenge cars are even faster than the F50, primarily because they wear slicks but I don't have a time.

Indeed...has anyone got a genuine 360 Modena lap time? (I think its in the 1.31 region)
The Pilota course looks excellent. Fill us in Lung!

That suprises me that the 360 and 355 challenge times are faster then the F40 and F50

Nice list Manu, just what I was looking for. Here's my list. Different sources, some from this site (Mostly Manu).

Ferrari F2002 - 0.58.378
Ferrari 360 Challenge - 1.22.4
Ferrari 360 N-GT - 1.18.9
Ferrari 355 Challenge - 1.26.5
Ferrari F50 - 1.27
Ferrari F40 - 1.30
Ferrari 550 Maranello - 1.32.528
Ferrari 575M Maranello - 1.31.512

Now, where's the 328 lap times? They must be down at 1.09 or something, right?? :-))

Ciao
Peter

Well guys...I will be at Fiorano in early May for the Advanced Pilota course. It'll be timed sessions so I'll let you know my times in the 550 and 360.

Cool list... but where's the 360? the 360 Challenge? Anyone know its times, definitively?

Anyone have a map of the Fiorano track?
Do they ever hold "track days" for the recreational Ferrari owners at the Fiorano track?

Just curious.

What is the 348 times and did they change as the model improved ? I know the 348 is supposed to be faster than a TR at Fiorano.

Porche 959: 1.37 (not certain)

Maserati 4200GT: 1.35
Ferrari 456GT: 1.35
Ferrari F512M: 1.35
Ferrari F355: 1.34
Ferrari 550M: 1.32.5
Ferrari 575M (f1): 1.31.5
Ferrari F40: 1.31.5 (Gerhard Berger!)
Ferrari F50: 1.28

Ferrari 333SP (slicks): 1.11.9

Ferrari F1/94: 1.00.31
Ferrari F2002: 58.378 (Schumi)

It should be added that: the track has been changed, some drivers are better than others, Dario Benuzzi holds most of the records, Tyre technology has come a long way, the 456GT is BLOODY FAST for a 2 tonne car, I think Schumi is into the 57 second mark with the F2002 now, erm..... anyone want to add anything???? More laptimes etc....different laptimes....other cars....??? hmmm.....
