Regarding maintenance schedule, besides the 30K major service, everything else is as common as for any other car. Oil services every 3K mi or so, etc. If you purchase the car without the 30K done, I would recommend you do it just to have a clean slate. TRs are tough cars, and besides some common electrical gremlins, there is not much that would normally go wrong with them.

Wow that is an easy deal. I would love to get one where I know the guy or someone who I trust. However, I bet I end up getting one from 1000 miles away.

We bought our 94 512TR directly from the owner, who was meticulous in maintaining the car. The car has been serviced at the official dealer for most of its life, so I can get all the service records there.

We didn't do the usual steps in buying this 512TR. We didn't do the PPI, because the mechanic that my friend recommended has serviced this 512TR for the last 8 months or so. So, he knows the condition of the car and has said it's all normal. We didn't even test drive the car before buying it, believe it or not. The car was located in a tight, narrow location and I didn't want to risk anything. We placed our faith in the owner and the mechanic.

In fact, we took ownership of the car before we even paid a penny! No deposit, no contract, nothing! The owner just transfered ownership to me and even paid the 1st year registration tax, and just said to pay him next day. Super guy he is.

In all, our 512TR buying took only 5 days (including weekend). Now, is that fast or what!

I am starting to look for a TR in the sort of near future but trying to get my head right so I don't go emotional when I see the first car I look at.

What is the maint schedule? I hear 15K, 30K. Are there others prior or between and what is the extent of them? Obviously I would like them to have been done by current owner, but what are the ramifications if he skipped them and car is running fine? Obviously the cost is one concern, but I am concerned about the mechanical issues.

How can I verify they have been done? A receipt? Is that enough. Call the shop? Call the previous owner? How do I contact them?

I guess I should do a PPI for a non biased opinion?

And lastly, how long is the buying process from teh time you see the car til you say I'll take it? I am used to typical car buying where you walk away with it that day, but with background checks, PPI's etc it could take....days?...weeks?

Do you put a deposit on car while doing checks or just gamble it will be there?
