My insurance on the 355, without a mileage limit is $700/year. Nationwide is the carrier. It is the 4th or 5th car on the policy. 100k property damage, 1k deductible, 500k liability coverage.

It definitely pays to shop the insurance, because different underwriters see things differently, so there are substantial variances in the amounts quoted. A larger deductible generally lowers the policy at about 40 - 60% for that coverage, generally a good buy.

Marcus,
you may want to check with them for higher property.
I was at awe when I found out that my insurance went only $2.00 up to upgrade from State req. $ 10,000 property to $100,000 property.

You hit a car today it is usually more than $ 10K damage.

wm hart:

What's a "blue" car?

Your story about the tree brought back bad memories. I had a 100 foot tall tree fall on my boat last year. It destroyed the boat hoist, dock, seawall, etc. My insurance company was a real pain in the *** and we're still cleaning up the mess.

The very idea of a 16 yr. old behind the wheel of a viper on the street is pretty scary. BTW i use Chubb, they are expensive but worth it. When i got my first ferrari, i hadn't had a driver's license in years (my record was clean, but i lived in NYC). We lived in Brooklyn Heights, a very nice brownstone neighborhood facing lower Manhattan. The "usual" auto insurers wanted something like 11k a year (i was a little over 40 years old at the time) to insure a 348 spyder. Chubb wound up charging less than the insurance on our volvo sedan at that time, with no mileage cap. When my wife's 740i got broadsided recently by a lincoln "Blue" car, they just dealt with it as quickly and professionally as possible. Ditto when one of my trees fell on my neighbor's garden building and basically demolished it. They were there the next day.

I am 22 and drive an 85 TR (that I purchased with earned money btw, except for the 18.5k I still owe the bank...)

In Florida, my insurance is $841/six months (before the good college student credits) with State Farm. I only have 50,000 property/300,000 bodily insurance though.

I wish my credit record was as clean as my driving record! Between that and my former college roommate who is my State Farm agent, I'm getting a pretty good rate!

Geico $500/year for my 348.
Clean record, 32 years old but I have another car insured as well.

Give them a call. They were thousands better than Progressive and they did NOT tell me that geico had it for less...

I am learning that one should always shop for insurance.

On my airplane, one company quoted $7,000 a year. Another equally as good company (maybe better) quoted $2,750 a year for the same coverage.

Another firm said they might be lower.

So shop around.

I am 30 yrs old, clean driving record, live in Dallas. Got a quote from State Farm for a '86-87 328 GTS in the "pleasure car" category (7,00 miles per year) for about $1200 a year with 100/300/100 coverage and a $500 deductable. That's about what I pay for my '95 Grand Prix.

John, your story reminds me of a guy I knew who was spoiled the same way. 3rd generation of a family that owned a large trading firm, his grandfather more or less gave him everything. Got into a habit of crash-testing Corvettes. These days, I think MOST people should have to take some sort of performance driving course. It's actually not the teens who have gotten worse (they've always been dangerous), I think it's the enormous popularity of over-sized SUVs that should start dictating insurance prices. This is the new enemy.

How in the world do you guys get such cheap insurance in NY? I have the cars listed under my father's name and he is almost 70 years old with a clean record and am paying over $4,000 a year full coverage.

David,

You have to Live in southampton, NY to realize how easy it is to get tickets..... All of them were 35 in a 30. Almost every road out here is a 30 zone and there are radar traps everywhere. It is almost impossible to not get a ticket every once in a while.

I wasn't even going fast in any situation. I have never had a ticket for something more than 5-10 miles over the limit. I know many people with tickets that go as high as 95-110 in a 55 which I think is irresponsible and dangerous.

Just felt like explaining... You made me feel like a bad driver.

I pay $551.88 a year on the 308...
By the way, 24 with 3 citations in 3 years hints at not yet having the restraint it takes to own an F car... You know, like when "not" to put your foot in it.
A so goes yet another bad lecture out the window,

Wow, how about that getting your kid a viper for his 17th B-day.
Talk about teaching our kids values, Not

Chris - Are you insuring this as a daily driver or for pleasure use only? I have insured my 308 through Hagerty (pleasure only-5K miles a year) for an annual premium of $364. I am forty years old, clean record.

Geico won't do the Ferrari for me in NY.

I'm Still looking... Progressive will but its about 4000. / yr..

One of my co-workers uncles bought his son a RT-10 Viper a few years back when he turned 17. The people were old money from the lumber business up here in Norther Minnesota and the kid just wanted to be cool at school basically.....one day coming out of the school parking lot (YES he drove it on a daily basis when nice out) the dumbass decided to race a older camero....he popped the clutch at 6000RPM's slid the rear sideways clipped two other cars before hitting a school bus head on in on comming traffic. He walked away, car totaled, and his father bought him "safer" Corvette two weeks later. This kind of thing makes me sick and shows that some people have more money than brains!! I worked my butt of to get my car and when kids do dump things like that it really irks me off. That is the reason that a 16 year old with a Viper has to pay $9K a year. By the way that value is true I just called geico and said I wanted to insure a 16 year old on my Ferrari the rate went from $455 to $3995 for six months!! I think all kids should be made to take a performance driving course if they get sports cars when under 18, twice now I have had a hot shot next to me in the 348 who has popped the clutch and about nailed me with their rear end trying to race me....when I was just taking off nice and normal!

Never heard of a zero deductible, may be worth using a 250 deductible in exchange for lower prems.

Just out of curiosity, my friends father checked to see how much it would be to insure a 16 yr old on a viper rt/10. this may or may not come as a shock to you, but the figure was $9,000 a year. But then again, only a 16 year old who knows what they are doing belong behind the wheel of something like that. IMO, young kids (me included) dont have the responsibility to be safe with a car like that, or any car for that matter. The driving age should be 18. I now that was a little off topic.

Chris,
I am 23 I bought my 1990 348 last year and am insured with Geico. I pay right now $455/6 months full coverage with $1,000.00 deductable unlimited milage. I have two other cars insured with them but you can get the same deal if you only insure one other car and your Ferrari as your second car. They are great to deal with and I have never had a problem even when I was rear ended by a lady 4 states away at 3am (Not in the Ferrari in my other car).

Looking at purchasing a 348 Spider and looking for insurance.

Talked to Chubb and they won't insure me cause of age (24) and that I have 3 Minor Tickets in the last 3 years.

Any ideas?
