There are two entries in the journal the guy kept (I typed them, my scanner is giving me attitude, exactly as they are in the log, he was really Italian, right off the boat, so bear with his english):

I remove the steering box. readjust the play in the rack and pinion. change the oil and reinstall it. to remove one must also remove the battery in order to access the four bolts and nuts which connect the box supports to the chassis. it a bit of a mess to remove but in 2 hours one can do it. i take the opportunity to check the play in the spherical tie rods joints which must eventually be fixed. one must have to special spanners in order to do the job. I'll try to get them from Metric, Inc.

I just want it a bit stiffer. OK, now for good i had to fix the steering the way I like it. Not that it was too bad but for a ferrari. so first remove the front wheels, battery, remove nut that holds the spline at the pinion. remove the four nuts that hold the steering rack supports. remove the tie rods bolts. slide the steering rack out. remove the rubber bellows. remove the pinion and rack covers and remove the pinion with all its etceteras. use the dremmel to clean the punch that hold the nut and counter nut for the spherical joint. use two pinned spanners (got them from Metric Inc) to unlock the nut and counter nut on both sides. remove nuts etc. clean the ends of the rack. reinsert the nuts and counternuts with some red loctite (to remove them heat to 200C). tighten so that the spherical joint is back to nominal gap. the spherical joints bears on teflon. change the washer that keeps the pinion in place and reinstall everything. then i also tightened the spline under the steering wheel. now the play is nil!. I also tighten a bit the pinion to the rack by removing one shim. The wheel is now the stiffness I like.

I'm trying to find the stuff about it. I think I have it at my dad's office. I'll check soon. There was a discussion about this before, but I can't remember if it was here or back in the days of expensivecar. There were a couple guys that knew more than me about it that filled in a lot of what was done. I'll find the part about what was done tomorrow and post it because I'm going down there to where I have all my Ferrari info.

My steering has some play in it too. Bret I am interested in what was done to your car. Keep us posted.

I vaguely remember something about a previous owner of my car tightening the steering so there is no play. It's really good. I'll look it up (it is somewhere in the records he kept) and try to find out what he did.

Hello

Two small questions. Modial -81

According to the instruction book the steering wheel should be adjustable for reach in addition to highth. Why does nothing happen when I move the lever and pull the wheel? Is it really adjustable?

In addition I would like to take the opportunity
to ask if anybody knows how to mimimize the
"play" in the stering wheel. You can move it more than I like without anything happening.

Thanks for taking your time

Bruno
