My father had the oportunity to buy a GT-40 in the late 70's for about 10k, and he thought it was too expensive and too impractical.

in 1980 my father turned down a perfect '67 330gtc for $12k, because he could buy a '77 930 turbo for the same price......this has bothered him ever since.

Craig, that sounds like a friend of mine who refused to pay $600 for a completely original, running and driving 1960 Corvette because it had a HUGE 6 inch crack in the front fender. This was back in the late 70s.

i see someone brought up Carrol Shelby so i couldnt resist, it was in 74 during the gas crissis, i was just a kid working at RCS (race car specialties) in the valley building 1/4 milers, i was looking for something fast, a friend of mine came in one day and told me there was a guy he knew outside with a 427 cobra who wanted to sell, the car was in perfect condition, black/black, my buddy said he was asking $4700 but was desperate and would take $4200, yes thats 42 hundred, i asked the guy 2 questions, how much gas does it hold, i think he said 11 gallons, remember when filling your car at the gas station they only let you fill you tank, and i asked him how many miles to the gallon it got, he said 5 or 6, i looked the guy right in the eye and i quote myself "this car will never be worth anything" i still laugh when i think about it, not one of my brighter moments, Craig

How come smart people are luckier than dumb ones?

As to the smile,I find most people disdain anyone in a Ferrari and a smile is misinterpreted as a smirk.

Luck: "When preparation meets opportunity.".

I saw this on a sign more than 20 years ago, and still haven't forgotten it.

Grateful? Had I never been born how could I be ungrateful? Birth is not by personal choice. I have not read Shelby's quote but it confirms that some people have the drive to succeed in spite of obstacles and do not blame others for their inadequacies or handicaps and do not look for a handout. You can lead, Follow, or get the Hell out of my way.

Luck, maybe not. But have the common sense to be grateful, we were born with 2 arms, 2 legs, sight and a brain which functions most of the time.

"You could throw me out naked on any street with nothing and I would still become successful. "

That sounds similar to Carroll Shelby's quote from Time magazine:

Drop me naked in Times Square and in five minutes Ill have something going.

It worked for him.

Nothing to do with luck? If you'd been born in Tibet, Afghanisthan, Bangladesh or Iraq ...and worked twice as hard as what you have done, and been twice as intelligent..do you think you'd be driving a Ferrari? :-)
Everyone needs a little luck. :-)

I can see Frank Williams jump out of his chair when Schumacher won his 5th world championship and he jumped again when he did not get the constructor championship again.

I've been in the minivan and I'm grinning too :-)

"Damn, that's a beautiful 360, I'm gonna own one of my own one of these days!"

A magazine reviewer once wrote: "A guy in a Mercedes can get snubed by the public for being a rich a$$, but a guy in a Ferrari that cost twice as much gets hailed as the ambassador of enthusia, as well he should be! People seem to love it that someone just has, and drives, one of these wonderful cars. In the same way that even other race teams secretly root for Ferrari in their hearts. *Everyone* loves the italian legend at least a little bit.

Spread the love boys and girls.

Best!
Ben.

While I certainly smile ("damn, that always feels right"), I find that it's more hard to resist when you pull up next to someone at a stoplight. I almost dread it - unless there are kids in the car. I always like that because they enjoy looking as much as i enjoy driving (or looking for that matter). But when you pull up next that that other non sports car i would normally look over just to see who's there. But you can't help but smile when you pull up next to someone. And I can only iamgine they are thinking "here i am in the minivan and this punk is in a damn ferrari". I smile anyway. It's supposed to be fun!

I'm sure there are plenty of bankers who are glad that they are charging twenty percent credit card interest to financially desperate people, otherwise, how could they make the big bucks to afford the Ferrari. Let them eat cake, eh?

Dave, on my way to the office each morning, I drive by some neighborhoods who's families obviously struggle from month to month. It is then especially when I am also humbled and give thanks for having the rare opportunity to be lucky enough own such an awesome automobile.

I grin like a laughing hyena--can't help it.

And every day I go out to the garage, I pinch myself while I'm grinning. I find it very humbling that I, of al people, am lucky enough to be able to drive these beautiful cars--these beautiful sculptural works of art--whenever I wish.

Robert, I think you're misjudging the public's opinion. I find it refreshing to pull up to a stop light next to a Ferrari, look over and see the owner smiling. Same for when they are getting in/out of their car. The usual look on their faces, however, is the "seriously cool" look. Maybe inside they are fighting back a big grin. Just let it out. To be driving a car that most people dream of driving and then look like you're not enjoying it or that you couldn't care less about it is much worse than a big :-) on your face!

The smile can only be cured by driving a lesser car. Symptoms return once you return to the ferrari. Smile grows as speed increases. The only time you do not have a smile entering or exiting a ferrari is in the service drive. Drop results in a long absence, due to parts, and when the car is picked up due to price of the service.

Ok this is a hard one, I try so hard not to smile when I get out of my Ferrari, but I can not help it. It is a bit embarrassing, I know people who watch you get out of the car think the smile is because it says "look at me this is what I have", when in all actuality the smile says "Dam that was fun"

So does anybody else experience what I am calling the " Ferrari Smile " I try to hold it back I just can not.
