Sam, My e-mail is [email protected]. Michael, It will be late August/early September. I'll let you know, and thanks for the info on the dinoplex, although it's been problem free so far. Peter, Thanks for the info, and I've been talking to Nick Scianna about building me a distributorless direct coil ignition system similar to the ones he builds for the 308/328 cars. I haven't yet decided whether to go with an updated original system as you suggest, or go totally modern. To all of you thank you for your help and input. |

Michael Elliot at Superformance rebuilds those Dinoplex boxes with modern internals. Original look but reliable performance. http://www.superformance.co.uk/ |

Solly, Sounds great, thanks. Just let me know when in Aug. u will be at Motor Classic. BTW, in answer to your orig. query regarding potential problem areas, some of the literature I have refers to premature cam wear, but some sources say that this is limited to early models only. Another problem area mentioned was the Marelli dinoplex unit. Having owned an Alfa and now a Fiat, I would put Marelli a close second to Lucas in the list of worst electrical products manufacturer. So I can believe the latter problem area. Mike |

Sam, I live on Dune Road in Westhampton-maybe we can get together one weekend somewhere 1/2 way (Southhampton/Bridgehampton). Best roads out east are on north fork BUT NOT ON WEEKEND. My favorite drive is midweek, preferably early evening. Ferry across Shelter Island to North Fork (best from EH) or drive to Riverhead and pick up route there. No traffic, lots of wineries to ease the trip, and looks like what the south fork looked like 70 years ago before all the annoying weekend people (like us) came out. Enjoy. |

Mike that was a very nice offer. I live about 15 minutes north of Motorclassic, and I work in White Plains. I keep the Dino out at my summer house on Long Island, but if you'd like to see it I will be bringing it up to Motorclassic in August for some tuning prior to a rally. If you happen to be in the Hamptons area between now and then let me know by e-mail. Be happy to take you for a cruise up 684. Let me know. |

Solly, Like Bruce, I am a Dino nut and have been since the car was first introduced, though I have never owned one. (Someday) Anyway, I live a few miles from Motor Classic and have spent much time drooling on their windows. Worked for a short time for Luigi Chinetti Motors and once spent the better part of a day stripping parts from a wrecked Dino. Don't have first hand knowledge of Dino ownership, but I do have several Dino books and a reproduction of an owners manual. If you have any questions feel free to give me a try. If you live near by (as I suspect you may) I could loan you a book or two if you want also. Good luck with the car. Mike Colavito [email protected] |

My friend's father has a 246 Dino. He keeps the thing in like Concourse condition, he's more than obsessed with it. It's such a sweet car. I'll try to find out some info about his maintanance and how often he drives it (not much), and what he does when he drives it, etc. |

Thanks Bruce. I registered the car with Dennis Schue, but you are right, there are not a lot of them around, and original parts are hard to come by. The car is a blast to drive, but now I'm afraid of something breaking if I use it daily, so it's back to once a week. You are right about the spark plugs, although i found out that the panel behind the seats can be removed, allowing access to the front cylinder bank if you are a midget. |

There is a guy who has created a "Dino Registery" and the last I heard, he has quite a long list of Dinos on it. His name is Dennis Shuey or something similar. I occasionally see mentions of the registery in Cavallino magazine or the Ferrari Market Letter. Dinos seem to be getting more rare. There are probably a lot of them sitting in garages waiting to be restored, but that seems to be an expensive proposition. The front bank of cylinders is apparently difficult to work on and as a result the cars often got only half the spark plugs changed. Also, the lower body panels -- door sills, fenders, etc. are prone to rust, and then there are the expected electrical problems associated with Ferraris of this vintage. When the cars were new, they were the lowest priced offering from Maranello -- $11,000 for a Dino vs. $20,000 for a Daytona. As a result many Dinos were apparently bought by people who wanted the image of a Ferrari, but did not understand the importance of maintaining the car (nor did they have the financial means to do so). The long term effect of this is that many cars suffered early mechanical failures. There are a few good books on the Dino, but you may have to search a bit as most are probably out of print. The Dinos are one of my favorite cars of all time and if 'm lucky enough, I'll own one someday. Good Luck. |

Peter, Bought the car from Motorclassic in White Plains, NY (www.motorclassic.com). Guy who runs it is a well-known vintage Ferrari racer named Nick Soprano (no relation), and he really sorted the car before I bought it. I have ben extremely happy with the attention to detail he has shown. Last weekend I took 3rd in class at the Hamptons Concourse D'Elegance and got a plaque and kiss from Christie Brinkley (hey, it was for charity) . This kind of stuff never used to happen to me. |

Ferrari Club of America http://www.ferrariclubofamerica.org Steven, did you buy this Dino from The Urban Garage in West Vancouver? I bought my 308 from them. They had a GTS with covered headlights and I saw it at last years Italian Car show....sweet car. |

Thank you Craig and Peter. Yes, I read the '98 issue of Forza, but am still looking for additional resources. Which clubs should I join? |

Do you have Forza issue #13 Oct. 1998? It was the 246 Buyer's Guide. |

Recently bought a '74 Dino 246 GTS, and can't find much information anywhere. I have subscribed to Cavallino, read FORZA, and visited every Ferrari website I can find, but this model seems to have limited exposure. Any other Dino owners out there? I am specifically looking for information on things to typically watch out for, service frequency, repairs, good mechanics in the New York area, and anything else that will help me enjoy the car to its full potential. This is my first Ferrari, so I am a novice. look forward to hearing from you. |
