Agree that the Schlegelmich (sp) book has some fabulous photos, but the text is somewhat cryptic. I think the best basic book is, believe it or not, the "Buyer's Guide,"(Batchelor) which goes thru virtually every production model and then some, and outlines the attributes of each car. As a timeline, it affords a simpler chronological record of ferrari production car development. For more indepth history of the early cars, i like Prunet's "Road Cars" better than the Fitzgerald& Merritt; on early history i also like Grayson's "The Man/The Machines" which may be long out of print. The compiled R&T reviews are also a fun read, and of course, there are many model specific books, like the one on the boxer, which are entertaining and informative.FML seems to be a ready source for alot of the out of print books, and the bookstore at the Heritage Motor Classic dealership in B.H. is suprisingly good for stuff that is currently in print.

Actually Ed, MAD magazine was one of the most ethical magazines ever published. From its first issue around 1958 until some years ago when it's founder died, MAD magazine and Consumer Reports both held the distinction of having NO ADVERTISING. The founder of MAD (can't remember his name) refused to sell advertising and most importantly, turned down hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees by refusing to let Alfred E. Neuman's image be used for any purposes. When the founder died, the new guys in control of the magazine quickly started selling out for cash. Rather ironic that one of the most highly respected magazines, Consumer Reports, had MAD Magazine as its ethical brother.

You should also look at Sports Car Market. They always have good Ferrari stuff (including a column by Mike Sheehan), and it's interesting to me to see what cars are selling for at auction.

For any true automotive enthusiast, I think Cars&Parts Magazine will help anyone learn about all facets of automotive history. Of course if you're ONLY interested in Ferrari, your choices are limited. But I don't see how any true auto buff couldn't enjoy reading a large stack of Cars&Parts.

Dave, I know, I know! I've been ordering 1970's back issues of the FML lately. Believe me, I'm crying!

Here's a good laugh: I was looking through an old issue of Cavallino from early 1990. The bust had just happened and they thought the dust had already settled. In the Mercato section, Stan Nowak used to write little comments about each of the models. Under 365 GTC/4 he writes:

"$200,000-$275,000. Still undervalued!" ... "My number one choice for long term appreciation."

Or how about this one:

"1968-73 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta:
$450,000-$650,000. Again the dust settled and these started to move up again. Will always be good for long term investment."

Who knew?

Wayne, I think Ferrari World ended around issue 37 or 38. I have the set but can't remember which issue is the last. If you really want to cry you should read some of the Ferrari Market Letters from the late 1970s. If I only had my time machine working. The classified ads from the old FCA news bulletins are equally as exasperating to read now. How about a 250 GTO for under $10,000.

I pick up all of my japanese magazines and videos at a local market, Mitsuwa. Not sure if they have one near you, but if you'd like, next time I make my way down, I can get more detailed info; distriubution and publisher, and maybe pick you up a copy.

Hugh, tried doing a Google search on "Ferrari Dream." Can't find any info. Do you have any leads?

BTW, I've also purchased a large collection of "Ferrari Italian Style" back issues. All text is in Italian, which I can make out about 50% of without using a dictionary. Don't know if it's still in circulation or not, but it's similar to Ferrari World and Forza with its balance of new and vintage F-car coverage.

Wayne:

There are a couple japanese ferrari mags, one is 'ferrari dream' if I remember correctly, but the detail and pictoral quality are amamzing; only pre req: gotta read japanese. But, based on your standards, I think the pictoral quality and attention to detail of the publication would impress you, language barrier or not. But, I also read:

car-uk mag, great, brutally honest reviews and amazing pictoral layouts and quality.
evo-another uk car rag; see above.
racecar engineering- bit techie, good for indepth need to know info, on a more "academic" level; like nature, but automotive
grassroots motorsports-excellent mag; very hands on, relevant info.
F1 magazine- name says it all, good tech articles
forza
excellence

2. VIPER Magazine
3. Sport Compact Car

But then again...I don't own a Ferrari, yet!

My fav's:

1. Cavallino--the most informative and detailed of the Ferrari mags. Every photo or F-car mentioned is accompanied by a s/n. I have over 100 issues and find they are nice to go back and re-read years later. Great for info on historical F-cars but, due to issues coming out every other month, not very timely in providing new information.

2. Ferrari Market Letter--high-budget cost/low-budget quality, usually only one or two articles per issue. Still, highly informative. I have a nice collection going back to the 80's. I like to pull out the old ones every once in a while for a good read.

3. Forza--best source for information on newer F-cars (not my primary interest). Buyer's Guide issues are great for those contemplating purchasing a used F-car.

In addition: Rosso Ferrari, the official publication of Ferrari N.A.--large format, great photos, not very detailed. Also expensive.

I also bought in bulk a large collection of back issues of Ferrari World, a British publication. They're pretty good, similar to Forza, but I don't know if they are still around. The most recent issue I have is from 1997.

I thought I was the only one that tossed every non-ferrari issue of a magazine. If it even has a blurb about Ferrari, I keep it. Otherwise, it goes out with trash.

AutoWeek covers anything that happens in the car world faster than the others. Way faster. I also get Cavalino & FCA Prancing Horse. The later two are redundant and mostly concentrate on your grandfather's Ferrari (not that they wern't great). When they have new car stuff it is already two month old news. The Ferrari publication I really spend the most time with is The Ferrari Market Letter. I read every word 5 times waiting for the next one. I only read AutoWeek once & toss non-Ferrari issues.

The must haves I think are Forza, Cavallino, and R&T.

I think FCA's Prancing Horse is good too, but not worth $120 if that's the only thing you use FCA for.

Also, if you like the history of Ferrari, there are years of reading in all the old issues of Cavallino and Forza. I have about 110 of the Cavallino's and it takes me a good 2-3 hours to read each cover to cover. Of course I try to memorize as much as I can.
