No question, buy a Porsche 911. You can get a modified, ready to run hotrod 911SC for under $20K that will be the most fun you have ever had and will smoke 99% of the other performance cars out there. They offer a build quality unmatched by any other car on the planet, are mechanically bullitproof and easy to maintain and they are incredibly fun to drive. Look for an '81 to '83. Get one that someone else has done all the hotrod things too and save a bundle.

Buy a brand new Mini S. You get new car, warranty, great handling, sportiness, and the girls seem to like the car. The more you save now, the quicker you get your f'car!!

Late 80's Esprits aren't that expensive. They're very fast and chicks dig 'em.

Brian, the only words of advice I can give is,
set a budget first, and only look at cars within that price range... and forget about what the ladies think about your car.
If it were me, I would buy something like a used corolla or civic to get me through school,
Then after I graduated and started making a decent living, I would buy my F-car... :-)

Brian,
Porsche all the way for a first sporty car.
911's have been around since the 60's.
Parts are everywhere and upgradable.
example: there are '77 to '83 coupes between
$9K to $15K in great running conditions that are more fun to drive than a bimmer M3 (this is my personal opinion - bimmer enthusiasts, don't take offense)
I had a '91 911 Cab earlier this year that I sold for $25K - I had a blast with this car.
Anyhow's any high performance auto do your PPI.
You know what... forget the M3 or Porsche
- go F 308 GT4.
Rough good condition cars are at the $15K.
Last November I found a 308 GTS at Sarasota FL that just needed a paint job for $17K (yes, I test drove the car - mechanically sound).
Do the maintenance yourself - there is great pride in working on the car yourself.
Fchat members will help you through this.
Have I corrupted you yet?

I have been thinking about a used M3 sedan, but I thought they were too expensive. I dont like the coupes at all! How much do you think I would be paying for a 95 M3 with a 5-speed transmission in it? That is what i would really like to get.

One of my wife's daily drivers is a 400E. Nice car. Not sexy but plenty fast. We've had it for 9 years and have 104K on it.

M3's are excellent cars and more sporty than a 4 door Benz. I do not think an older M3 is faster than a 400E above 30 mph. The M3 handles better and has more panache. The 400E is a 4 speed auto that will cross 50 mph before hitting second gear. That is why it is a little sluggish to 30.

Both cars you mentioned are expensive to repair. I know when I was a student, costs were a factor.

I think the Audi comes with scheduled maintenence and a longer warranty-not sure though. The BMW may have better resale.

Most important when buying a used car-no paintwork. If there's been no paintwork, there's less chance of unfixable problems. If possible, after no paintwork, try to find something that still has some factory warranty left. That way, if there's any quirks, you can get them repaired. In addtion, if you want to buy an extended warranty, they are usually better and/or cheaper if the car is still under factory warranty.

Tough choices. A Toyota Camry or Honda Accord would be the best bet for a good quality car, IMHO. However, given the women requirement you posted, they won't be the best bet.

Some will say that if all they are interested in is your car, they are not worth meeting. I disagree, they are worth meeting, using then discarding. A nice car helps in that process. (just kidding - sort of)

Have fun, good luck.

Women like flowers and perfume. You don't want to buy her a car on the first date...

Just kidding. How much $$ were you looking to spend?

Get a 1995 or later BMW M3. You can get one for the low $20k's and they are fast, comfortable, handle great, are reliable and look great.

Hey, You guys seem to know what your talking about when it comes to all sorts of cars. In a few months, I will be buying my first car. Its gonna have to be used, and I cant seem to make up my mind on what to get. I want some opinions to help me make up my mind. I have thought of two already: 97-98 BMW 328i, 98-99 Audi A4 1.8 or maybe 2.8. Keep in mind that I am a student. I want something sporty, yet also something that women will like. Ill be ready for my first f-car in a few years....:-) I trust your opinions more than my friends, so please let me know
