When I first began my fcar search (about 9 months ago) I was looking for a 308. I always loved the looks of it. But when I actually saw and drove both (308 & 328)in person, the 328 was calling to me. I guess I liked the 328 for the following reasons:

1. Body color and integrated bumpers.
2. Body color front hood.
3. More horsepower
4. Reliability
5. Drove better (IMHO)
5. Only about $5k more than a 308 QV.

A good 328 is only $4 to 7k more than a 308 QV. I was actually looking at 308's, the first was a white '83 QV and Norwoods found a few little probs, it had lost a belt before, cosmetic probs, and it's claimed 17k miles with bare orginal tires. They wanted $33k for it. The next one I looked at was the one I bought and overall the car was twice as good, but only a little more money. I think in the end it's what you can afford. If I could of afforded a 355, I would of got one. Now that I've had the 328 two years, I'll never get rid of it, only add new ones. BTW, my next one may be a 308 GTB.

A guy in town bought an 89 328 GTS for $90k canadian. It was low k's like 12,000kms but $90k is crazy. Thats why I would go to a TR for that kind of money. Not to mention $60k cdn for a carb 308GTB. Theres another GTSi going for $60k as well.

I was going for the 308 from the very beginning. I just like the inside/outside appearence better then the 328. I don't like the 20+ less hp but life isn't always a 0-60 race.

My purchase dilemma was similar to many others - buy a 328 or buy a stellar QV. I bought my QV ('85 GTS) for the following reasons: 1) I like the styling better than the 328 - both exterior and interior; 2)It was a highly documented one owner car with 23K miles and 30K service just complete; 3) It is a stunning and seemingly unusual combination of Grigio with tan hides and interior; 4) I managed to buy it for a price that was aligned with much less desirable QV's - essentially the equivalent of finding the diamond in the rough. They are out there, but so are a lot of turkeys.
All that said, there's no right or wrong in choosing a Ferrari model - any of them will provide 'that grin' while driving.....

After taking a look at David Handa's 328 this past weekend, the 328 is definitely my next Ferrari....

I saw a guy pick up a QV on Saturday in Atlanta. He payed $44K for it and came all the way from California!! The car was visually maintained but had some small rocker damage and scrapes inside the door opening. The firewall fabric was torn too. I thought it was a $32K car, and thought he may have paid as high as $37K, but $44K! Are there that few nice examples for sale?

I bought a 328 because I found one that was for sale at the same price as the 308QV's I was looking at. I like the looks of the 328 better, I like the interior upgrade, and I like the additional power.

Ken,
I have owned a QV GTS and GTB and a 328 GTS and GTB. After a lot of miles in all 4 cars, I decided the 328 GTB was for me. Here is why:
I prefer the integrated bumpers on the 328 although the 308 is overall a little sleaker looking. I actually do prefer the QV interior and seats, but I have found the 328 interior holds up better and functions better.
The main reasons are mechanical. The power difference is not great, but is seat of the pants greater. Handling and brakes are also improved, especailly after the mid 88 suspension revision. Someone else mentioned the cooling system is much better as well. As my mechanic says, 308's can be "needy" cars. I know yours and mine have been needy. 328's have far fewer issues.
From a new buyers standpoint, it is pretty easy to find a nice 328. There are far fewer nice, no story QV's.

Like many first time Ferrari shoppers, I looked at 308QV's and 328's. After doing some fairly extensive research, I bought the 328 for several reasons:

1) Reliability. As the final version of the 308 series, Ferrari had 11 years to work out the bugs with the 328.
2) The 328 is faster.
3) The 328 is newer (I own an '89).
4) Look/Design. I liked the integrated and painted bumpers of the 328. I also liked the interior better... while retaining the classic look of the 308, the 328 just looks more modern.

Ken, I was close to choosing a 328 (hence my email address name), but in the end, the sharper lines, chrome flip levers on the center console, and like you stated..."the rawness" (excellent choice of words) won me over. The blunt nose of the 328 started to not look as good as the 308.

As everyone has stated and I also believe, each of us buys a specific model because of what it does to our soul.

I love my 308 and question whether I could get myself to spend an additional $10-12K for an improved 308. When I upgrade (and keep my 308QV), I'll get a 355.

I chose my 328GTS over several perfect QVs for 10 reasons. First, it is significantly faster. Don't pretend it isn't (unless you have been visiting Nick @ Forza). Second, I love the front grill with the little horsie that resembles a Boxer. Not that I don't just love the 308 "shark nose" bumper with the GTB air dam. Especially the euro version. Third, the lower back end looks are greatly improved on a 328. I don't like that large black pan under the 308 bumper. Fourth, I figured after 10 years of 308s that Ferrari knew what needed fixing and did it on the 328. Fifth, the front "hood grill" is body color. Sixth, the wheels on the pre-'89 328s are much more attractive, not having the hub stick out like a 308s. Seventh, it's newer. Eighth, It cools more efficiently. Ninth, less prone to fires from fuel hose rubbing gas tank. And the tenth reason, it was the first car I looked at to buy (after much research and contemplation over a QV). It was black metallic, a Platinum winner with 10K miles and when I saw it, I knew it was the one. If I didn't have the money for this one, I would have been very happy with a black euro 308GTB QV if I could have found one. I would have had to change the wheels though. I love the ones Nick @ Forza has on his black GTS/Bi. 'Wonder what they are??? I must find out.

I never considered a 328. Don't like the front bumper look. Like Ken, I too prefer the style of the interior of the 308s. I like the metal switches, too much plastic on the 328s. I have a Euro 308 and really like the power and styling differences.

After I drove a 328 and was not impressed enough with the differences, I decided to invest further into my 308. My 308 actually felt faster and shifted better than the 328 I drove.

I recently replaced my 308 carb (accident) car and looked at 308 qv's, but ended up with a 328. While I prefer the look of the 308 series over the 328, the big plus for the 328 is the updated interior, and the fact that there are is a greater inventory of nice condition 328's over 308 qv's (and prices for 328's are cheap right now). One other plus for the 328, is that being newer, most of the parts are still readily available. Parts availability was starting to be a pain for the 308 carb cars, and qv's can be a problem too on occaision. Ever tried to find an original Lucas antenna switch? Fortunately, there are more and more quality reproduction parts coming out...Not that damn switch though (Dennis McCann found one for me $160, but I happily paid, thanks D!)

Ken, cars are a very personaly thing. If YOU like it, then you made the right decision.

I purchased my 308 GTS QV over a 328 because it was available in excellent condition at a fair price.

I bought a 328 because I wanted the "newer" look with the painted bumpers, stock 16" wheels and more modern interior.

I can understand why others like the 308 look better -- sharper nose, which flows better and makes the car look longer and smoother.

I got a 308 for money reasons but would not buy a 328 as a replacement for it. I will go for a TR for the same money as a nice 328 when I upgrade.

I purchased my 308QV because it was handy and a little less expensive. Not nearly as much choice here in Canada. Since then I have been very happy with the choice. I prefer the looks of the car and the more uncomplicated engine.

If I was doing it again I would stick with the 308QV.

Many people have commented to me that I should have purchased a 328 instead of my 308 QV. Reason being is that I paid a lot of money for my 308 QV because of its condition and extensive service history. While I could have purchase a nice 328 for the same or less than I paid for my 308 QV, I really wanted a 308 QV. The 308 QV was the car to get when I was in high school and I still would have wanted one even if I got a 328. In addition, I prefer the styling of the 308 QV over the 328 (I like the interior better - especially the flip switches) and the 308 QV has more of a pure "rawness" to it.

So the question is, why did you decide to get your 308 over a 328, or your 328 over the 308?
