The 2.7 Motronic was not that late in intro point, my '91 has it.

FWIW, Somehow I don't think moving the battery location had a great deal to do with improved performance.

Actually one big gain in the 348's was in the later ECU's The last ECU's the 94 spider and the ECU number that replaced it put out the most HP and Torque of all the 348's and the rev limit was moved up 200rpm. I did this and notice the difference and have tested teh rev limter on the track. The ECU's are just a plug in part. Easy change. It is much better to get the latest ecu that rechip the car. But at a few thousand dollars you get what you pay for. But for $2400 bucks I think they are well worth it. From what I understand about chip tuning you just can't do it for 400 bucks. On a mass produced BMW you get people interested in making a real chip with all compromises sorted out. When you sell only a few 348 chips ayear you get some guy making empirical desicions without the dyno, without multiple engines, without varying environmental conditions, without a test trrack....

Slightly off topic:

I've heard that 348s were problematic. Were the later ones better sorted out, more reliable?

The power increase for the 348 came from a freer flowing exhaust(change from two can to one can muffler) and change from Motronic 2.5 to 2.7. The rear track was also widened through spacers and the final drive was changed to improve acceleration. The battery was moved from the rear to the front to improve handling. There were many cosmetic changes to the interior as well such as higher quality leather and more of it.

I believe they used the 2.7 Motronic till the end of the 348 run. Maybe even into the 355?

What about better electronic engine management that allows the engine to make more power at all points on the RPM range?

Just had an idea here. The newer 355 has a free-flow CAT and that has better HP output than the early CATS. Now could it be possibly that the HP increase comes from the switch from early model CATS to newer free-flow CATS?

Does anybody have any insight on this?
