The suggested belt change on a new Phord focus for example is 200k. The car wont last that long. |

No, I am sorry but they are not. The HSN belts may someday but without changing the pulleys, the HTD belts will not work. |

From my experience age makes little difference as these things simply do not deteriorate as quickly as some would want you to believe. The primary structure of a belt is Fiberglass. If it was my car I would not replace them until the factory suggested mileage was attained. Heat and oil on the belts is the biggest cause of failure. You can look on the back side of the belts and if there are no cracks in it then age is not affecting it. The newer HTD HSN belts will last indefinately which is what most modern cars now have. |

I had mine replaced in April 1998. That was 20,000 miles and almost 5 years. Should I change them then again this next April??? |

It does get boring at times especially since 75% of them are Honda belts, but that's what I do. Probably most everyones job is repetition as well. |

Last January I started throwing all the old timing belts in a pile that I replaced this year. Here is the pile so far. The picture didn't come out as clear as I hoped but it is hard to get a picture of a big black pile. |

If I recall correctly, it got most of the exhaust valves. I do not remember how many intakes. I believe I replaced them all since the customer gave me a blank check. This has been a year or so ago and I usually cannot remember past yesterday anymore. Check out my next post! |

I had one Porsche 944 to break a belt with 80,000 miles on it. Fairly simple to replace the valves in it as a result. |

my 944 had 100k before I did the belt.balance belts also.I wouldnt do a Porshe before 100k.They just run. |

My Audi 5000 had 225,000 miles on the belt. 50-60k on a belt.No problem.tensioners,bearings,water pumps,valves adjust,cam seals? Broke a belt on my 80 308 at 45k.car was 12 years old with original belt.no piston damage.3 valves needed.Price wasnt much more than a good 30k anyway. |

I replaced the belts on a 1990 Accord last week that had over 200,000 miles on the belts. FYI all 4 cyl. Accords have a cam belt and a balance shaft belt. The belts still looked good and were 12 years old too. |

Ron - I agree with you, if Honda belts last 100K spinning at 8,000 rpm, why would Ferrari use less quality parts. However, it is a very expensive myth to disprove. The other side is, they are probably the least expensive parts in the whole car and can be done by a competent owner. |

If the manual calls for 52k before belt changes, wouldn't that mean Ferrari has already factored that some people will go over that amount before changing the belts.. I really believe that 30k belt change is a myth and a way for dealers to make more money quick

I would still do valves at 15K and valves and belts at 30K. Lots cheaper than engine parts. DAve |

I think so. The manual for my 308 doesn't call for the belts to be changed untill 52k. Now I personally would not go that long but I don't think you need to at 15k |

If someone did what most would consider not sane and drove a Ferrari 15,000 miles a year, could the miles between minors/majors be extended? Of course, still have fluid changes at 3,000 miles. |
