Yea, for my daily driver it is and will be an M5. I had an e34 M5 and now have an e39 M5 with a deposit on the new V10 SMG M5 which should be out in 2004. My wife wants a little bigger back seat so I'll most likely go with the MB S Class. |

oliver, does the clk430 have seatbelts for the rear middle seat? or is it an optional thing you can get put in by the dealer? have been looking at that car for the future but never sea any visible belts. |

We have been MB owners almost forever. Had C280's, CLK 430, 300SD, 500SEL, 500SL, 300D, 300E 5 Speed, SLK230, C230 and currently C320, C230 and S500. For my money the CLK 430 was rocket with great lines and holds 5 snugly. The S500 also holds its own and very comfortable and will handle the road very well when asked to. The C320 also comfortable and performs super and holds 5. The new model is tricked up a little more than ours. I have not checked out the new S or the E class, but it looks great. Don't forget MB pays for all your maintenace up to 50,000 miles and we get free loan cars in CA when they are in for service. My vote is MB, it just depends on how much money you want to spend. I've had BMW's, but they just weren't there for me and I did have a little trouble. Have two friends who have the M5's and they run like a stripped ass ape. Good luck. |

Frank, since you have an M5 in the stable I would suggest the Jag XJR or a slightly used Bentley Arnage. Nothing quite like the British saloons. If you require a german coachbuilder get the S500 with the sport package. |

Bruce I would classify the M5 as the best sports saloon - even a Ferrari killer. The Lexus is a very competent and comfortable, if a little bland car. I personally do not look for the highest performance in a family luxury saloon. It should be quick but the key word is LUXURY. I dont think the new 7 series shape does it any favours. So if Frank already owns an M5, he might not want another one. But then again.... |

najib my 2 cents...there is nothing wrong with the japanese lexus and infiniti...but, as far as my own opinion goes, the best luxury, street car out there is the bmw m5....nothing compares to that, with MB running 2nd.. REGARDS, BRUCE |

Japanese and American are out. Which leaves European manufacturers. Who in your opinion make the most desirable cars out of these possible "luxury" saloon car makers: MB BMW Audi VW Renault Citroen Peugeot Saab Volvo Jaguar MG Alfa Romeo The choice is fairly limited if you come to think of it. The Jags look more like a hearse or London Cab than a luxury saloon. The Alfas are attractive but mostly front wheel drive and unreliable. Which only leaves the BMW and MB as true luxury saloons. Moreover, your wife probably wont be looking to outgun every boy racer at the lights. If price was my worry, I'd go for a slightly used MB and save a small fortune on initial depreciation. |

I LOVE the G35, and will probably pick up a six-speed coupe soon... If it drives anything like the 350Z which I drove a few weeks ago, then it will be one hell of a car. Ernesto |

understand this is Japanese, but the G35 (which I have recently test drove), is verrrrryyyyyy comfortable, and 260 hp makes it pretty peppy. Also under 30k base price, bargain car. Has anyone else had any experience with the G35? |

The Saab 9'5 Aero could possibly be the coolest 5 seater under 50k- its an amazing looking (subjective obviously), reliable car that you don't see everyday. |

The new Saab 9-5 is very nice. Seating 5 might be tough though. I have a 1999 9-3 and very happy with it. I've driven the 9-5's and their sweet. Nice pick up. |

According to the specs published by MB and BMW, the interior of the MB E class is considerably smaller than the BMW 5 series. And, I don't find Cadillac much competition to a BMW or MB nor do I find BMW and MB trendy cars. In fact, they are the staple of modern performance sedans. |

I would strongly consider the VW Passat with the W8 engine. It comes with all of the toys standard & lists for about $42K. The W12 is not available yet. If you have more money, go for the Audi A8 or S8. I really like the M5. But I love the MB E55 AMG. I don't care about shifting gears in a sedan. |

Wait for the new facelifted S350 with a 3.7 liter engine. It is very nicely made and is quite brisk (7.6 secs). I don't think the E class is smaller than a BMW 5 series for interior space though. They are deceptively sleek. |

does it have to be a sedan? if you need the 5 seats and you already have an m5, my choice would be an e55 station wagon. great hauling capacity and fantastic performance. very subtle as well so you/she won't attract a lot of negative attention, especially from the boys with radar guns. |

Cadillac is indeed the American auto manufacturer offering the most improved products, from the CTS to the new RX-like SUV to the new convertible. However, they are still ages behind Lexus, BMW, Audi and Mercedes in almost every category. The STS is a complete, front-wheel-drive joke. Ernesto |

If you overlook what Cadillac has to offer you are depriving yourself of some worthy competition to the fad and trendy cars. Take a look, you'll be surprised. |

We have the Jaguar VDP s/c, highly recommend. Highs - lots and lots of power, comfort and the ride is perfect for cruising. Backseat space is out of this world. Goes great in the snow with snow tires, not so great with all season. Lows - space utilization will drive you crazy! The trunk looks large until you put much of anything in it. (We had trouble packing for a 5 day ski trip *without ski equipment* with two kids.) Make sure that you can live with this.) Two large suitcases will not fit... The next generation is just around the corner, early pictures suggest the same lines with lower weight and better space. We will be trading in to get this when it comes out as the car is a delight. - JMG PS, will hold 5 easily in VDP but middle rear is not as comfortable as others. |

Geez Frank, you've shot down the Lexus and Infinity. You don't like the styling of the new BMW 7-series. The Audi and Jag's rear seats aren't big enough to seat five. And you feel SUVs are too big and impractical. Sounds like you're down to a Lincoln Towncar with a vinyl top and the gold package. Hey, if you get one of these, will you add a couple Scudi shields on the front fenders and post a pic for us? :-) |

The outgoing XJR has really small rear seats ..You could fit two adults max . Great car otherwise . Dont know if the new one will have more legroom..It looks bigger though. |

Frank, I just bought an MB E55 which is a little smaller than the S class, but seats 5 comfortably with great performance. The S class is bigger, but I think you might end up paying more for the S class with less performance than the E55. Also, I believe that 2002 is the last year for E55s so wheeling and dealing with MB might be easier. |

Since you excluded Japan (Lexus LS 430), I think the best all around car would be the MB S-Class. Not my personal taste, however, another option would be a Cadillac. |

I would say an Audi all the way .. either an S8, A8, S6 avant or A6 avant. The S6 Avant is a station wagon with 340hp and 310lb of torque. |

No SUVS ! They are the biggest fraud ever pulled on the American consumer and I will not be pulled into it. There big, ugly, perform poorly, guzzle gas and are of no use to 99.99% of the population. Oh yea, did I say thet were ugly ? If not, they are, ugly that is ! |

The S430 is a good choice, and not bad on lease $1000 / month no money down. The A8 is great, but not real exciting looking. The Jag is very nice looking, but I cannot stand driving or sitting in it ( my mother has driven them for years ). I just find it cramped even on the VP version. Go for the new Range Rover. But the MB is prob the way to go. |

It would get her an M5 to match mine before i would consider the E class. She needs more room in the rear seat than either of those offer. |

The S-class is nice esp. the upcoming S600, twin-turbo V12. How about the new E-class. The performance specs of the E500 is not bad either. The only caveat is it's new (you are the prototype driver).

I'm looking to buy a new 4 door sedan for my wife. It must seat five comfortably and can not be made in Japan. I don't like the looks of the new BMW 745 so that's out. I'm thinking MB S Class or Jaquar XJ8 Vanden Plas or Vanden Plas supercharged. Does anyone have any experience with either of these vehivles ? Or, does anyone have any suggestions of others to consider ? |
