Sorry I offended anyone by posting in the wrong section, Sheesh! I never even noticed an off topic section until now. Only one way to settle this...call the commission of the 5 families for a sit down!

People are not going to use the "Off Topic" Section, simply because it will not attract as many eyeballs and responses.

Two of my grandparents were born in Sicily. My other two grandparents were born in Naples. I don't think the show does disservice to anyone. It is entertaining. I enjoy it.

People are far too thin skinned these days. Ethnic jokes are among the funniest. Ethnicity carries predispositions.

Come ON, y'all! It's the movies! The Sopranos is supposed to be a fantasy--entertainment!!!--not a documentary.

Cracks me up when all the self-righteous talking heads get all huffy about some group's "depcition" on film, when they need to realize that it is supposed to be fantasy/fiction/entertainmemt, and NOT a documentary.

After all, are all Arabs terrorists? All rappers misogynistic thugs? All southerners ignorant rednecks? All Germans Nazis? All lawyers noble & virtuous? All corporate executives villains? etc etc etc. C'mon, folks: have some perspective here.

i am an italophile from way back (married one, cook like one, lived there, drive their cars etc).
i also appreciate some of the mobster movies. i also watch the sopranos because i think its well done.
but one of the reasons i like the tv show is because they have removed the romantic or glamourous aspects of the mob, to leave only the reality that the characters are, for the most part, low-lifes leaching off the rest of the community. i like that they show how the same people shooting each other then go grocery shopping or go to their kids ball game; thats realistic. that they don't glorify their seeminess is good for debunking the mafia's mystique.
however, because of this the show is not good for the italian american image in the usa. it does nothing to play up the myriad of positive aspects of the country or the courageous and ambitious immigrants who made it in america.
imho

Interesting as one of the actors for Sopranos stopped by my shop in a black 355 with yellow fender badges to ask for directions to Granite Bay, they happen to be filming in our area.

Jay, that's just slightly better. ; ) Film and TV have been largely far below par, both thematically and in plot. At bottom, however, I could care less. I have never taken cues from pop culture on how to live or seen it as a reflection of my life. It puzzles me that so many Americans do.

Okay, how about "Boys in the Hood"? Well done, but not your average Afro-American family.

Jay, maybe the Italians I've known were mafioso and had very good covers. LOL
I failed to mention, however, that the Sopranos is extremely well done. The Jefferson's, Good Times, et al were pathetic.

Johnathan that is an excellent point. My wife is black (from the West Indies) and she feels the same way. I don't judge her family according to George Jefferson and they don't judge me like Tony Soprano.

I have to disagree with the thought that mobsters don't act like that in real life. Ever heard Henry Hill give an interview? or ever read any of the former FBI agents books? They portray them to a T (that is if we are to believe the FBI).

I am Italian also, my father is from Sicily. I love watching the Sopranos. I don't think it hurts the Italian image, most people know its Hollywood, but they do show little things that all Italian families do, not the Mafia part.
Ed, I am also an auto mechanic and I hate when people call us grease monkeys, I rather somebody say I was Connected instead.

If you went by what the media portrays, all Auto Mechanics are a bunch of Redneck, greasy haired, smelly, toothless, knuckle dragging, ripoff artists. I take offense to the portrayal as I am not smelly.

I am very much Italian too. My parents and many of my Italian friends love the Sopranos and most mafia-themed movies. They do not think it is a diservice either. I do not really watch TV (except for the Yankees) so I can't say that I have seen much of the show. The mafia thing never really bothered me, but now I am kind of fed up of watching a movie made about Italian mobsters who say the F-word every 5 seconds. I think in a way it does do somewhat of a diservice in the way people view Italians (especially in my area (CT/NYC). Many times when people find out I am Italian from this area, they crack mafia jokes - all in good fun, of course (and I think it is funny on the surface too). So, what I am trying to say is that many times these movies give some people the wrong impression - which is not good. I do not particularly care for these movies, but others do..to each his own.....

Thanks,
Anthony "Shoulders" A.

As an African-American with Sicilian ancestry I don't think the show is any more a reflection of Italian-Americans than The Jefferson's was of African-American. I've never known any Italians who behave that way except on film, just as I've never met an AA who is as absurd as George Jefferson. Hollywood likes its illusions.

I think the Sopranos is a bad depiction of most italian-americans but also a bad depiction of what real mafiosi are. I grew up around a good amount of them here in Westchester and they dont look/act like the Sopranos characters. Me and my friends (all italians) watch the show for laughs. All of us and our parents work hard, dont steal, and pay income taxes!

I'm Italian and I love the Sopranos. I don't think that mafia movies hurt the image of Italians or that it does a diservice to Italians. I was curious about how others on the board feel about it. Actually, all mafia movies in general.
