Dave328GTB, I decided to see if you are correct on ALL ferrari speedos being off. I got out my GPS, strapped it to the car and set course on a highway I know was heading north. I must be lucky my speedo right up to 100 was dead on. 80 was 80, 90 was 90, 60 was 60 and so on, 100 was 100. stopped there. Hard for me to figure that it gets way less accurate after that considering I have had it above 140 and damn sure know it wasn't 120-125, just the acceleration alone tells your body that. I agree that many can be off, but there are a few that seem to be up to snuff. I musta lucked out. Whew !! And yes the GPS is accurate. Had it for 5 years and it even tracks the jet at 485 knots and it matches perfectly with the onboard air data computer. Dave Handa, That is entirely possible on a dyno with no friction or wind resistance. Put in some coefficients of friction for all four tires and wind and you have 155-158 top speed which is about right for the 328. Dynos are for horepower not speed readings. Michael |

USA QV's had shorter gearing to improve 0-60 times, so I would suspect they have lower top speed capabilities than the Euro QV's. USA QV's had somewhere around 230hp to 240hp depending on the year and the source of the information... I know the Ferrari speedos are off a bit at the top end as I once saw a 328 pull 8,300 rpm on a dyno and it was reading 170 mph! |

Ken, 245kph=154.35mph in a '74 GT4 but take out the 10% speedo error and more like 140mph (not at redline which I believe it will reach!) QV would be up for a better speed due to more power and slipperier shape (although the GT4 is quite efficient slicing thru the air) Also mine is Euro spec so "had" 255hp when new, unsure of hp for US QVs |

Ken, All Ferrari speedos are notoriously generous. 140 indicated is 120-125 actual. Dave |

www.paloaltospeedometer.com will redo the speedo for you. Not sure what they charge, but I have seen their work, and it looks original when they are done... |

I'm stuck with the nearly useless 85 mph speedo. Does anyone have the 160 mph speedo or know how and where I can get one? My speedo, at least at slower speeds, seems to be very accurate according to the State Trooper's radar gun. An indicated 82 turned out to be 82 on his radar. Bad luck for me. That was not a voluntary reading. However, the Sheriff duputy who wanted to see how fast the 308 would run had me at 145 when I ran out of good road. I was surprised because I thought the original specs said the 308 (79 carb GTS) could only run 140. I would think that 23 years and 85,000 miles later it would not run faster than when new. At this rate she'll be running 180 in another 20 years. |

Most vehicles have a lower drag coefficient with the windows up and roof closed. |

I have tested mine with a GPS also. The indicated 100mph was actually 94mph. I have had mine up to an indicated 135 with a few thousand rpm to go before red. I was probably at 125. Still, that was fast for me on I-20. Nothing else I own will run at 125 so easily. |

Early Italian speedometers are known to be very optimistic , use a hand held GPS unit to verify true top end. Last month we took my scooter to a local dry lake to have fun in the speed runs , and the video showed one speed and timing and scoring reflected true speed and my Garmin Vista GPS was 1 mile off the scoring speed. Got to love the Hayabusa with it's Hahn Race Craft Turbo . 228hp and true top speed of 202.4 . Big plus it's street legal, in fact I put about 300 miles a month on it just running errands. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. WFO |

Ken, I've seen 145 top on windows up, and it was not to the floor, it had a little more! I think 150 is not a problem, perhaps more along the lines of 155. |

I did catch him, but it was not an easy thing to do. We then cruised together for awhile at a slightly higher speed than the posted limit. |

This weekend while I had my 308 QV GTS out for a drive I was chasing a TR. In the process of catching the TR, I was able to hit an indicated 140 (the car still had more left but I ran out of road). I had my top off with the windows down while at speed. My question is whether or not I would have been able to go faster if I had my top on and the windows up. Several people had been able to hit an indicated 150 in their 308, and I would like to see if my car can do the same. |
