Just wondering, any knowlegdable Ferrari People out there in the east PA-baltiomre section of the good ol' USA? I am in baltimore now, and over dinner with a knowledgable tifosi I could really hammer out which would really be the best f-car for me and my current life position/situation. thnks

dont worry, I wont buy it personally early 400 series look too much like old hondas in the front but the tail is at least pretty....

I would sell the nex but its maintainance is what is great...I learned to drive manual on it and it was my daily driver throughout summer break....I cant afford upkeep on a real Ferrari like a TR. As for the others, I love my 7 and want to keep it forever so I dont driver her, at least not as much any more. right now I am forced most of the time to a because the gps helps in the city ALLOT. My prelude drives like crap, handles like crap, interior is crap but it looks pretty :-)...when I get gps itll take over as daily...what I need is a daily driver, I was thinking of dumping the prelude, and using my 6 as daily when it is fixed, and with the money from tis sale and my savings getting a Ferrari something, s2k or a bmw 850.

I say something as I sont know whixh, not that I dont know Ferraris; trust me, if it was made post 1980 I know about it in some form, and if was famous..eg not like the 400/412 or the mondials, I know its performance and many or its quirks as well..I prob memorized many Forza mags from reading them so much...hehe

Omar,

Listen to Magoo.

Matt

P.s. you are worring me because I fell that you are going to just buy a car because it says Ferrari on it. That would be a hugh mistake.

Sell the NSX and get a 348 or a TR.

[you are starting to worry me...]

what I do? I was just wondering about the car. And yes I own all the cars I list. I also owned a 98 Range rover but I sold it to get Nina the NSX.

sorry about the 512 mixup, I really love 512 TRs, and as soon as I hear 512, I think of a TR..just like if someone says GTO or 328, I think of a Ferrari firt, muscle or bmw second.

Oh and I know ferraris arent 1/4 mile cars; trust me I know the entire debate, getting used to justifin the NSX to the stupid "twin turbo supra" crowd who loves their, imo, crap.

I was just wondering.

I bet ur gonna give me heat about my age next..I have gone through the same "oreintation ritual" in each of the car boards i visit. >:[
the prelude board did it. the E38 BMW board did it. only the NSXers havent yet...but soon I suspect they will to.

Omar,

Inside looks rough. I would question the milage unless it is documented. Also, almost any honda of the sporting type...even your prelude, will smoke the doors off of a stock 80 something Mondial. Ferrari's are not 1/2 mile cars...

you are starting to worry me...

Matt, I know what you mean, I have beenn looking for the "perfect" ferrari ever since I could drive...its been a couple years now :-) And have yet to come across one that really catches me AND I can afford ;) hehe. BTW congrads on the 512TR..I think it is the perfect looking TR (if ony it had 512M rims and tail lights, and of course engine, it would be THE perfect car.)

Can you tell me more about http://cars.desertworld.com/83mondcp.htm
?

It looks ok, has anyone seen it in person...I cannot get out there to see it anytime soon...

What is the performance, really? I know its no modern sports car...but what really does it do? you know 0-60, 1/4 miles, skidpad, handling on a turn like does it understeer/oversteer, finally of course what is the hp abd torque fig. ?

the worst feeling is driving a ferrari and getting blown by a Honda "Rice" getting 14.7-8 on the 1/4. Esp, when you have a 4600lb sedan that can beat the rice out of the "Rice"

Omar,

If you take the time to look around and get the car that is right for you, you will be happy. Buying a car that needs a ton of work will only ruin your first ferrari experience. Look at the local ferrari dealers in your area. Talk to the sales guys, they will help you. Look at the independent sales places. I am sure there are some in the NE. If that fails, start looking out of state.

Happy hunting

M

p.s. It took me 5 months to find my 308 and the 512 took even longer

Omar, if you get a lemon in a ferrari, you cannot make lemonade with it.

no he is not trying to "rape me"; quite the contaray on fact as he would not sell the mondial at any price until his mechanic had it fixed up to spec... I was thinking of offering him 14.5-15 for it in its present condition and getting it. He wants 20 when shes up and running again...I have been checking his "wares" for a while now and have thought 2x about the 308s he has had and as told me the history of..they were cheap but he said for me not to get them cuz they didnt have clean titles / one was an accident, etc.

ok now, I was looking and the same guy who has the mondial has a 400 GT, 30k miles for 28,9. chain v12, 6 webers, new clutch, perfect elctronics, very nive overall look; no rust. umm its an older euro import car; it was repainted a while ago...so I am wondering...oh its a 5spd, not an auto.

good deal? I was thinking of dumping my prelude and with some more $ getting the 400...if its a good thing.

Expect to rebuild or replace the circuit board/fuse box in any old Mondial at a cost of $2-3,000. They arc and melt with age. This is peculiar to Mondials. In all other respects, the Mondial is a great car and with a good driver behind the wheel, can easily stay with 308's and GT4's. They have a back seat that two adults can actually ride in (unless you played pro football)and can haul extra luggage if you are just two. The 3.2's look nicer and the QV's are worth the few extra bucks over the 8's, in my opinion. Save an extra $5,000 and then buy one that only needs maintenance, not a major rebuild.

Try to contact Mitchel Defrancis at Autostrada Ventures. He is a Mondial and general Ferrari maven, and a heck of a guy. He can be contacted at [email protected]. I am sure he can assist you.

A guy I know offered me an 83' Mondial for $15K. I wasn't really interested. I could have actually picked it up for a little less and it was in very good condition. I am not sure if it is still forsale or not. I think the one you are looking at is overpriced too.

Omar..

A GT4 is the way to go in this price range. Truly a "pure" Ferrari. Early Mondials can be a big headache.

Mondial 8's in good condition can be had for $19k, there were 2 here in Colorado not too long ago; in your price range I would also consider a 308 GT/4 Dino which was my original choice until I got my GTSi.

When you look for a Ferrari, look for

records that document milage
no rust
no electrical problems
frequent oil changes
If you can, get a used one from Ferrari, they now sell used ferrari's with a limited warranty,

repaints and wheels fixes are common

good luck

I've heard good things on the FerrariList about about Dave Craig's QV Mondial, which is for sale at http://cars.desertworld.com/83mondcp.htm

It's a bit higher that your range, but maybe he'd deal.

Good luck

Omar. Welcome aboard. I agree dont buy a Ferrari that doesnt run especially your first one. Speaking as a Mondial owner you might find an 83-85 QV for the same price, which has more power an a nicer interior. I bought my 83 for 19k this march which just had a 30k service new tires an wheel's etc. Take your time look at a bunch an you will know a good deal when you see it.

Omar,

F-cars are money pits. Expect to pay $1.00 per mile in maintenance. Sure you can cut corners but the major stuff will always bit you in the ass. f-cars are like homes, always have $5000 available for maintenace per year. Also, an $18k to 22k for a Ferrari is called a wreck. expect to pay $25k and up for a decent car. Take your time to find one. DO NOT RUSH.

hmm, that is slightly dishearting, oh well...

Just wondering, anyone then know where I could find a decent Ferrari for around 18-22k? Thats all I have to spend now...I was guessing at 308s and Mondials, and I like the mondials better..actually I just reallly dont like the black bumper on the front of 308s, 328s are amazingly in that respect...

...I live the NE around the NJ-East PA-MD area; any suggestions on where to look for a mondial(and waht to look for in one when/if I see it)? I have never had much luck finding ferraris...:-(

Funny thing, you ferrari guys(n gals) would appreciate, when I was looking for my first sports car, I came on a 355 (wow to say least) and since I had memorized the forza article, I asked the seller about every common problem with the car..he had no answer and was like what the when he fig. out I was serious. If I could afford upkeep/ find a reliable one on top of that, I would have so gotten a TR...I love them with all my heart..but I had to go the easy way out and by a car with less upkeep. Man I love TRs :-(

I'd say run away Omar. What if you fix the fuse box and it still doesn't run? You could easily put another $20k into the car and still have a car only worth $25k. There are quality cars out there for less than $30k that don't need any work.

walk way... Too many stories. Take your time, and find a good one. Fuse box error sounds like crap, sounds like major electrical and the bonnet would cost a couple of thousand to fix. With a major service and all the repairs, you are looking a $25k to $35k car now. That is 308/328 range in good condition.

Clutch is $1200 - $1500 and new flywheel is $1700.

Walk Away

Hi Omar,
Welcome to the site...(the best Ferrari info site around)
You may need to walk from this deal..The Mondials have a history of Fuse box issues on their earlier models.. If you can pick up the latest issue of FORZA Magazine..It features the buyers guide to the mondial coupe and has all the values and what to look fors in buying a mondial...
Good luck in your search......

Hi, I was thinking of buying a 81 mondial with 49000 miles. they want $19900.She doesnt run something to do with a fuse box error. Also she has a paint can hole in the bonnet..eg a paint can was droped on the bonner and made a round dent that cuts through half the way around. Also They have no info on history..but if I do get it I will have all the work doen to bring her up to spec.

My question is, how much for her in her present condition? Also, how much would it be to get a new bonnet and fuse box oem (from the best priced dealer please help)? Finally, if I have a third party do the work, how much for the belts and clutch(eg how much for a clutch/flywheel and belts parts from oem dealer for best price)?

I have always loved Ferraris, and wanted one ever since I began to drive...help me out.
