Last weekend I took parts of the center console and started cleaning them with bathroom cleaners and a hard sponge. Believe it or not, all came off. I did all of the center console, the steering colum casing and the handles for the TS top. Those I had to refinish after, because the paint came all off. It works great. Anybody that has that....some elbow grease and 3 hours later you are done and have $900 worth of savings for new parts. |

Lawrence, what did you use to remove it? Any cleaners? |

I have that on my car but not only on the airvents but also on the center console parts that are black plastic, the steering column cover, the handles for the TS top, the side covers inside for the mirrows, basically all plastic parts in black are melting. I was told this is due to the heat. They are melting. Had also my door handles inside replaced. The heat changed the molucule structure in the plastic and the chemicals will come out and stay on the surface. A friend of mine with a Porsche 928 had a similar thing on one of his plastic parts. It appears to be more of a problem in heat intense States. I will be in Europe in a few weeks and will buy all parts that need replacing. If anyone has an idea how to get rid of this stuff...lets hear it. |

I think this is the goop story. New duct/vents have a thin rubber type of coating to the front surfaces. Enviromental exposure decomposes it to "Goop". I had the goop and was able to remove it. It was like a heavy dirt that was just caked on. Underneath ducts are just plastic. |

I don't see that junk on mine; maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Is it oozing out between the plastic louvers and the dash covering? |

On my friends 348, it used to be the plastic part of the air vent "rotting" due to age and where i come from, the combination of heat and humidity |

I've seen this problem on every single 348, including mine: what is that nasty black sticky stuff around all the air vents and how do I eliminate it? Everytime I touched it, there goes my finger print Helppppppppp |
