I pronounce it "3" "6" "0" "Mohdayna".

But that's just me and my Australia accent, mate. :-)

Leonardo, William and Doody are correct. MOWd-eh-nuh. Hard M, soft "d". Like modern, moodern, modena.

Even within Italy, there are drastically different ways of pronunciation. Travel from north to south, and the accent, even words, will change. So, technically, there is no right way to say it as it will vary significantly with whom you ask. Two Italians may say it very differently.

I think you'll be fine as long as you dont say "Moe-Dee-Nah"... Doody has it right, it is a hard MO + denah.

Tommy,

Call me, and Ill be happy to say the word Modena correctly for you. Everyone on this site knows a hell of a lot about Ferraris, but very little about the correct pronunciation of Italian words. Its understandable. Not everyone was speaking Italian as a child before they spoke English, grew up in an immigrant Italian household, or have had lifelong exposure to parents, relatives, and friends who are all fluent, NATIVE speakers of Italian.

The dictionary site was amusing, because it pronounces Modena as if it were an English word. It couldnt be more wrong. Its not Mo as in the words mod, moderate, mow, or mower.

The Mo is Modena is softer, shorter, and somewhere in between the examples above. Its a very subtle thing, and unfortunately the best way to learn it is to hear it pronounced correctly.

Modena is pronounced "mow-deh-nah" with no accent on 'e'

Modina would be pronounced "mow-DEE-nah", just like DINO (dee-no)

according to my resident expert (my wife, fluent, lived in italy for a while) she says it's pronounced along the lines of:

MOWdenuh.

the "uh" is between an "ah" and an "uh" and it trails out (it's not a hard ending). the "denuh" is more like de-nuh", but it really rolls together. accent on MOW.

doody.

Tommy,

I just got back from Italy and spent the day in Modena and Maranello. We went on the factory tour and let me tell you it was the highlight of our European vacation! Just seeing the Enzo assembly area was worth the trip alone. We were able to practically sit in the car! (We also saw one tooling around Maranello, and met a charming old guy in the street who was a head tailor at the factory for over 25 years. He kept trying to pick up my wife!

I arranged my visit through Algar, the dealer in PA. You can bring three guests, and the tour takes about an hour. They handed out 2002 La Ferrari brochures afterwards.

I highly recommend it for any owner who's going to be in Italy.

In general, most Italian words have the accent on the second to last syllable. The correct pronunciation is Mo-denah. The Mo has a short "o" sound and the denah is pronounced like the d-e-n-a in Denali National Park.
