I ran my C4 Vette for six years in California with no front plate, and have no plate on the front of my 308. No problems so far. I don't know how I would mount one on the 308 w/o drilling holes. I will not do that.

I run my Europa in IL with no front plate. No hassles yet in 3500 miles. I'm armed with the 'special plate holder on order' excuse. That's something Rutlands should sell: a phoney back order recipt for a front plate holder!

I think CT requires a front plate, I dont use 1, dont care. I'll pay the $40 nuisance fine just to be done with it & then I still wont use a front plate :-) Good thing I moved to FL where Martin says there is no front plate required.
What exactly does the law state about the front plate ? How visible does it have to be ? On my Mitsu VR4 in Argentina I had to use a frnot plate. The VR4 has a large mouth opening in front of the radiator so I tweaked the plate & got it to fit lying horizontally in front of the radiator, It is visible , sort of :-)
If the law says it has to be mounted on the front of the car cant we just bolt it to the bottom of the car and comply with the law that way ? How about a color copy taped to your dashboard?

I was shaken down by the South Hampton, NY force 2 yrs ago in my XKE - $100.00 bucks. They had a road block set up and were scrutining each car. One A--h--- actually had the balls to ask what the car was worth. There are better ways of collecting revenue. What a sham.

I think it totally depends upon how anal the cop is. In Oregon, the State Patrol seems to be most 'by the book', the county sheriffs less so, and the local guys are too busy with donuts to care.

I got pulled over and ticketed years ago in a small coastal town by the State Patrol for no plates on a Corvette. What a jerk.

A good friend is a city cop in our crime infested little town. He says that if you aren't shooting someone or dealing drugs on the corner, your chances of being stopped are nil.

Art, I'd be very interested in learning more about that DMV form.

My P 996 has the factory GT3 style aerokit and didn't come with a front license plate bracket. I was stopped in Van Nuys and ticketed by VERY apologetic officers that were part of a month-long program by that division to ticket everyone for missing front plates (I later read about the program in the paper). I had to have a bracket and plate mounted on the front bumper and then have the car inspected by the CHP.

What is that form called?

In Oregon front plate is mandatory however no way I am defacing my 360 or I am sure G-D will punish me.
In 2 1/2 yrs never have been stopped however I do carry the plate in the glove compartment and will just ask the officer for mercy. If it is not forthcoming I'll just pay the ticket.

I've been hassled a few times, and actually received one citation for no front plate in Texas. When I called to check on the fine, the police dept. didn't know there was a fine for no front plate. After a lot of complaining, they agreed to drop the citation as long as I took the defensive driving for the speeding ticket I got at the same time.

Art, at the CHP inspection I had to go thru they were VERY adament about me obtaining a bracket or something to hang that front plate on. Yeah Right. What form is this at the DMV?

Also if you have your plate sitting in the front windshield it's called the gilliotine mount. As many ER's and paramedics around here will tell you that's what they do when an accident launches the metal plate an occupant. That'll leave a mark...

California requires a front plate. HOWEVER, you can do to DMV and get an exemption. There is a form you can use, and if the car doesn't have a place for a front plate, you get exempted.

In Texas you must have a front plate on. I don't hear of many people getting hassled for it, I never did. You never see them on vettes & vipers. The only ones getting hassled are the rice racer kids that bring it on themselves by speeding everywhere & driving like wankers, some just put their plates on the dash board where it can be seen in the windshield. It's just another fine to pay when you get caught.

'Tis state law, and is used as an excuse to stop exotics, just to possibly bust them for something more important. Every time i've been stopped for a speed, the issue has come up, but since the officer or trooper was usually satisfied for writing me up on the speed, they never issued a summons based on the lack of a front plate.
i was stopped once by a cop in my town, late at nite, on the pretext of lack of front plate, but once he established that i was from the town, he let me slide. I usually carry the front plate in the trunk, and explain that i ordered a frame holder from italy, but,...If you fight it i think you'll lose. (BTW, i am a lawyer in NYC, and while i don't have a traffic practice, they tend to be pretty law and order on like that, and you'll get no sympathy from the judge, either.)

got pulled over for the first time the other day for missing front plate - said he wanted to check the car out also - let me go. In the end it is the law so I don't think you can fight it in court. Getting it while parked sucks though

How about just leaving it on the car with the double sided tape. I'm sure 3M makes some double sided tape with some pretty strong adhesive. Just an idea.

John,
have a front lic. plate made, lay it into the window. Take a picture, then have it double taped onto the front grill and take a picture again. Claim, that it came off and you had it sitting in the window all along and have since mounted it back on!

Screw them if they need to!

Thank God we do not have front plates in Florida!

John, in Ontario you have to have a front plate as well. What I've seen some 355 and 360 owners do here is have a decal made of your plate. It looks exactly like a real plate with your real number tag on it but it sticks to the front bumper and can be peeled off. May not be legal, but when you're driving it won't give them a reason to pull you over.

Does anyone knows the rule for having front and back license plates in New York? I always had rear plates on my 355 since I got it, b/c there isn't a front license plate hodler. But today, I got a parking ticket for no other reason than missing my front plate. We all know that this is probably jealousy at work by a member of NYPD, but has anyone had similar problems in NY or other states that require front and back license plates? If so, is front plate mandatory at all times? What alternatives do I have short of having to drill through my front bumper and add an extra license plate holder? All help appreciated.

I'm rather pissed off about this because NYPD is purposely giving me a hard time. I never had a speeding ticket, all my registration and insurance were valid and I never show attitude. To be honest, the ticket is only $55, but I rather pay $300 for a lawyer and get his ticket dismissed just so I can shove it up that "fine" officer's a$$.
