What's all the fuss. They are German ATE brakes. Just pull them of the car and any reputable brake shop can pull them down and put a new set of seals in them. They run the same seals as the 80's Alfa GTV, not expensive. Even if the calipers are split, the small rubber o'ring style seals are readily available. The pistons are a very high quality chrome finish and should only need a cleanup and polish. The bores are easily cleaned out with steel wool or wet/dry paper (500grit) .

Andrew, I had forgotten about White Post Restorations. Good shop. I used them back a few years ago on another car. Henry and Steve are exactly correct. That is the best way to go overhauling both calipers.

Andrew -- I'd send them both to White Post -- the hassle is almost the same whether you do 1 or 2, and the cost difference is minimal compared to your time (if you're DIYing). Even if the "good" one isn't leaking now it could probably still use a refreshening (and it's not going last another 18 years so doing them together makes more sense to me) -- JMO.

I would take the brake pads out of the "good" caliper, check to make sure it doesn't leak, and push the pistons in by hand. If you can do this, then why rebuild it?

If the bad caliper is "stuck", then it is due to rust between the piston and caliper wall, in which case, the piston will have to be replaced. Bad seals, alone, will not cause the piston to get stuck. Replace it, with the seals, with OEM parts will drive the price way up!!!!!!! Better to send it to White Post Restoration, spend $160, and get new seals, and new pistons. They don't use OEM seals, thus bringing down the cost to you. They are warranted for life......how can you go wrong?

A local brake shop will probably only replace the seals.....since the pistons would have to be machined.....and get OEM seals from Ferrari.......the result would be high cost. The Ferrari seals are arould $200....do the math!!!

It does sound like one of your calipers is hanging up. I would have both rebuilt rather than just doing one. I am sure some shop can do a bench job of a rebuild for you and you do the installation of the calipers with new pads and bleed accordingly.

My 84 pulls to one side when braking so I am assuming that the one of the calipers is not functioning properly. I have purchased new brake lines and want to change everything at once. I dont know if there is any problem with my calipers. They are probably original as the brake hoses are original. If i can get my calipers rebuilt for $160 each should I have only the one that is malfunctioning rebuild or both. Is this something local brake shops can do?

In order for these to be a good deal, then, the pistons should be removed, and examined for any scorring, as well as the seals....even then, do you really want a spare set of calipers?

Having a caliper rebuilt is $80 per piston...yours look like two pistons, so $160 per caliper. This includes SS pistons and new seals.....but no re-sleeving. This is because, I believe, the main seal is in the caliper wall on your car, hence re-sleeving is not possible.

I just took the caliper off my TR.....brake line, 2 bolts, and it's off.....very easy. They then must be bled.

Andrew -- Why is the pair of calipers in the picture any better than the pair on your '84?
If they're in good enough condition where just new piston seals/boots would put them in good working condition then $400 is a good deal IMO. If they need more significant restoration (splitting the two halves, resleeving, etc.) then $400 is still a fairish deal IMO for the cores, but unless your existing pair has some other serious problem(s) you could just send your existing pair to White Post for restoration. I want to completely change my front brakes on my 1984 308 myself. How difficult of a task is this? Do I need any special tools. Finally, I have a gent who will sell me the used front brakes as shown in the attached pic for $400. Is this a good deal? I think those brake lines are included.
