I went to Radio Shack and bought a blinking red LED. I wired it into the fuse box so when I turn on the key and start the car the blinking stops. Turn the car off and the blinking comes back. I ran it over next to the steering wheel so it is real obvious. It only cost 2 or 3 dollars and took about 10 min to install. Who knows if it is a deterrent or not but you can't beat the cost factor. |

I agree with David. In fact I asked Cauley Ferrari about insurance in general. They said that their clients paid less insurance on their Modenas and 550's than people next door at the Chevy store with their Corvettes. It was basically because 1) nobody steals Ferraris - too visible and little value in the parts market and 2) they don't usually get driven as a daily driver and can be listed as pleasure use only on the policy. Suprised the heck out of me for sure - but it made sense the more I thought about it. |

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/theft/prod89.cfm This link is for '89.... just change the year in the URL. All the Ferraris are in the bottom 10 or so because of low production. Not sure on the span of years either... This also shows the US production numbers by year (I assume Ferrari provided these numbers to the NHTSA). Actually, pretty cool stuff. |

david, i think that may have been the case 'before the wall fell'. these days absolutley everything with wheels can be stolen and spirited away to russia and get sold for cash within a very short time, no questions asked. so insurance premiums for these cars, in europe anyway, are actually getting higher. |

When I bought my 308 many years ago I was surprised that the premium was relatively cheap, so I asked my company "why?". They stated that generically, their costs are a result of theft and accidents. Resale of a stolen exotic car (is a 308 exotic??) becomes a visible/traceable proposition, so the only viable market is in parts. But they went on to say that there is little market for hot F-parts since Ferrari owners tend to not dabble in that sort of thing - wouldn't you all agree? From this I would surmise that proportionally, F-cars see a lower amount of theft. Does that pass your filters? They also believe F-drivers to be a fairly conservative and safe lot...so go figure! |

IMHO, oppourtunity is the basis for theft. To begin with, there are very few F-cars vs. other cars so finding one to steal is more difficult. Next, most F-cars are usually parked in the front, most visible spots of wherever you go. Additionally, since F-cars get so much attention, it would be more visible if someone were breaking into one than a Toyota or Honda. Lastly, since they are so visible, the police should have no trouble finding the thives driving off if you notice quick enough. Because of the few numbers of F-cars, the insurance statistics would be skewed lower unless they did it as a % of the number of those make/models produced. If you are parking in a well guarded, lighted, private garage, you should be ok no matter what car you drive. If you are parking it on the street in the middle of Miami, you're rolling the dice as you would with any car. I think there's greater chance of vandalism than theft. Most important, get insurance that will cover your loss. |

William, I too wondered about that the first couple years my car was in Palm Beach (its amazing how many cars get nabbed there every year) In the weeks I spend there over the winter at least 5 serious cars get taken. I spent a little extra money, put stated/agreed value insurance on that car and stopped worrying. I know this does not take away the pain of losing something you love, but at least you get your money back to buy another one. Alarms don't seem to help much as all the cars I have seen taken have the best alarms on them. Go figure. regards, Michael |

Talk to your insurance company they will probably have figures on ferrari theft and maybe even ferrari theft in Miami. I do know the most stolen cars as a % of production a few years ago was actually Mitsubishi Montero's, not that it matters at all. |

My baby is coming to the big city of Miami soon so I am a little aprehensive about theft. 512TRs are not exactly as popular as Toyotas or even 360s for that matter but still. I know there are pirates who steal cars & ship them off mostly to South America or Asia. And of course Miami was just ranked as the poorest Big City in the US, Yeah, we are # 1!!!!! ANybody have stats on Ferrari theft ? |
