paul

i always liked the michelins pilot sports, but for way less $ go with the kuhmos, it is truly a great tire....i know you live in canada, but try www.tirerack.com , they have good prices and see if they have a satelite office/distribution center up in your neck in the woods..

good luck my canadien friend..

A lot of good tires, I guess now it's how much are you willing to spend?

Paul, I have the Michelin Pilot XGT V4 tires on my 308 and have nothing but good things to say. They stick like glue, low road noise, and seem to be wearing very well. You won't go wrong by putting them on your car.

i just got the kuhmo mx street tire for my 348 and they are the best product 4 the $ i have ever purchased in any category. stick like a slick on track, comfortable, quiet, great looking tread pattern, unsure of tread life yet and costs less than 1/2 other super tires. look no further

Thanks for the input guys, I dont like the type of tire that causes the car to track all over the place. Mine does that a bit now but more would be unbearable. I guess Ill steer clear of the f1's then. Gerrit also mentioned the Pilot sports as well. Ill look into them. Apparently, you can get pilot sports from costco cheaper than tire shops. Im also a bridgestone fan and will look around. I agree about the big v pattern as well. just doesnt suit the car.

I have done a ton of work testing tires and various compounds. I have driven just about everything on every car so I am going from experience and not just street talk. In truth the Goodyear Eagle F1 is not a spectacular tire. It is good but there is better for the money out there. In fitting tires to a 308 there are two considerations I would look at, namely performance and asthetics.

Performance:

Outright performance with money no object is the Michelin Pilot Sport. An excellent tire that is good everywhere except heavy rain. Even so the difference is marginal over say a Bridgestone S02 Pole Position.

With that said there is a fantastic other option out there that is less than half the money. The Kumho Ecsta. This is a truly phenominal tire that I was so stunned on testing, that I put it on my BMW.

Now is the issue of asthetics

I do not blieve that a 308 looks proper with the current look tires that have a large 'v' pattern in its tread. IMO the tires on a 308 should be the traditional tread block pattern. There are a number of truly excellent tires out there that meet this criteria and I am a fan of the Michelin Pilot because of its durability, grip and low road noise.

At the end of the day the difference between most good tires is very marginal. If you were testing back to back there are small differences but in the long run it really is quite trivial to worry about it. I hope I could be of help.

P.S. I see you are from Toronto; me too. I'd love to see your GTB some time.

We had the Eagle F1's on a 99 Camaro SS (275/40-17)This is what I thought--traction is pretty good, seem okay on hard cornering, but on hard acceleration they seem to break loose very easily and stay that way throughout the entire take off. Another thing that bugged me a lot was that they follow EVERY little crack and groove on the road, so lots of feedback, but it makes it especially annoying after a while esp. in normal city driving--lots of driver control and input needed to keep it straight. Additionaly, and I'm not exactly sure how to describe this, but they are very crisp on their edges. In a way, I like this, very responsive to slight adjustments, but this as well, makes them not very easy to drive.
I am not saying I didn't like the tires entirely. They're pretty good for value/longevity/performance, but not exactly what we wanted. So hopefully that helps, I'm not sure how you like to drive or how they'll respond on the 308 and at that size, but hopefully this will help your decision.
We actually ended up switching over to Bridgestone RE730's which are a little more forgiving in all the departments I addressed and so far the traction seems great. But I cannot say much on the tread life, but the tires aren't bald just yet so...

I asked a while back about tires but didnt get the answers I was hoping for so Ill try again. I need new tires. Are goodyear F1's good? A tire shop told me they suck. I dont believe him. I want a sticky tire that will last more than 5000kms of normal to the odd high speed illegal cornering without going into the weeds. I put around 8-10k a summer on the car and would like more than 1 year use on a set. They are 16's on a 308. Thanks.
