Under the dash on the passenger side is a yellow sleeved lead and 2 pin plug for the airbag. Unplug it and your dash light will stay on. If the light bothers you, pull the instrument pod (two screws down low) and unscrew the light bulb. Since the airbag system is in fault mode, the whole system may not work...and I doubt you can find that out easily.

Just disconnect the airbag.

Scott (and Frank), unless you're good friends with someone at Algar, I believe it's illegal for any dealer to disconnect air bags. Imagine the liability if someone were to get hurt in your car because Algar disabled the passenger airbags... or the switch they installed failed. This is a very sensitive issue with dealers... and most don't want any part of it.

There are companies who can install airbag switches but it requires ugly lights installed on the dash and holes drilled for the key-switches. I wouldn't let any of these guys come within 100 feet of my F-car. Better hold on to that 348 for a few more years.

I checked the Recaro web page but they don't have a rear facing seat. I guess I will ask the dealer if they could install an on/off switch. This way she can enjoy the ride.

From what I've read on this subject and its all theory only since my 348 has no airbags, the greatest risk is to infants since they have to be placed facing backwards.

In any case the Ferrari seats move further back than most saloon (sedan) cars so risk should (in theory) be minimal provided children aren't wearing glasses etc.

But as Doody says, mother knows best, so to keep the peace, listen to what the better half has to say on this subject and no one will get hurt.

Frank, I have a 348 and I take my 4 and 6 year olds for rides all the time. I think my 6 year old boy would cry for days if I told him he couldn't ride with me. But it doesn't have any air bags. I'm looking to get an F355 sometime soon, and jeez... this does present a problem. I think what I'll do is just have one of the boys at Algar Ferrari disable the passenger air bag. It would be nice if it had a switch to turn it off like my Ford pickup truck :-)

i've never taken my 23 month old in the f-car, but i've thought about it recently.

one thought was to put the seat ALL the way back, and make sure you use a car seat that has lots of plastic all the way vertical (ie: at the head area too). that way, other than airbag-burn they're likely not to be hurt by it.

of course, i've NEVER done this, and my wife in fact FORBIDS me to take the boy out in the "stupid cars", so what do i know.

my understanding was that the big problem with infants getting hurt from airbags were because they were in the front seat facing backwards - so the force of the bag would creat nasty physics on their head :-( :-(.

if the seat were all the way back and the baby seat faced forward, i don't see how it could be horrible.

but again, i DO NOT KNOW. don't go doing something without talking to someone who DOES KNOW!

i'm sure your mechanic can shut the passenger side airbag off.

please post whatever you learn, as i am curious as well (and i assume others are too).

doody.

ps: congrats on the new toy :-). i traded a 996 C2 Cab on my 355 Spider. you won't be disappointed!

Just purchased a 96 F355 and wanted to know about setting up a seat for my 15month old. She love my Porsche, which I am giving up for my dream car. The car has a passenger side air bag which means technically you have to either switch it off or no baby. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Frank
