Just a heads up, there's a guy in Houston attempting to sell a Red/Tan 360 Spider on eBay that he doesn't own. He tried to get me to wire a downpayment to his account so he would hold the car for me. What's scary is that he had a copy of the title with his name on it. I found out later from the real owner of the car (a dealer friend of mine) had been asked to fax the real title to this guy the week before.

Regarding Ferraris and eBay, I think it's a great advertising resource for sellers and a great option for buyers, but don't do anything that you wouldn't do with a car you saw in the DuPont Registry or local newspaper: inspect the car, check that the title exists and that the VIN on the car matches the title. If it seems too good to be true, run the other way.

David, sometimes a good offense is the way to go. It seems to me they've stolen your money. I would make one last attempt with a certified letter threatening them with legal action. They have committed grand larceny and you will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. That's a serious felony and they should be held accountable. Plus wire fraud, mail fraud...probably a few more. Tell them you will contact the FBI. And the media. That should get their attention.

The PayPal account seizure saga continues...

Update: All items I sold have now been delivered, and with positive feedback.

New requests from PayPal:

My American Express billing statement showing account number and address.

My bank statement, showing account number and address.

My driver's license...

Delivery confirmation of the last item I sold on EBay.

They already have a copy of a utility bill, showing my address...and have done transfers into, and out of my checking account.

Despite a tersely worded letter..and tense phone call to "customer dis-service", they won't release my funds...

But, they are paying me interest at 1.85%. Wow, that alone might pay for the fricken phone calls and faxes to them...

Why I didn't just transfer the funds out..???

Their requests seem so far beyond reasonable...Agree? Legal path even worth it??

David....awesome Boxer.

I hope that when you sent PayPal your CC and bank account slips that you blacked-out the account numbers. Don't want that info floating around.

Maybe PayPal is using delay for the "verification" of your identity as a way of making a little extra cash on the YOUR money in their account. Think about how much money they could make in interest if they held everyone's payment for a few weeks longer due to "verification" needs.

What really galls me is when an item is listed as "no reserve" but the opening bid is a high dollar amount. Isn't this the same as a reserve price. If it is really "no reserve" then the opening bid should be $1.00 and then actually sold to the highest bidder!!! I also get irritated by the plasma bulbs and related junk when I search Ferrari parts.

I was burned through paypal once. I sold a laptop to a guy who after the sale, and after having paid for it through paypal, requested that I ship it to South Africa. I had been paid and he was paying the shipping, so I said fine and sent it.

About a month later, I get a nasty email from paypal demanding that I fully refund the payment. They had put a freeze on my account. Luckily I had already gotten the money out, prior to shipping the computer. The buyer had reported to paypal that the laptop was never received. I got the postal service to provide signed proof of delivery yet paypal still held my account frozen and demanded a full refund. They said that if an item is shipped overseas and the buyer claims to have not received it, the seller must refund. I said screw you and never looked back. Did they really think I would volunteer to become a victim?

Anyhow... I would steer anyone away from paypal. Items I sell on ebay, I always have full payment before shipping. Items I purchase I always pay in full immediatly. I dont buy from people with any poor feedback. I have never been burned on ebay.

David, moral of the story: take your money out of PayPal as soon as your buyer pays it in. Screw the bureaucrats!!!

In the name of "this is for your own protection" a lot of businesses are resorting to illegal practices. I recently bought an item at a jewelry store and paid for it with a DEBIT card. They would not give me the merchandise without first taking my thumb print (which I refused to give). I pulled my cell phone and called my bank who confirmed the funds were already in the store's name. They still refused to give me the item. I returned it and insisted for an immediate credit. Are there not any laws against this ?

Ebay fraud, fortunately can't speak to that tune...

However, how about this PayPal scam?

Recently, I've sold quite a few items on EBay, using PayPal for payment. Current PayPal balance is about $4000. They sent me an email, freezing my account (no transfers out of PayPal), because "due to the high balance, we need to be sure on who you are...", despite that I'm "verified" and that they have my name, address, cc number, bank account info and ss number. After spending a frustrating half-hour with customer support, they told me that they now need a copy of my drivers license, CC bill, bank statement with address and utility bill...and without that info, the account remains frozen...Nevermind the fact that all the items I sold on EBay have been delivered, and have great feedback...

So...with much resentment, I faxed them my "personal" info.

Any legal comments on this BS?

I bought my 308 off ebay and the experience was wonderful. I met a really great guy and got a great car. The key is making sure everyone clearly understands the deal, making it conditional on a prepurchase inspection and closing it quickly.

Ebay is really just a good way to connect buyers and sellers when it comes to cars.

I have only had a couple of incidents with EBAY. All in all I can say that it is OK. A few bad apples will sour you for sure but most transactions are legit. Just be careful.
