Ferrari 333SP Chassis 001 to Contest Grand American Finale in Daytona Symbolic Motors to Sponsor Final Professional Running of Legendary Ferrari COLUMBIA, Md. (October 15, 2002) - Team 962.com, owner of the Ferrari 333SP chassis 001, announced today that Symbolic Motors will sponsor the return of the legendary Ferrari to Daytona International Speedway to contest the Grand American Finale, Nov. 10. It will mark the final professional race for the 333SP in the same race car used during its introduction to the public at Daytona in 1994. The Grand American Finale is being heralded as an end of an era in sports car racing, as it is the final Rolex Series race for the current open-cockpit SportsRacing Prototype formula. The Rolex Series will debut the new Daytona Prototypes as its premiere class at the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona. "The many accomplishments of the Ferrari 333SP, including its 1998 victory at the Rolex 24, have made it a historic race car. The participation of cars such as this will make the Grand American Finale a truly historic event as these legendary race cars run their final professional race at Daytona," said Grand American President Roger Edmondson. "Sports car enthusiasts will not want to miss the chance to witness this era in sports car history drawing to a close, as well as a new one beginning with the first official testing of the Daytona Prototypes." Wayne Jackson and Patrick van Schoote will pilot the Ferrari 333SP-001 at the Finale. Jackson, who has contested several Rolex Series races including the 2001 Rolex 24 At Daytona with Academy Award-winner Paul Newman, is slated to race one of the Brumos Racing Daytona Prototypes at the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona. Van Schoote is a frequent podium finisher in the Historic F1 Series and a regular competitor in the Japanese FIA GT Championship. "Symbolic (Motors) is one of the world's foremost Ferrari authorities, so we are thrilled to have their support for this historic last hurrah," said Jackson. "The 333SP will go down in motor racing history as one of the greatest sports cars of all time. It will be an honor, to say the least, to be involved with the 333's final professional campaign," noted van Schoote. Scuderia Ferrari of Washington will provide racing support for the 333SP at the Finale. Ferrari of Washington will also look to clinch the Rolex Series GT team and driver championships during the Finale with its #33 Ferrari 360GT driven by Cort Wagner and Bill Auberlen. The Ferrari 333SP-001 was the working prototype and first of the initial 15 Series One 333SP Sports Prototype Racers. It was the only 333SP actually constructed by Ferrari, as the remaining 14 Series One cars were contracted to Dallara and all of the Series Two cars were built by Michelotto. The Ferrari's engine, also number 001, is a direct descendant of Ferrari F1 technology and is believed to be the only 333SP powerplant that still matches its original chassis.
