Ralph, Another issue on TR's is tire size. On the early TRs there were metric and 16" rims. It has been told by a number of owners the metric size tires are no longer available from any source and one must plan on getting new or "other" rims. Another thing to have in the back of your mind when looking this over is the "routine" service can cost from between $3K to $6K if done at a dealership. This involves the dropping of the entire engine/subframe assembly from the rest of the car. I did mine myself and it still cost $1000 for the belts, seals, gaskets, shims, fluids, plugs, etc. It's a little pricey, but one hour behind the wheel and I forgot all about it. Glad to assist in any way I can. I am in upstate NY and don't hesitate to contact me off-line with questions. One hell of a car! |

Ralph -- There really isn't a "euro" TR so you might want to confirm what version -- a CH (Swiss) TR is a lot closer to a US version than a SA (Saudi Arabia) TR. If it's a version that originally came with cats (even if it doesn't have them now) I'd put a little higher value on that in the US market (but still deduct for the missing cats). Another thing to check is whether it has K-Jetronic or KE-Jetronic injection -- not that either won't work well, but again I'd discount a K-Jetronic TR here in the KE-Jetronic US market: K-Jetronic TR (note the gizmos to the left and right of the air box under the intake plenums:
KE-Jetronic TR (no gizmos):
JMOs. Where's the asking price? $4X, $5X, $6X? |

eli im here , ralph... i agree with steve, the compression test #s are way to high,,for an older tr they should be about 160-165 psi or so, also do your self a favor, do a leak-down test... was the compression test done while the engine was hot??,if not, then its a waste of money and time,,should be hot and driven for a while first.. also were the valves open when compression test done?? also, cam cover leaks are a main issue with trs. put it on the lift and check it out from the botton up, little leaks are ok, depends on how much, water pump an issue, if its bad, engine out and mucho money...try and get documentation since day 1 i know there are alot of questions i asked you, but i went through it too with my tr and dont want you to get hurt,,,,,,,,,,, good luck and i can help you in any way, let me know regards, bruce |

Ralph: I'm in the area and know the FoNE guys. Happy to lend an eyeball or two if you need 'em - though I'm no mechanical guru. Also, if you want a second opinion, the guys at Boston Sportscar are less than 10 miles from FoNE and they're good people (so are FoNE). Doody. |

There is some minor leakage on the cam covers. The water pump has stains. The seller has documentation of the W. pump update that was done within the last two years. The dealer claimed I could probably address the oil leaks at the time of the next major within two years. I understand there also might be a drip or two around the clutch seal. The service manager told me that these were typical problems with the TR. I will remind the dealer to double check the AC and fuse box. The car has not been road tested yet. It is raining now in the Boston area. Hey whats wrong with rain? Ralph |

I also think the ignition components on these cars are expensive - check them out |

any history on the water pumps, a/c work? were there fuse box issues with the early trs? where are the oil leaks? Were seatbelts an issue with these cars? Assume all DOT/EPA stuff is in order. |

It is a Euro Car. No cats. The dealer is not involved with the sale. Ralph |

The average compression test values seem a little high for an 8.8:1 TR (but it could just be the gauge) -- is the dealer "involved" in the sale? |

Greetings. I am looking at an early TR at this time. I am having the car inspected at F of N.E. The compression test came out between 185-200 on all the cylinders. There is some minor repainting on the car here and there. No accidents or frame damage. I know that it is very common for the front bumper to be repainted. There is also a few small oil leaks. The major was done two years ago by a reputable independent. I will inspect the car on the 17th. The car has 11K with two owners and documentation. Please advise if there is anything else I should look into. Ralph |
