When in town where doors bother mine, I set it to "L" mode. That reduces the X band beeping. |

I use a V-1 daily and I still see X-band from police (not just supermarket doors). I am in Alabama. |

Dan, I found out how to turn off the X-band - but how do you keep the K band silent until 4 bars? Do the police just not use the X-band radar anymore? I'm in the heart of dixie and things happen real ""slow"" here i.e, change to new radar (Born and Raised Here so I can say this without an uprising) Thanks, Johnny |

I am told Valentine is passive. Bought my V1 in the early 90's. It has been upgraded twice since then. I think it is the best, and I rely on it. I have used it in a state where the police use detector detectors. And I have never been stopped. |

How does the V1 do against detector-detectors? Up here (Ontario), radar detectors are illegal, which seems a little one-sided. As you pass the cop, he hits you with a megawatt signal & is able to pick up your unit's response. Lost my Passport & paid a fine to learn this. |

Turn off X-band. Absolutely worthless. Also make K silent until 4 bars. Other than that, I can think of no changes necessary. --Dan |

Hey Guys You won't believe this one -- Got my V1 in on Friday (ordered after F-Chat responses)! This morning I'm taking the kids to riding lessons (running late as always) as I'm driving through an area where my passport always goes off for the door opening "thingamajig" - my V1 starts to chirp - I look up to see the number 2 - as I am sure all of you have done, I had a quick refresher with the manual the night I received the thing. The manual has stated that this means there are two radar sources i.e. a cop has concealled himself within this door opening radar - I'm thinking yea right! But decide to slow down just in case (otherwise this post may have a different message) anyhow, as I approach, here sits one of SC's finest running radar -Unbelievable! As I pass the direction arrows change and then quiet -except for my pounding heart!! Anyhow - thanks to everyone that recommened the V1 - if it doesn't work another time, it paid for itself today!! V1 for sure, but MOST folks do not know how to customize it (if you so choose). It is a relatively hidden link and NOT included in the owner's manual (at least not mine from a few months back). See: https://store.valentine1.com/lab/MikesLabRpt3.asp Hope this helps. Enjoy The Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Bruce -- You are really telling your age? -- Although I know you are kidding about owning one, just the fact that you remember this product is a sure fire give away! Hey if you can remember the "FUZZBUSTER" then I suspect the TR will be up for sale soon -- those old legs will not be able to push that hard clutch -- keep me in mind!! LOL Johnny |

The V1 rec is beaten to death but here is my mounting suggestion as done in all of my vehicles: - below the windshield tint (severely reduces range in a magazine test a year or so ago) and - behind the rearview mirror with the exception of the rear antennae - remote lights on the top of the steering column - all are wired into power so they are always on when running This seems to shield them from prying eyes, makes muting relatively handy (remote display) and allows me to see activity with the car at full song. |

All my cars have V-1's... and almost all have them mounted just above the rear view mirror, using the hardwire kit to wire into the dome light that is switched with the ignition. Up there it gets good visibility to cops but is far less noticable itself... just blends in with the silhouette of the rear view mirror. At the same time it is visually and audibly close to my head... a good thing when the radio is cranked or that sweet 8cyl symphony is in full song.

John, I can't stand wires, so mine's hardwired. Its not that difficult to do at all. But I also didn't do it with the contraption they provided me with. Valentine provides you with a clip, that well.. slices into a power line and sucks power that way. Instead, I got a clip and mated it where its supposed to go. (sorry for lack of technical terms, I'm not an electronics guy) Its directly put into the 'on when ignition is turned car is on fuse'. Or you can piggy back another fuse if you don't have one in your car. The remote works well in my car, its up by the rear view mirror and down just a hair from that. In much bigger cars I can see that a low setting would be optimal, but most F-cars I would think you'd want to have it high up and visible from the rear. The remote, I can hear.. well, I can hear it from the V1. The remote is just a remote light, which blanks out the V1's lights and illuminates lights where you want them to be - which, for me, is right below the speedo. That might be ok for some, not okay for others. And also... just so you know, Valentine doesnt' offer resellers their product nor does he entertain group buys - even if there are a hundred orders at the same time. =/ |

Randy, How easy is it to see and/or hear the warnings with the remote? I can barely hear my radio! I just got off the V1 website and it looks pretty simple - V1 with or without remote? Any hints or inputs - With the design of the 328 (cig plug in the middle of the console) i'm not sure the remote will be work????? |

Sounds to me like I've been using the wrong unit all these years! I've stuck with Cincinnati Microwave since the Escort days (long time ago) and have never been 100% satisfied. I just "figured" they had the best unit out there - ahhhh that Marketing - All these post and not one for the Passport, I'll order my Valentine now! Thanks! Johnny |

Yeah, i probably concur on that, but, until recently, you pretty much had to have that box pasted to your windshield. Now, there seem to be more stealth installations, ie in the rear view mirror, which makes it virtually unnoticeable. There also seems to be some debate over positioning, ie k-40 in the nose and rear fender v. the higher placement of the Valentine. These things have saved my ass more times than i'd care to admit. |

JS, I recommend buying it from the factory www.valentine1.com You could get a used one for less on ebay, but the used one could have an older version of the software. The factory's customer service is great. I had a problem with the cigarette plug, they sent me a replacement part that same day free of charge. As for the radar detector itself...two thumbs up(if I have more thumbs, I'll give more thumbs up)! To avoid false alarms, you can choose the advance logic mode that will block out most of the false signals. Although the advance logic mode will reduce the radar's range, you still have plenty of time to react to a radar trap...even in an open area. But like all the radar detectors, if the police department opt for LASER...you're pretty much screwed. Check out Valentine 1's website, it's very informative. |

Valentine One is sooooo much better than my old K40 and several other friends (variety of other brands) units that I've tried it's amazing. I got a local CHP officer to recently agree to some tests that I'll try to do by the end of the year, and post. The only place to buy one is online at http://valentine1.com/ Altho I really should set mine up like others did with "X" turned off etc. and laser does go off sometimes but local authorites don't use it, so I must be following Z8s (and that sign on 101).. -Ben |

The V1 is the way to go, in my opinion Unless you can find one on Ebay, you pretty much have to get it directly from the company. If you buy one off Ebay, be sure to get the serial number first and input it on the Valentine 1 website to see how outdated it is. Patrick |

I don't have a 328, so I don't know about wiring one, but the only false-alarms I get are from the neon tail lights of the Z8 (laser alert goes crazy) and also from a large color display on the side of 101 near redwood shores (again, laser). Both times, i simply press the mute button, no problem. As for false alarms on any radar bands - none yet for me. Nothing like you're describing, anyways. --Dan |

Does the Valentine give the false warnings the same as the 8500 - that is the most annoying part -- I can be running out on a highway in the middle of Nowhere pass or be passed by another car and solid on! If the Valentine is better - I'm ordering one right now! Thanks for the input! * Note - how are you wiring the Valentine detectors in - my cig lighter is in the middle of the console - I have a 328 with a big hump over the steering wheel. Johnny |

People may make claims about the range differences b/w the passports and the V1, but in all frankness, the range of the valentine is MORE than adequate (you'd be absolutely amazed, and I'm talking about in the bay area, not out in the middle of montana). The biggest thing about the valentine is the display - not only does it give you direction (arrows), but also strength, band and count - all at once. Plus the programmability of it is fairly good (I turned off X-band, make K band quiet until 4+ dots). In all honesty, no other package is as slick as the V1. And I can't think of a single better investment against tickets. You will be surprised at how many times over it will pay for itself. --Dan |

I know this has probably been discussed on F-chat a billion times, however I can't seem to find it? What I'm wondering, is the Passport 8500 better than the Valentine 1 ?? I have an 8500 and have become very annoyed with the detection of every 18 wheeler that I pass. I called Cincinnati microwave and they admitted because of the high detection limits and other detectors "leaking" this would happen? I haven't heard good things about the K-40 and don't know of any other good detectors. Any information would be appreciated! Johnny |
