I have a book on "The Fastest Cars from Around the World" that defines 'fast' as those production cars (roughly 200 so far) that can exceed 150mph. On that basis I have been 'fast' with only two vehicles, one a Honda Fireblade at 165mph / 265kmh and maximum in a 355 at 180mph / 290kmh. Not saying when or where. I prefer to drive a Ferrari with acceleration rather than speed, although that often follows... ...and I still enjoy it going slowly, as well as round a race circuit.

I better not take my aging 308GT4 to Italy. I don't think it would do a burnout. |

same thing happened to me in italy. got pulled over at one of the toll booths in the 512tr after a terminal velocity run. i thought they were going to throw the book at me, but all they asked was for me to burn out and accelerate as fast as possible.....so i did....happy to oblige officer ! |

I dont know how much it is in mph but i drove the f360 i rented (won it in a lottery) much too fast! in austria youre allowed to go 130 km/h and i reached 260 km/h - but the fastest i ever drove was with a bmw m3 e36 (chiptuned) - 280 km/h... I think these cars - especially the ferrari has to be driven fast - but im sure it is much easier in austria than in US. And if you want to go really fast, you can go to germany where they have no speed limits on highways or to italy where you can do everything if you drive a ferrari!! (a friend of my father drove a ferrari and on his holidays in italy the police forced him to make a burn out and drive really fast (not just one time!) and they nearly got mad - because they love these cars so much!) You have to drive a sportscar like a sportscar.... greets toppi |

"Three lanes and wide"??? thats not wide. The stretch of road I hit 140mph has six lanes going each way. An average freeway in Los Angeles has at least four lanes on either side. How ever I have driven the A1 at 04:00 am and it is fairly clear. Hit 100-105mph in a rental on the way to London. |

You can really move on the taconic where the sprain merges in to the millwood exit. ITs only like 3 miles, but its 3 lanes and wide. 684 between armonk and brewster is straight and open, but cops tend to be a problem. |

solly: 684 is like, well, a speedtrap!? Know some people rave about it for high speed runs, but i always preferred the contours and surface condition of the Taconic, between the Saw Mill and Yorktown exits, in either direction; and, going a little north of there, that big corkscrew winding down the hill, when going in a southerly direction. Often monitored by the State Police as well.... |

It is really easy hit 100mph, and I have done it alot. Crused for about 10 miles at 100-110mph, that didn't last long you can eat up road fast at that speed. Just a couple of weeks ago got up to 120. Have done 130 a few of times, once in 4th gear at about 7000rpm just to hear the wonderful sound the engine makes at that speed. Most I have done was 140mph, The car felt twitchy and I ran out of straight road so I slowed down. Alot of my speed runs go on late at night, or early in the morning, when there are very few people on the road. |

Woke up 6 AM for some odd reason and felt the need for speed. took the 360 onto Rte 684-totally empty. Hit 120. This is very rare for me. Have been lucky at beating the last 3 tickets but that can't last forever. 3 speeding tickets in NY in 18 months and automatic license suspension. Then my beautiful F-cars become so much garage art. |

You hit on the reason that I switched from new 'Vettes to an antique 'Dino'saur. The 'Vette does 80-90 in *second* gear, with more to go. Fast, fast, fast. As are newer F-cars, P-cars, etc. A 27 year old sports car will tend to slow you down a bit, while still giving (probably more) thrills. An old carb Ferrari roars, spits, coughs, and generally behaves strangely compared to the new high performance hardware. Crude .vs. sophisticated. I think this is the secret of the success of the Miata. Anyway, it's great fun to try to make this rolling museum go fast. |

I think i used to drive at higher speeds; for some reason, i don't do this as much any more. I took a ticket for doing about 130 on the Taconic a few years ago, and while the ticket itself did not make me slow down, it did make me think about the consequences if i slammed into somebody doing those kind of speeds on "the street."(And i don't just mean death, but the complete dissipation of my estate thru litigation resulting from an accident caused by jet take off speeds, the indignity of making my wife suffer that, etc.) Problem is, its hard to get a "buzz" in these cars at more moderate speeds. Yeah, snapping thru the twisties is huge fun, but accelerating on the straights is like a release. Also, and this may be because i have not spent as much time on tracks, i don't get a thrill just from driving the same piece of tarmac constantly. I love the open spaces, the forests, the distance and the variations in the landscape that come with touring/rallies. I have a friend that does these incredible distance rallies, like the round the world in 80 days, more recently, did one from i think Sweden to Instanbul. He also has done the Carrera Pan America a few times. I don't know about driving for 10 or 30 or 80 days, on end, in a vintage car, but these things could be fun. This is also one of the reasons i started with bikes.Much bigger thrills a lower speeds (although i can see how, with competence, the speed bug can bite here too). Am also now considering buying a Morgan, for this reason. (bugs in the teeth, raw thrills at more terrestrial speeds). Not being a moralist here, just my personal take. Or may be i'm just getting to be a wimp. |

When I had my 993, I found myself exceeding 100mph on an almost dailey basis. It was exceedingly easy to just be cruising along, thinking you were going 70 or so then glance at the speedo and find you were doing 105 or so. The car was fantastic on the track, but the insulation from a sense of speed on the street when cruising was something I didnt like. Now, my 308 is much better. When going 100, you feel like your going 120. Not only more fun for the street, but probably safer too. This is one reason I prefer really fast cars on the track but older cars on the street. |

it is VERY hard not to drive the F40 at the speed limit. 80 mph on a small windy road feels like your being good and just crusing. |

Well I hit 100-120 everytime I drive the Ferrari. I also hit 100 or more in my VW GTI VR6 every single day. I just make sure my tires are up to it, I check them everyday, along with the oil. It is simple to hit 120 in the Ferrari, but it is scary how easy that GTI VR6 will blast to over 120! Its outrageous and dangerous, but guess what? ITS FUN! I promise I only go that fast when the highway is empty. |

Every chance I get! When I was living in LA, it was easy to average 85mph on my commute home on Highway 10 after 11pm. Did 145mph on the way to Vegas in an Audi S4 Avant on Highway 15. Harder to speed here in Hong Kong since there are many photo radar stations, however, I did do 230kmh in a friend's 94 512TR two weeks ago. The fastest I did in my 348 is about 135mph. |

I have some long highway stretches about 5 miles from home and if I can see far enough ahead I will always take her to a minimum of 100mph but not over 120 yet. My biggest fear is the traffic that seems so far away at one moment as you get her up to speed and seem to just jump out at you in a few seconds when you get up on them. As for how often... as much as can. The car really does run better between 5k and 6k+ in both low and high gears. |

Anytime I get onto a clear road with not much traffic I will do a little run up and down. By run up and down I mean up to 100+ and back down. I never stay up there for more then a few seconds because I don't need the ticket. There have been a few times when I have been on short trips and have been cruising at 100 or so with 4 or 5 other cars. That is always a blast and the car feels rock solid. 100mph might as well be 70. |

I've probably only been over 100 five times in 2 years. In Dallas I'll hit 90 for just a couple seconds. My thing is 2nd-3rd gear twisties bouncing off 8k. I also try to redline it at least once every drive, once warm. Right after the two times I've tracked my car it's run the best ever. |

Ouch! I hate to admit this but I start out slow but always seem to hit three digits - typically on the on/off ramps My car just feels "loose" until I give it a little gas - then a little more - a little more and what do you know "the floorboard"!! just parked my 328 in the garage after a very interesting ride home - seems two kids in Beamer wanted to play ( i usually ignore but I felt playful tonight) after demonstrating how well the car handles the aforementioned on ramps and finding the floorboard a few times on the straightaways - I slowed and as they pulled up beside me the passenger yells out "FERRARI'S ROCK" -- my thoughts exactly!!

i;m with jim, since i'm unfortunately in the city most of the time, traffic limits excessive speed but i love ripping through the gears (well, at least a couple of the gears!). i manage to stretch my 2 mile commute to work to about 10 miles if i'm in the f-car that day - and i always seem to have time to go out for lunch that day as well... |

Ron, Since I am living in Germany I always go for max speed on the Autobahn from Bonn to Cologne after warming up the engine sufficently. I think its always wise to push a sports car engine to the max for a short while. The car easily does 290 km/h on the odometer and its just fun to drive a Ferrari as it should be: Fast!!! Pretty well every time because it will always involve a motorway section to the trip and most people in the UK drive on the M'way at those speeds, regardless of what car they are in. I drive there regularly and it seems pretty similar to me in good ol USA. Most ignore the limits on highways! Now if the question was talking about 130+, I dont do that quite so often, but v'occasionally when I consider it safe to do so. |

Although I do not drive a Volvo, when there is a clearing and I do feel comfortable that I will not put anyone at risk, (and in the mood), I will push my car to the limit- never a borrowed car however. I'll let you know right now, the Volvo S40 is still pushing at 130, Audi A6 4.2 was still pushing at 140, and the Mercedes SL500 (Silver Arrow) reaches the limiter without a problem. Considering its safe, I have no problem pushing the car. I have been in friends cars where I did not feel safe however. On of of those NJ fun runs, I hit 170 in a Viper w/ Nitrous racing a modified ZO6, I was holding on for dear life! |
