Wow, Dr. Tommmy--Great story! To have a ride at 15--no wonder you're hooked :-). That 82 GTSi is simply beautiful--sends shivers up my spine to see a different one in marrone. These cars send shivers up my spine anyways!

Here is the car I mentioned earlier in this thread. I don't have a scanner so I took a picture of a picture. The pictures are of a 1982 308 GTSi taken in July or Aug of 1983 when I was 15. Funny story; the owner's wife was grocery shopping and saw me taking pictures of the car. The grocery store and her husband's office shared the same parking lot and she just happened to be there at the same time as me. She came over, introduced herself, and invited me to her home that night so her husband could take me for a ride. I think it was the second most excited I had ever been at that time. I went over later that night and rode around Huntsville for about a half hour. It was my first ride in a Ferrari. They were very very nice people.mar1mar2

Here is another 308 GTB, someone from the FerrariList had it a few years back. I show it as s/n 23901, I think that it was in Texas.

Wow, Mike...it truly is a small world indeed! I'm very glad to see that the 308 found a great home and owner -- it seemed so lonely sitting there collecting dust in the showroom. F. of C.F. is a great place with great people there, and I always stop in to pay a visit whenever in the area.

Sounds as if you live in one of the very scenic areas of Albuqurque -- can't get any more picturesque than that. If I'm ever in town, I'll look you up and give you a call.

Enjoy your beautiful 308!

My 83' 308 QV is "Marrone". There are more than 2 of them but they are very rare. Mine is the original with the original paint. If anyone wants to see a pic please let me know and I will send it to you. I think it is a very nice color. It looks great in person. Photos don't reflect the true color IMHO. Great looking car.

Glad to see that the brown is appreciated! Eric, would you believe that this 308 is the exact one from Ferrari of Central Florida you had checked out? Small world :-). I actually used to live in Central Florida, and was there visiting my folks when I decided to check out the local dealership. The rest is history! The car had indeed been on the showroom floor for a while--I'd estimate at least a year. Initially, when you've got the fever, I think that the brown can be a turn off to a lot of buyers, especially to first-time ferrari owners that the 308 largely caters to. It's in amazing shape, and has been behaving very well. It just needed a good home :-). The 308 loves the dry weather out here!

Albuquerque is doing pretty well these days, I'd say. Growing very quickly, yes, especially on the west side (really the only side the city isn't bounded by (east mountains, south air force base, and north indian reservations). I live in the far NE heights, right on the base of those Sandia mountains--it's beautiful.

Taking the 308 up to the Sandia Crest (the peak) is my favorite road trip so far...

If you're in town and get a second, look me up!

Miked, thanks for the Marrone 308GTB picture--it's really great to see the color in a different example...

i have pictures of dinos in this color and they look great. there are several well used pics of this dinos that pop up in some of the classic car books and i have to say that it is nice to see the shapes accentuated by the paint.

I think the factory name for various shades of brown is prefixed with "Orro" or "Orio". My favorite of them is the lightest one called "Orro Chiaro". Most people would just call it gold.

The 308 that Vintage Car Store had was a GTB, a '77 if I remember correctly. It looked just like the one in my post.

I was actually looking for a Marrone GTB when I came across the the car (red) that I ended up buying. There are not many of them out there but I think that it is an excellent color on a 308 as well as several other models. Vintage Car Store of Nyack had one a few years ago. Here are two photos of Marrone Ferraris (the 308 pic is somewhat messed up). I still don't understand why people think that a Ferrari MUST be red/tan, IMO very few street Ferrari models look their best in red and don't even get me started on tan (pumpkin) interiors.

Another thing I forgot to mention: About 2 years ago I bought an old unbuilt 308 plastic model kit. I had small amount of the merrone metallic paint made and painted the model with it. It's a perfect match to the car I fell in love with back when I was 15.

If Ferrari only produced 2, then the other is a 1982 GTSi that was first owned by a doctor in Huntsville, AL. It was the first Ferrari I ever rode in way back in the summer of 83. I have about 20 pictures of it from then including some very good 35mm shots. It is a very unique color. I wonder if that is the one in Connecticut. I will try to post the pictures.

I've seen marrone on a 365gtc/4. I think it looks very nice on that car also and helps it's lines. Once again it is nice to see some non-red Ferraris for a change. Mike, your 308 is one of the nicest that I have seen.

Beautiful 308 Mike -- and I love the color as well!

I actually considered purchasing one very similar to yours (brown with brown interior) from Ferrari of Central Florida in nearby Orlando, FL. It had been in their showroom for quite some time.

How's Albuquerque, NM these days -- still growing by leaps and bounds? I use to live about 2 hours away in Window Rock, AZ, and visited Albuquerque at least twice a month (have a grandmother who still lives there). Always enjoyed the nearby scenic Sandia mountains.

Congrats on your "new" 308!

Saw what I think is the same or similar color on a new Maserati coupe in the showroom of the F dealer here in Portland,Or.
Beautiful color-almost like a taupe color.

The car was repainted in 1989 very professionally and to original color. The very inside of the doorjambs were left alone, so I have a good idea of the original color. The "new" paint had a bit of clear coat mixed in, I think that might be responsible for the shimmer / gloss look as opposed to the more, flat, matte look that some of the older 308s can have.

"Mythical," eh? Well, it's certainly opened my eyes to beyond red. This guy Paul's got a really great site, www.ferrari308.com, with a section called "more than red." So many colors, especially with the 308s--I think Ferrari were experimenting a bit here :-).

Perhaps one day I'll be so fortunate enough as to have another F car to add--right now I'm really attracted to the medium to dark blues. What color!

Great looking car Mike. Drive it and love it. I have heard of the mythical brown cars but have never seen them. Is yours a repaint or the original?

It looks very clean.

Hey guys,

I'm a new owner of a beautiful 78 Ferrari 308 GTS. In my year-long search for this car, my goal was to find the best example possible. Well, I did--and it just happened to be brown. Actually, Metallic Brown, or "Marrone Metalico". The interior is also brown, called "Luggage." I have heard that there were only two 308s like this produced (the other one's in Connecticut, USA, I understand from the previous owner).

In time, this color quickly grew on me--it's mysterious, rare, and dynamic... It changes from a golden color in the sun to a shiny off-black at night.

In all my years as an enthusiast, I had never seen a metallic brown Ferrari until I saw this one (see attached picture). According to Keith Bluemel's "Original Ferrari V8", the exterior color was called "Marrone Dino" and was only available on 75-79 (carbureted) 308s.

It's definitely a lot more subtle in the eyes of the local constabulary, and if I can ever get to a concours event from Albuquerque, NM, I think it'd stand out pretty well :-).

Has anybody seen a brown (ahem, Marrone) Ferrari? What kind? Pictures?

--Mike
