Mike you are right. Those carpet dyes are basicaly paint. I will tell you though on black carpets a good dye is Esquire or Kiwi leather dye. Man that stuff will penetrate and stay there. To bad there aren't many other colors like that.

I've redyed my floor mats using Leatherique's stuff... didn't do my carpets, but it's the same process. You thin it out and spray it LIGHTLY (or your carpet nap will get stiff) and it comes out great for refreshing the color.

Giang, Wilton wool is original material. They do it the same way at the factory. An old Italian lady stitches the trim to the carpet and in it goes. No backing, you should be able to lift it up and see underneath, my GT4 has buttons to secure it to the floor.

But then they wouldn't be original.
:-p

interesting. does the carpet need some sort of backing? are there colors that match the original?

Todd, here's a pic of my car.

I second Jay's motion. I have done this countless times on cars Ive had. Porsche
911 carpet (those are the cars Ive done) is probably more expensive that the Ferrari carpet ($45-66 a yard) but with a little sweat equity like Jay described, you will be waaaay happier.
Dont be afraid!

Don't cheap out, but do it inexpensively!:-) All you have to do is order the wilton wool and use your old carpet as a template (make sure the right side is up). Cut it out and have an old Italian lady sew on the trim. It'll cost you a few hundred. I was cutting out my carpet just before I posted this...easy!

I guess my carpet might be a little faded but I never considered redying b/c so little carpet actually shows.... with floor mats, seats, GTS top & cover taking up 90% of the carpeted area.

BTW, I hope you 328 owners put pictures in your profile...I love to see other 328's.

Cheers,

TTG

Russ,

I too am interested in carpet dye since my carpet shows signs of fading. Let me know how it goes and what you ended up using. I assume the carpet needs to be removed, and thus the seats, rails, dash pieces, mouldings etc as well??

$1000 for carpet? What the hell, why are these f-parts so expensive? They quoted me over $1000 for s/f badge's, Oh my god what is up with this? I understand expensive cars[you know engineering and all] but these parts prices are out of control. Sorry just had to vent. life goes on.:-)

Jim. $14 for a jug of dye v. $1,000 for new carpets. Also I am not confident that I can figure out how to replace the carpets.

Russ, why would dye the carpet instead of replacing it?

Russ, Mar-Hyde makes a great product for dying carpets. I have used it on some of the old collector cars of mine and like it a lot. Leatherique is a good name and I suppose the product is ok. I have only used the Mar-Hyde. I have seen both products at Pep Boys.

Leatherique sells carpet dye and I am considering redying by beige carpets in my 328. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this.
