Yeah she is. She goes to all the F1 races too to watch Ferrari (you know the German loyalty to Schumie).

I agree that this is not a problem on par with say world hunger, but it still is a lot of money for what is esentially a luxury item and I want to be sure I can live with it for a few years and not always think "I should have bought something else".

Bought my 246 for the look and mystique, but it is absolutely not suited for a drive through Manhattan in rush hour which I have to do often enough, so I need a car that is tractable in occasional traffic yet has the performance I would like on the open road.

A friend of mine has a 550 but I have not yet driven in it, and the only other Ferrari I have driven was the 348 spider which I did not love (sorry all you 348 guys; it looked great but I thought build quality was nowhere near that of a 246).

I'm going to try and rent a 360 for a day or two to see what it's all about. The problem with all of this is that you never really know if you love the car until you live with it for a few weeks and daily rental rates are so ridiculous that it doesn't make sense to rent a Ferrari for a few weeks.

Love the 360.Switched with my friend who has a 550 for an hour's ride on a great road. Much prefer the 360.Clutch is lighter steering lighter but still preciseand 6 speed gearbox much smoother.360 more torqey at low end and exhaust sound on 550 muted while 360's are orgiastic! Haven't driven either on the track yet.
Everyone should have such a problem.A kid oogling my 360 said "you are the luckiest guy in the world" I agree!

I knew what you meant, 550's aren't very common.

I'm not saying anything along the lines of getting tired of the 360, what I'm bringing out is that the 550 is much more rare. Ferrari makes 12 cars a week, 8 of which are 8 cylinder cars. The other four are divided between the 550 and the 456.
There are drawbacks to the 550 though. With the added rarity is also increased prices in parts, and a 12 cylinder is more expensve for major services. But I would expect that the 550 is a better made car by now as compared with the 360, the 550 has been around for awhile and I'm sure they have it right by now.

Maybe you see them around often enough. I dont think i could ever tire of seeing them. I only see one on the road once or twice a month, if im lucky.

Yeah you see 360s around often enough, you never see 550s. I've only seen one on the road ever. Instead of convincing your wife about a 550, just don't tell her. I would imagine she would like the 550 more than the 246.

Thanks guys. Now all I need to do is convince my wife that there really is a sound business reason behind this purchase.

Since you have that Dino 246, you've already experienced the mid-engined Ferrari, so forget about the 360 and step up to a 550. There are a couple here in Vancouver and I spoke to an owner of one of them recently, from the club. He traded-in his TR for it, he just loves it, plain and simple.

Deciding between a 550 and a 360 is a nice problem to have. You really can't go wrong.

550 is less flashy, IMO. It is heavier. Has more torque. Needs Tubi exhaust. And has a two-year warranty. Definitely feels like the top-line car in terms of detail and build. Would be very easy to live with on a daily basis if so inclined. An updated 550 is forthcoming. Supposedly 6.0 litre w/paddle shift as option.

360 is more visceral to drive. Sounds incredible. Maybe the best steering available. Much roomier than past 3 series. Perhaps a better candidate for track events although the 550 is hardly weak on a circuit - particularly a fast one. The 360's a bit like a big shifter kart. Has a three-year warranty.

Nice choice to have.

I am thinking of buying either the 550 Maranello or the 360 Modena. Prices are very close for a '00 550 and a new 360. I am looking for something restrained so I'm leaning toward the Maranello, although I love mid-engined Ferraris. Anyone have any feedback on these cars? Anything particular to look for in a used 550 model other than the usual records, service, etc.?
