Don, I personally think you got all the money for that 450SL. I have had a couple of them and they were great cars. In my opinion the 450 was the best engine in that car. The 308s had timing chain problems and the 500 and the 560 had cam problems. However that body style is dated and has been played long enough and people don't want that look anymore. I think you did ok. |

The auction worked out pretty well, for me at least. I sold the 450 for $8200, which is a little less than I might have gotten if I'd advertised it heavily and worked at it, but not much and the car is gone right away with no hassle. Interestingly there didn't seem to be that many dealers at this auction. Most of the people I spoke with were end customers, including a few acquaintances that I ran into. In general, things were pretty slow. Not that many cars sold, and they were having a tough time getting bids. Right in front of me was an 84 Mondial Cab. Since I also own a Mondial Cab, I was interested in how it did. It was bid to $22k, but didn't sell (it was reserved at $26k). This Mondial has been floating around for a while-- it was on eBay not long ago, I don't know what it got bid to there. The 355 Spyder didn't show up, so I didn't get to bid on anything-- probably better that way. |

go prepared to bid on the 355 spider. with the economy the way it is there won't be that many dealers willing to have their cash sit idle for 6 mths before they manage to sell it. bet it goes for low 60's, maybe lower. |

I'll post what happens. I'm going to put a reserve on it, so if it turns out to be a total lowball, I'll figure something else out. I have a pretty good idea what the car is worth, so I think I can put a reasonable reserve on it. If what you guys are saying is true and it's just lowball deals, mabe I should bid on the 355 spyder! |

So people are suggesting that cars for sale on dealer lots are purchased at auction with the same care and consideration that an individual would give to his potential purchase? I seriously doubt it. A dealer buys a car at auction because it is just another profit making item for him. A person buys a car because it is a major purchase that will be major transportation for years to come or a personal hobby car that will become a labor of love. Dealers don't spend weeks and months searching for each individual car that goes on their lots. They buy multiple cars at a time. Individual people put far more effort and research into their purchases. The comparison is apples and oranges. |

hardly seems worth selling it imho. you will probably get less than $5k for it, and since you know the car its probably worth more to you than that. no where to put it just to use on sunny days? no kids to give it to? etc. just feel you are better off not giving it away at some auction where everybody will lowball you. |

Incidentally, the F-Car I'd like to get is a 365GTC/4, but it will probably be some months before I do anything. |

It's a collector car auction-- you can check it out at http://www.silverauctions.com/auction.asp?ID=196. There are two Ferraris so far (a 355 Spyder and a Mondial). I probably could sell the car privately if I wanted to put the effort into it. I did advertise it in the local paper for a couple weeks, with minimal response. This way it will almost certainly be gone by the end of the weekend, with little hassle on my part. The auction is inside, so I will probably take the hard top off and put the top down, sounds like good advice. |

I've recently seen a few Ferrari's that I've seen at auction end up on dealers lots and some recently on e-bay. You may end up getting more than you expect. Hype drives up the price and if the weather is nice, more prospective buyers. Good luck. |

I know several dealer/brokers that buy cars at auctions all the time. I also know some guys who go to auctions - check out the cars and make deals prior to the auction itself. It does seem you could find a private buyer for a clean 450 SL. |

Call me ignorant, but who is the type of person that buys a car at auction? EVERYBODY that I know of, when looking for a car to buy, always researches the purchase for months, then examines the car from top to bottom, drives it at length, and gives the car an extensive third degree, time consuming examination before handing over the cash/check Most used cars on dealers lots are from the auction. 50% of the people buying used cars are buying an auction car, marked up significantly. |

How can any of this be done with a car up on the auction block? I've heard many horror tales of cars at auction, and if I was looking for a serious car with serious money, an auction is the last place I would look. |

Sorry, can't help with the value on that car, but I would recommend taking the top off if it's not going to be exposed to the elements too long. If it's a public auction you'll especially want the top down. A nice write up answering all of the typical questions would help your cause. These normally include: * Basics- year model, miles * Service history available & recent work done * Lack of accident evidence * Copy of CarFax * Copy of Kelley Blue Book retail value (this will be a high number) * Statement of all systems working properly (assuming this is true) * The fact that you have the title in hand (you're not a broker) * Smoker / non-smoker * Number of owners * Any other interesting facts about the car that may distinguish it from the crowd What kind of an F-Car is coming home? -Jeff |

It's a 1979 Mercedes 450SL. I have to clear a garage spot so I can add an F-car! I'm thinking of writing up a summary of the service history (last two years, which is all I have) and leaving copies in the car. I'm also wondering if I should take the hard top off and show it with the top down, or maybe with the soft top up. |

Which car are you selling? If it's a newer one, I may be able to help with some values. -Jeff |
