The racing 550's are in the GTS class. They have a bored out engine and extensive mods. That red 550 looks like the Prodrive car driven by Tomas Enge.

The 360GT runs in the GT class. I'm not familiar with that particular 360GT though. The Scuderia Ferrari of Washington 360GT runs in the Grand Am series and have won 5 in a row. They need to finish at least in 18th place in the final race to win their class championship as well as the driver's championship.

Not only BMW gives US customers this treatment.

Yes, I meant "rotors" and not "calipers". Yes, Porsche & Ferrari cast the holes...but they are really there for average street work, wet or dry, and yes, they can crack in serious racing applications or even in a hard run in a DE, if they are poorly made. However, I do believe they are for more than looks--they are for water dispersion in seriously wet street conditions. That is why, in addition to Ferrari & Porsche (who has used them for years & years), BMW puts them on the Euro-market M3 (but not on US market M3's----but don't get me started again on BMW buttf!cking its US customers with hand-me-down equipment on performance models...:-( )

You mean cross drilled rotors. If you ever raced your car you would know that those are only for looks. Any cross drilled rotors will crack that is why nobody is using it if thet race. Porsche uses cast hols in their rotors. This makes them stronger.

The fins extract heat from the front brake area. These cars (like most race cars) have ducts bringing in fresh cool air directly to the center of the brake disk, whereupon it goes through the disk's internal cooling vanes & out the rim. These fins then vent that heat out of the car for better brake performance & longevity. This is also why most race cars do NOT have the drilled calipers we find on our modern Ferrari, Porsche, etc. street cars, but rather the disks just have curved slots in their surface to break up water film & the gas layer that sometimes forms in hard braking. Street cars can, however, use the cross drilling to more effectively break up water in typical street use.

Those fins direct air in to the brakes

Though I've never thought too long about the "fins," now that you mention it, my guess would be that they are vents to keep air moving through its insides (as they are positioned to get air sucked out, rather than to capture and take in air).
Perhaps it could work like such fins found on the hood or over the fenders as found on the 308/328s--fans and radiators workin together to cool that puppy off.
But, like I said, that's my guess; I'm sure someone on here has a pretty good idea--speak up...

hey - what's with the fins on the front hood of the 550s above the tires? are they intakes to get more air to the engine or exhaust to get heat out of the compartment? they look very mean!
