I live in Canada. Their is a dealer called gentry lane in Toronto that used to be a Ferrari dealer until Ferrari Of Ontario opened and ferrari pulled their franchise. But the Owner of the place died a few years ago..and he had a 288GTO. The car is now with his widdow and she will not sell the car. It has been sitting in her garage for the last ten years with out being driven. It does start and run, I know this because one of the guys that worked at gentry is a friend of mine and he goes up there every few months to start it and let it run. I've tried to talk him into takeing me along but he said the widdow does not want anybody to know that the car is still around.

The only person that could give you the real story would be (goes by the common nick name for Richard, but F-Chat will not allow me to type it) Merritt at the DOT. I think if you look in back issues of Forza the issue with a buyers guide on the 288 and the buyers guide on the 512 Boxer, both list his number. If you don't have these issues I will check tonight at home for them.

Matt,
The person who told me this was at the New Orleans Concourso. I had a little trouble myself believing it though.
One other thing that surprised me was the amount of misinformation being spread by other people there. One guy who had a car there in the show was spouting off all kinds of BS about the F50. I had to hold myself back from telling the guy what the deal was. I hope someone here can unequivocally answer this post.

Believe half of what you see and non of what you hear. If they were crushed by the Government then someone in customs crashed it. I am sure the guy was referring to the importation laws that state a NON-converted car can only be in the us for a specific amount of time for "testing purposes". If the car exceeds that time then the Government MAY sieze the car. I have never heared of that actually occuring. There are several 288's, 959, and McClarans (sp?) in the US. There are even a few Bugatti EB110's around.

I know of a few that were crush by their owners :-). As a matter of fact I think I remember a friend of a friend in highschool wrapped one around a tree. I would not be surprised if less than 200 remained

NOOOO!!!!please say it isn't so!i do know they can do this but also i believe that if the cars are not compliant they could just as easily send them back to europe.man that would be terrible if true and also extremely unnecessary in my opinion.how hard can it be to put the thing in a container and ship it?
interesting point John,i would love to hear more about this as well.TIA

I was talking to a guy who owned a 288 GTO and he was saying how several of the cars got crushed by the U.S. Gov't for not meeting various specs and legal issues. Could someone go in to more detail about this? I know that 272 were produced, I just wonder how many remain at this point in time.
