I am the 2nd owner of a 1979 308 GTS. The car had a 30,000 mi. service by the owner at his expense when I bought it even though it only had 5200 miles on it. It had been in storage for 18yrs. I had people calling me trying to buy the car because they had tried to buy it in the middle 1980s. The mileage was the same then as it was when I bought it. So with a through check with DMV and other records I felt this was the car I was looking for. So far it has been a great car. I now have 8000 miles on it and I am very pleased. |

I have bought and sold 5 Ferraris so far. I kept them a rane of 7 months to 33 months. In most cases, the car was much better when I sold it than when I bought it. Conversely, a few years ago a guy in my business found out I had an interest in Ferraris and told me he wished to sell his 84 308 which he bought new. I figured this might be an opportunity. Was I wrong! The car was very rough and maintenance was spotty. The guy was pretty clueless when it came to driving technique as well. Had about 30K on it with a 30K done and yet he ended up getting high 20's for it because of condition. A car's condition and service history reveals a lot about its previous owner(s). Dave |

I think it really just depends on how the previous owners treated it. If you have all records and your PPI turns out ok I wouldnt worry. I am the 7th owner of my 88 328 and it has been very reliable, has won a platinum, and nothing ugly has turned up in the 3 years and 12000 miles I put on it. |

I wouldnt worry about it.Buy condition and service records.I turn over my daily drivers every 2 years. After 10-15 years or so it dont take long to get 6 owners. |

My 1994 348 Spider has 17xxx miles with the last major service done in June 2000 at Shelton. I am the third owner not counting the dealer that sold it to me. It has new Pzeros, all tools, books, records, indoor cover, SpeedLingerie bra and factory luggage. It is in excellant condition and I would sell it for $74,000.00 at this time. |

David I have a car that has had 5 ownership changes. You have to be careful there though. Two changes were within the same family. The guy transferred title to his company to write the car off as a company expense, now its truely 4. The rest of them were in the same town in FL, likely that was a transfer within family as well. and one was very short ownership which leads to believe that this was a dealer title. What really counts is the recent service and how the general condition of the car is. You can probably find a one owner car that has been abused and is worth sh*t compared to 5-6 F-Chat owners that take care of the car. My car has 28K Miles, is a 1994 348 Spider in great condition and lots of extras. Today I will let the car go for $ 67,500. Just so you have an idea where you are. 30K was done in 2000.

Dave, That's a lot of owners, but I would consider 20K miles in last 2 years a good thing. The car could not have been in the shop much to rack up that mileage. Also, even if the guy was young and aggressive, most of that mileage must have been relatively normal driving. The drivers I worry about are those who take it out once a week, thrash it for 20 miles and put it back in the garage. If the new clutch is this car's first, that would be a really good sign since not many get to 30K on the original clutch. That being said, a PPI is clearly indicated and IMO anything over 60K is too much for this car. There are plenty of nice spiders out there and there is no reason to buy one you are not comfortable with. Dave |

'Any' is too many, but in the real world many of us don't have the means to get new (me for sure) F car, so we have to cut our cloth to suit so to speak. I found in looking for a decent 993 Porker that the number of owners in general 'was' a factor in condition. In the end I didn't find a single car I would accept and I must have looked at more than 50 cars, main dealers included (in fact theirs were some of the worst (poor repairs, knackered interiors, even deep rooted rust!) I eventually got so p'd off looking for a loved Porker 993 and in passing found an 11 yr old F348 that had just two previous owners, the first for over 10 yrs, the next for 6 months. There was a good reson for the 6 months guy so I bought. I would'nt draw a line at say 4 owners but would certainly start feeling less happy as I got toward that number. Unfortunately in the uk, cars were used as currency in the early 90's so they clocked up many owners in short timescales as a stock commodity rather than a useable car. 996 Porsches can have typically 3, 4, 5 owners in just 2 to 3yrs in the uk, with 993 being higher than that, with interiors that damn well show it. |

I am still trying to contact all the previous owners to help solve the mystery. The car is cosmetically in good shape but I am more concerned about the mechanical stuff. Since a new clutch was put in and other maintenance was done properly does this "clean" the previous owners driving styles. I also have to think the last owner who drove the bulk of the miles drove it a hard manner ( confirmed he was younger guy, you know the type ) I am having an independent garage do an inspection, should I let the past bother me. As for dollars - Negotiating still - around mid to low 60's - |

I looked at a 43K mile 348 that carfax showed 12 owners in 13 years! Paint was in great condition, but interior was in rough shape. The 2 just didn't add up in my opinion without a full repaint. |

Well, she could probably show you a thing or two you hadn't seen before ;) My 78 308 GTS had four POs before me (granted, that figure is loaded by once since the wife formally took possession of the car after the divorce... Oooh!) Each one was fanatical about the maintenance and focused on a different area of the car. In my case, with the records, I don't think of it as a negative. --Mike

Pass. 3 is max. So 5 owners logged only 13K. Sounds like the car broke a lot and they dumped it |

IMO, if you have all the service records you should be ok. If you are still not comfortable, have it check out by the dealer. Since this is a preowned vehicle, you will NEVER know who, or how many different persons and HOW the mileage was put into the car. The only way to get over this is ...get a new one. |

Found a 348 Spyder with 33,000 miles - all records - including new clutch and engine out major done recently - upon further inspection I have found that the car has changed ownership 6 times and the last owner has registered almost 20,000 miles in the last 2 years - This leaves me with the question - if I buy the car is it like dating the girl that everyone else did in High school - SO many different drivers, could this be bad or should I not worry ?? |
