Was on edge big-time:
* Nov '87, picked up a '79 308 in Dallas...
* Leaving Dallas at rush hour on LBJ, bumper to bumper, i was afraid i was gonna plow into whatever was in front of me(had NEVER driven ANY kind of high, or for that matter, medium performance car).
* Guess what, it was raining at the time.
* North on hiway 287, well it's getting dark early...
* Hitting every little town along the way on FRIDAY nite, which in Texas, is FOOTBALL nite.
* Cops trolling looking for teenies goin' too fast, they've just gotta check out the 308 wheels, so much so that on more than one occasion, i had to pull into 7-Eleven lots to get 'em offa my tail.

After i got used to it a bit, was just a blast, but not on that trip...only other time that was scary was one time i took it back down to DFW for some service, and on the way back had to drive a considerable distance in snow...slipped up and left my chains/studded tires at the house, so "slip slidin' away"...

Took delivery of my 328 today. I feel ecstatic. Scared - not at all. I cured that feeling by driving my dad's F355 before I decided to get my own Fcar.

Jeff,
Well done - you've captured an emotion that apparently just about all owners have experienced. I am 4 months in to my first F and the 'kind of scared feeling' is now migrating to one of thrill and confidence.
One thing, while the car was inspected before buying, after getting it home I took it to my local mechanic who is very knowledgeable about F's. Despite a couple of very minor suggestions, hearing him say "you've got a very nice car" put my mind at ease and allowed me to focus on the driving aspect rather than "damn, I hope it's not gonna break"

Sorry for the off-topic conversation

David S, nice pics.
I can surely believe that it's hard to ride an F-car which isn't yours. Always afraid that you might hit something and that the costs will be huge. Luckly for you that you found out about the scratch :-) Hopefully you can get that quicktime movie to work, although I haven't got a clue on how it should be done.

i just picked up my first ferrari (86 tr). words can't describe the driving experience, it may not be the fastest or best handling car on the market but its the best package for me. the color, the sound, the feel, the rush i wouldn't trade it for the world. it won't be my last f car!

Re: 348 rental in Ferrari

Sorry for straying off topic again. Here are some pics from my very first Ferrari drive in Maui. I stopped in a supermarket parking lot for photos with the family.

Getting back on topic: Per my earlier post, it was very scary for me because 1) It was my first time DRIVING a Ferrari and 2) The rental company was very clear about who will pay for repairs if the car didn't get returned in the same condition it left. Before I took off, the rental guy went around the car with me and we checked the cosmetics. Turns out, a previous renter scraped the lower bumper and was not detected previously. Lucky for me I saw it or I would have been out of a lot of money for damage I didn't cause.

Once I got underway, my concern was not to attract too much attention, not get a ticket, and most of all, not to break anything. I managed to do it and it was an awesome experience.

Don't know if this can be done, but I do have a short Quicktime clip I spliced together of my time cruising in the 348. Anyone know if this clip can be posted here on the chat?Ferrari 348 rental in MauiFerrari 348 from the Aloha stateMore of the 348 spyder

Ive always appreciated the feeling I get when I get into either my 308 or 348. I hope the butterflies never go away. That is what makes it special. Of course it is always a bit nerve racking at first, but as everyone else says you settle down the more you drive.

On top of this, the first 348 I bought was such a piece of that it didnt make the drive home (alternator was shot) and I wasnt able to drive it for more than two weeks without having major issues. I only kept for a few months until realizing the mistake I made. Sold it to a wholesaler becasue i didnt want to screw some other poor soul.

If you buy from a respectable source, who will give youa 3 month warrantee and they are near your house, the only thing you have to fear is fear itself, cops and the schmucks who feel the need to tailgate you.

Cheers & congrats.

Nice thread...

I picked up my 360M at the factory (they make a ceremony out of it which makes you feel great) and was nervous even driving it through the famous arched factory entrance. But once I got it on the road to Modena and then the highway north, the jitters had disappeared and I was actually enjoying it. It was June 2000 and the 360 was then a rare sight and the looks I got all the way to London, not to mention cars in front getting out of the way double-quick and small crowds gathering at petrol stations and towns and hotels, made it a fun trip. A policeman stopped traffic at an intersection in Chambery (French Alps) to let me through, and the hotel valet in Paris got ride of a parked Porsche 911 to have the 360 right in front of the entrance!

I have driven the 328 and 348 before and the 360 was much less twitchy and a more comfortable driving experience right away; so any lack of familiarity and nervousness disappeared soon. It felt especially secure and stable on the twisting mountain roads, gives you plenty of feedback, and even on the track it is relatively composed while driving hard. I love it!

Can't wait to drive the car back down to Italy next month - in so many ways that is the most wonderful place to drive it with the types of roads and relatively healthy attitudes you get from other drivers and the police...

David S, it's always nice to see pictures of an F-car (rental or not).

I haven't got any experiences of owning, let alone riding along, a Ferrari so I haven't got the slightest idea what it's like.
Although I do think that I would be scared as hell that it should break down orso.
Hopefully I get to feel that some day (probably in a year or 10 or more)

Was I scared, you bet. It was a 355 F1, I drove it home from Ferrari of San Francisco to Los Altos in the far right lane, about 50 mph, in automatic mode, nervous as a cat the whole way.

RE: 348 on Maui

I rented a 348 Spyder on Maui in July 2001. It does exist!!

I believe the place was called Island Riders, (or Hawaiian Riders), I don't remember exactly. There were TWO Spyders for rent!! One red and one black. They gave me the black one (saying the red one needed some mechanical work). My car had 85K miles on it and was a 94 black/tan. If anyone is interested, I can upload pics of the car.

Yes, it was exorbitant but, since it was my first time behind the wheel in a Ferrari, it was worth every penny!!

I rented it for 6 hours and was limited to 75 miles. You are not permitted to drive on the "Road to Hana" but that's OK because you CAN'T drive fast on that road or you will end up going over the edge of the cliffs or waterfalls. I ended up putting 107 miles on it and drove along the coast line with my dad. BTW, I got 25 mpg somehow. The A/C was useless, the top was a nightmare to put up and down but the car was wonderful to drive. It was almost effortless to bring it up to speed. 80mph felt like 30.

PLEASE NOTE: Beware, on Maui speed limits are LOW!!! You will get nailed (if you don't pay attention) by the local officers because they know all about the local Ferrari/Viper rentals and are just waiting for you to zoom by their radar gun. I JUST missed a ticket by being lucky. I did 65 passed an officer who was hiding on an adjacent side street. He zoomed up behind me. Lucky for me, I saw him in time to haul it down to the posted 40mph. He stayed glued to my bumper for 5 minutes and I didn't give him any opportunity to pull me over. I got off the road to see if he would follow but he kept going. It was a close call!

Note: Magnum PI was filmed on Oahu, on the eastern part of the Island. Speed limits are low there too.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Lucky for me I had a video camera to document and savor the moment.

Jeff, I am still in that zone with my first F only 5 months ago. But like someone else said here, I keep telling myself, you have to live a little, lifes short and so what if it goes pear shaped, fix it and move on, at least you had/have it.

I also worry about not having any contacts yet for work, I dont know a good mechanic (I will do many of the jobs that may crop up myself), I have never experienced a good body shop, don't know where to get F parts at reasonable prices locally etc etc but it will come with time I'm sure.

I wish I was stateside as you guys seem to have a wealth of specialist business.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for helping me through this "remorse" period. I guess my remorse is only "potential" and not actual as the TR runs and drives great. It's when something may go wrong that scares me. I have had some unusual cars in my time, my last one being a ZR-1 vette. That car had a terrible identity crisis, looking so similar to the standard model. It was pretty strong at 387 rwhp. But nobody knew how to work on it, so I did it myself. And parts for that engine were expensive. But with a Ferrari I can't buzz down to Autozone for parts, can't call any of my buddies for mechanical advice. I will be an italian island in an ocean of domestics. I've been studying the shop and parts manuals. The more I know the better I feel. And with all of you as my second "family" I think I will be okay. Jeff Green

Hans, I saw the 348 rental this past July in Maui. It does exist! The rental place is in Lahaina, 1 block off the main drag. Not cheap...and there is no place to go fast on Maui.

Tom,
Yeah the guy did kinda get a chuckle. He said to relax, and that it is common for people to have anxiety after obtaining something they think they really don't need.

Hans,
No I didn't drive it from Hawaii. They had the car stored in Northern California and I live in Southern California, so I flew up with my brother and drove it back down. Now that I think of it the drive was more like 500 miles. I think the Island that they are on is Lanai?

Jeff Congrats - starting off with a TR ! WOW !

I'm nervous when I buy any new car. The more you drive it, the more at ease you will become. If you feel the same buyers remorse as others have posted, just pull the car out of the driveway, stand back and look at it all over, smile, then drive and grin. Goodbye buyers remorse.

Enjoy and drive it in good health.

Was this the car that was on Maui? I've heard many comment on fun times they had in a 348 rental there. I was hoping to rent it myself on my next trip.

Jeff

First of all congrats on entering the world of Ferrari ownership.

As far as getting scared, you bet your butt I was scared. Talk about buyers remorse, on the drive home, about 600 miles, I called the guy that sold me my 348 and practically begged him to take the car back. Over a year later now I'm so glad that he wouldn't and that I have it.

My car was a rental from Hawaii, and you guessed it, this thing got the crap beat out of it. I'm so glad that they sold it to me cause they aren't the kind of people that should own this type of vehical. As my mechanic said after checking it out for the first time "It was ridden hard and put away wet". After surviving the harsh life on the streets as a rental, I have concluded that my Ferrari is one hardcore 348. Now that it is in the proper hands, mine, over time the car will get to where it should be.

These cars do cost money to own and keep up, but in the end they are so worth it. Enjoy your Redhead but don't treat it like a stepchild, hahaha. After a year you can look back and find that you are so happy you have the car.

I was scared too when I got my 98 550 last year and then put $11K into it the first week. I had the car for like 2 days and then it was in the shop for about a week. New clutch, 15K service, Tubi exaust, 2 rear tires and replaced a few hoses.

Looking back on it now I made the big mistake of buying first and doing a thorough inspection afterwards.

im getting my first f car on monday, 91 348ts, after months of inspection and negotiation, i wanted to make sure i got a good deal on a relativly trouble free car the first time around, i should have done this years ago, it was either a new work truck (that would have looked just like the old one in 6 months) or a toy, ive always wanted a ferrari, you only go around once, its toy time, the suspence in building!

i was nervous too, and thought it was going to fall apart and cost me a bundle. it didn't (well not the first fe months anyway haha). after a while though you get used to the buzz and just start wanting to drive it farther, harder, faster etc. but i think the nerves in the begining are actually healthy since you are extra careful while you 'learn' the car, and thereby preserve it for when you are ready to push it more.
remember to have fun though; smile when you drive and look around at all the people who wish they were you..........

It's like wanting the prettiest girl in high school that every other guy wants also. You dream of her and one day it happens, somehow now she's your girlfriend. Gee this is great but what do I do now. So you worry on how to keep her. My suggestion, Enjoy her, the car, as long as it lasts.

It's my first sports car so I was very taken back. The jeep is cool and all, but just a little different. I've driven some pretty cool cars of my friends over the years, but nothing like having your own. It's been two years now, but there is no way I'll ever forget it being dropped off at my house. I was standing in the driveway and I heard it like 1/2 a mile away and was like what the hell is that, then it kept getting closer and closer until it pulled in the driveway. The first weekend I didn't have any plates yet so I just would start it up, drive it around in the driveway, wash it, sit in it for hours listening to the radio, etc. It was just so cool. Now that I haven't had it on the road in a year I hope I get the same feeling when I finally have it running again. I've been lucky enough to work on countless Fcars with my new job, but still nothing like being around your own car. I just love it. I've been through some tough times with it, felt like rolling it into the Hudson, etc but when push comes to shove I could never part with it. Well, maybe for an F50.

I bought my 328 just over a week ago. I've been running the range between "Oh wow, that's MINE!" to "Oh no, what did I do?"

I'm sure the wave will flatten a bit as time goes on, but it's sure a ride right now. Sometimes I wonder why I spent so much (for me) on an old toy, and other times I think it's the second greatest move I've ever made.

But, I finally have the car that I've wanted since I was in high school. Even though nobody else seems to understand, that's a big deal to me.

All in all, I'm glad I did it. Now I'm just wondering what the 12 cylinder cars are like :-)

Last year, I came THIS close to getting my first F-car (308GTSi)! I have been saving up for 20 years. There were 2 local cars for sale (at different dealers and times) that I went to check out and was about to purchase. I made 2 separate deals and both fell through for different reasons and that, in itself was a nervewracking experience.

The first one, a QV, fell through when I didn't like what the mechanic (doing the PPI) had to say. Too much money to fix what was wrong and the dealer wouldn't budge 1 dollar on the price. The dealer said HIS mechanic could fix everything for under $2K. The PPI guy said $8-$10K. Never having owned a 308 (yet) I couldn't do the deal due to the uncertainty of how much it was really going to cost. Guess I wasn't the only one because that 308 remained unsold for another 4 months after I saw it.

The second was a an '82 injected GTS. That car was in great shape but the dealer wanted $5k more than the *book* value. I was very upset that he wouldn't budge on the price but the car was clean. I signed the paperwork (stupid move) before I ran a CarFax to ease my mind. Turns out there was an odometer rollback issue on it years ago. The dealer didn't have any way of disputing this with the DMV (even though it sure looked like a DMV error). I canceled really quick with no harm done! No way I would take on that problem.

Anyway, each of those deals made me a little bit nuts with fear that I might be buying someone's moneypit (not finding out until too late). In hindsight, it was the right move to back away despite my longtime dream of F-car ownership. I don't think I would have been able to sleep knowing that I could have been ripped off with either of those deals.

By the way, I ended up with an '02 silver Acura RSX as my daily commuter. VERY PLEASED!! If you squint, it vaguely resembles a 360 modena. It has good (not great) power with the 5 speed and I'm getting 28mpg!! My 308 will wait a little longer but for now, the RSX will keep me happy and sleeping easy.

Never forget that Ferrari's were meant to be used!
Letting them sit scares me.
A friend of mine was the factory mechanic that Enzo Ferrari sent to the US with Luigi Chinetti.
Pedro Rodriguez pulled into the pits at LeMans and said that the car was overheating. My friend put a screw driver through the water temp gauge and replied "Now its not." Rodriguez got back in and finished the race. These cars are very strong and they've finished many a race. I drove my TR for over 130,000 miles in the rain and snow and it rarely let me down.

The day I bought it I thought to myself " what the hell did I just do." My Mom saw me and asked what was wrong with me, that I had just bought a Ferrari and looked like I was going to a funeral. That was then, now 2 years later I LOVE the car and after working a few small things out it has been very reliable. I drive it everywhere now.

Damn straight I was nervous. Considering that the first house we bought was $50,000 and I couldn't sleep for weeks sweating that purchase (on a salary of $19,000). And you don't drive a house at 50-150 mph -with all of the attendant risks! Plus the damn car cost 5 times what that house cost- how can you justify such a thing???

Well, you can't, really. But for me, the F-car is a movable piece of art and hence, an irrational act, based upon my appreciation of the object.

I still haven't fully relaxed driving the car and Ive owned it for over a year now. But I am enjoying it more and learning to ignore the funny noises it sometimes makes.

So nervousness is just part of the first flush of ownership-this too shall pass and you'll be left with the thrill of experiencing in the most visceral way a piece of art.

I wasn't scared but I was super concentrated trying to memorize every noise and sensation just to make sure nothing was wrong with my TR. The previous owner of the car followed me home on my Suburban from the bank, and he was amazed that I was so concentrated on the car, that I failed to notice the beamer next to me with 4 girls trying to make contact. That was a bummer, oh well, my TR deserved all my attention that day anyway.

You guys are giving me the warm fuzzies! Really though, it is nice to know that I may be somewhat normal in feeling this way. And I see from this terrific forum that help is just a few key strokes away. This site is very impressive! The amount of activity amazes me, something is always abuzz. I'm sure I did the right thing in chasing my dream. Thanks Everyone! Jeff

Scared to death. I kept asking the mechanic that did the PPI if it would make the 350 mile trip back home. Cell phone carefully charged. All the way home, I just kept shaking. Wait, what's that noise? (If you start worrying about noises, you'll NEVER sleep. There isn't a noise these things *don't* make.) Got it home just fine, but all night I continued shaking, heart beating a million beats/minute, while I was just laying there thinking over and over "WHAT DID I DO??" What if it breaks? Will I have to pull the kids out of college and go on food stamps?

Drove it for weeks as if it were made out of glass. Never ventured very far from home. Pulled over to the side of the road a couple of times, as I thought it was catching on fire. (Turned out to be a drop or two of diff grease being flung off of a leaky axle seal - not serious at all, just caused a slight burnt smell.) Started buying fire extinguishers.

Fast forward: Stupid thing is a reliable as a brick. Yeah, it has a few goofs, a leak here, electrical gremlin there, but probably better than most cars of the period (1975). I drive it about 1000 miles per month. Fill the tank, change the oil, and go.

Congrats on the purchase. I too was a bit scared a few months ago when I bought our 89 328. I still am very nervous about caring for it and driving it but...I love it! It signifies how special it is to own one of these cars. Always be a little nervous and scared, not to the point of not enjoying it. You will relax a little later if you are like me. It is a big step to take. You will not regret the decision if Ferrari is a passion for you. If it becomes more hassle then fun, or too much stress than fun, then you will know to sell the car. Congrats again. Welcome, Glen

Jeff, when I bought my car, I drove it 1000 miles home...listening to every sound as if it was going to fall apart. It never did, and it turned out to be a terrific car, which I still drive very often! Congrats on your TR, that is a heck of a great car! Drive it as much as you can!

I would say I was nervous, when I was driving it home I kept telling myself I did it and I'm happy.

19 years ago I got my first ferrari. For the first month it was buyers remorse. Then it was listening to every sound and panic. Then after a year I settled down. I have since owned 9 Fcars and currently own 4 and couldnt be happier.

Jeff,
Congrats on the purchase.
Please post car pic asap.
Personally, I don't think a F had ever been a mistake purchase. I accept all its idiosyncracies. The happiness in owning such a fine artistic machinery leaves me in awe all the time.

Hey Everyone. I have just got my dreamcar, a Testarossa. I'm just a regular guy with a factory job, and have worked hard to obtain this car. I've been reading through the service manual, and have to put it down at times because I get nervous just reading it. I think of all the possible things that can go wrong with this system or that. It is intimidating to say the least. But I figure I only live once, and if this car ends up being a mistake, at least I took the plunge. QUESTION: HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN GETTING YOUR FIRST FERRARI? WERE YOU HAPPY AND A LITTLE SCARED AT THE SAME TIME?
