Call Richard Merrit at the DOT in Washington, D.C.. The paperwork for any gray market car coming into the U.S.A. goes across his desk. |

another question on this car....i plan to buy one in europe and eventually take it to the states. the law says any car 25 years old or older can be brought in without extra dot or epa bs. did it this year w/ a '77 930. but are the rules any different because this car was never officially imported? and where might be a good place to get the scoop on this kind of info? |

I don't think there are many differences in the 81-84 BBi cars. Not with the major components to my knowledge. The Original Factory Parts manuel covers the series. I've worked on quite a few, because they were all gray market cars. The biggest differences I'm aware of was "who" did the conversions to US legal. Some were really nice, some atrocious. Many of the ones I've seen have been somewhat converted back to original to one degree or another. To the best of my knowledge..the cars came 2 tone (which is why it's called boxer trim in most circles) with 'the option' in '84' to have a solid paint scheme. By '84' the boxer had gained enough popularity in the US that Dealers where selling them even though they were still gray market, which is why one could specify the paint color and scheme along with interior color scheme, such as a tan dash instead of standard issue black. One difference just came to mind, the way the glove box was opened, early BBi's had the push lever, later cars the electic button operated opener. Maybe the '83-84's had the front fog lights standard that '81's' didn't have? Hard to remember such small details...lol. A weakness all the series had was the Digiplex and the distributor advance mechanisms going bad, as well as clutch slave cylnders leaking often because of frying being so close to the exhaust. They take expertise to tune the two sides exactly the same, but all in all awesome machines for their day. Faster than a stock 930 turbo of the same vintage and smooth as glass. When running the cars through their paces I always felt as if I was being pushed by a turbine engine. Neat feeling. |

as with all ferraris the models take a few years to get sorted out so even though they are essentially the same from 81 to 84 they have small refinements. If I were you I would go for an 83 or 84. 84's tend to carry a slight prem but 81 thru 83 pricing is fairly consistent. I think but am not certain that in 84 the body was all one color where in previous years you had an option for the black lower half. Someone recently said this was not true but I am not convinced |

am compiling a database of all the info and opinions in the archives regarding the 512bb. have more/less decided that when i do get one it will probably be the bbi given the way i intend to use it and my lack of enthusiasm for fiddling w/ carbs. so now the question is, are there any material differences between the bbi's made in 81 and those later on until 84? or were they all the same. |
