Mark, it is interesting -- you are the thrid person in a couple weeks that I talked to that had service records they found out were fake. I wonder how prevalant that is? I just did my 30K and a bit more on my TR (had them rip into the car) and things seemed to match up for the miles on the car. It was a great experience as every major component got sorted out. There were a few things done, however, that a big F-dealer neglected to put on the service records. Why would someone do that?? Not a big deal, but it could have easily been the other way -- on the records and not really done. I had this feeling that they were not always on the up and up and this service proved that.

This raises a question here for me. What do you consider service records and associated history of the car. I got my 77 308 GTB a few years ago from an owner who did not service his own car. So with 31K on the clock I talked to his mech. and got a copy of the 30K service so I felt the car was in good condition which it is. So now that I own it I do all of my own service and keep a record of what I do in a PC file along with all of the receipts. So I consider this to be "service records". Do you folks consider this sufficent ?

From your description, this sounds like a euro spec car as no US cars had carbs in 1980. If there is emission testing in your jurisdiction, this could be a real problem. Also, selling it down the road could be troublesome because more and more areas are requiring testing.
On the other hand, there are many older cars that are just fine even without records. Records were not so important 20 years ago and a lot of people just threw them away. However, as Mark said, a complete inspection with a compression/leakdown test is a must on any older car, records or not.
IMO, even if the car is sound, you will probably need a major service and would want to buy it in the low 20's to compensate.

I bought a car that had 'all the records' ... all fake. I spent over $15k in less than 2 months (new belts, gears, flywheel, clutch, rear wheel bearings, valve shims, oil seal job, etc etc). IMO a VERY thourough inspection is worth more than papers;

Tony -- where are you located? IMO, no service records is not a problem if the seller is willing to deduct a significant amount of the major service cost so that you can get it done yourself -- assuming no major gotchas from the pre-purchase inspection (good leakdown/compression, no serious hidden accident damage, etc.). More like $3K~$5K here in the US for the major service though. If it's a Standard (Euro) version, as your message implies (and you're in the US), does it have all the proper DOT/EPA paperwork? (As Ric R. has said) if it's a carbed Euro with the single distributor and electronic ignition it's the best of the carbed 308s -- and the 16" wheels are a definite ($2K?) plus if they are the 5-star QV style (but a wash if aftermarket IMO).

I would not by any car without the service records.
If you do, think about euro 10.000 for major service.(this was what I paid for my 328 major service 30.000 km)
The only advise I can give you is, do NOT drive the car without beeing inspected by a professional Ferrari meccanic.
Good luck.

I just saw a 1980 308GTS (carb car). The car looks mint. It has 56,000Km on it (35,000 Miles). The car has many options on it such as deeper nose, rear valance, 16Inch rims. They are asking $27,600 for the car. Esthetically the car looks mint. But he has no service records for the car.

Need advice...
