Consider a LiquidVac, specifically designed for oil changes. See http://www.expensivecar.com/EasyOilChange.htm

I like mine for my 308/QV

I jack up the back from the crossmember, use a long extension and remove the plug without going under the car (the 328 plug points to the side of the car). drain most of the oil, and then slowly lower the jack to get more oil out.

I use a UFI filter with the standpipe inside, so no punching the oil filter. Punching the oil filter increases potential for metal pieces to get into the engine. No?

As far as the washer go, I've never replaced mine - no leaks. Maybe the previous owner replaced it? You guys don't mean the washer has to be replaced each time do you?

My first time changing the oil, my oil drain pan was not large enough to hold 10qts, and boy was it messy. Now I use two and swap it mid drain.

Quench the seal with a torch just like Peter said. I use mine several times by doing this.

You're not going to get all the oil out of it anyway because of the oil cooler. Just leave it level.

You can re-use the washer if you anneal it with a torch (a propane torch is sufficiant). Heat it until cherry red and let cool naturally (don't quench it by blowing air on it, or dipping it in water).

Or, a couple of wraps of teflon tape will work as well (but still use the copper gasket in addition to the tape).

Russ,
I just got done changing the engine and gearbox oil on my 328. I used a jack to raise the rear first, put it on stands, and then do the front. Make sure the car is level, and after it's been run so the oil flows easier. Use a large pan to collect the engine oil; remember it takes 10qts. Then, use a screw driver to punch a hole on the top of the oil filter and go have a beer. After a few hours, my filter was dry, no oil mess. You should be able to pick up a copper washer from your local european mechanic. I did. You should be all set. BTW, when you fill it, use 8qts or so first. Run it for a while then check the level. You may need to add one more quart. I added all 10 quarts and then I had to syphon some out.

Russ,
Do not try to change the oil without the car being level. You will not be able to drain all the old oil out. And you will need a new washer or you will probably have a leak. If you cannot find a copper washer locally, you will be able to find a Teflon or Nylon washer. These work really well.

Will be changing engine oil for the first time and have some questions.

I will need to put the fron or back on ramps to get under the car. Will this prevent me from getting all of the oil to drain out.
Should I put the front or the back up on ramps?
Will I have to replace the washer that is on the drain plug. I recall a thread where that was advised.
