Damn Porsche bastards (not you because you're considering a Ferrari, so I already love you). The Ferrari is much more of a driver's car. You feel the road and you know it means business. Like was said already, when you account the next to nothing depreciation and the usually cheap insurance, they will pretty much be equal in maintenance cost. Plus, owning a Ferrari is like entering a brotherhood, the owners are so much cooler. It's like a disease, once you get a Ferrari you will always be owning one or planning on owning one. Wow, this shouldn't even be a question, go for the Ferrari. The Germans are so cold when it comes to cars, the Italians really heat it up. |

I think the question is more 328 vs 348. I drove a Boxter in Germany for one week and must say I was utterly disgusted with that car. Really bad performance. Nice looks but the rest... I think you are best of buying a Ferrari now and see where you are in 1-2 years. You can always sell. A well kept car is easy to sell. You were giving prices in CND$. Yet you were comparing two different cars 328GTS is a targa and the 348 Spider is the convertible. Try to look for a 348TS. Targa. These ýou should be able to find between $50 - $60K. US They are priced almost equal with the 328. You get great AC, great handling and as for my car...no maintenance. The ever 15K Mls maintenance is $ 3500 US, true, but that is about it. The oil change can be done by any mechanic or at home for the price of quality oil and a new filter. $50 - $ 100 ! |

Don't forget: depreciation is a cost of ownership. The Boxter is likely to depreciate much faster than the Ferrari. Insurance might be less on the Ferrari too. Mike |

Welcome! I Sold my '99 Boxster earlier this year and bought an '85 308 QV (couldn't afford to keep both). Two completely different cars - no question about it. They are so different, each having many positives and negatives, that comparing them would take forever (and even if you did, in the end neither would come out a clear "winner"). I too fulfilled a life time dream by buying the Ferrari. I've had 3 Porsches and I loved them all, but there just ain't no subsitute to owning a Ferrari. I haven't looked back since making the change and as much as I know I'll upgrade to a 355 someday, I'll also own another Porsche. Go for it, sell the Box and buy the "best" Ferrari you can afford. Enjoy the experience...there's nothing like it! BTW...if you're concerned about the costs of maintenance, you looking at the wrong cars....just my opinion |

The main issue I see about maintenance is one has a warranty and the other doesn't. So the best way to compare maintenance and costs is to do a ratio of the costs of maintenance versus purchase price. For 3 years the Boxer is zero. The maintenance of the Ferrari could easily be 15 - 20% the value of the car -- call that the "I got the have a ferrari monetary factor" - if you can live with that number then its a matter of which car you want to own now. Your choice is not that limited. If you can live with the "I got to have a Ferrari monetary factor" then go for the best of both. You already know the boxer, buy the ferrari (328 or 348) try it for two years. Then go back to the new boxer in 2003 if you like. And if you like the Ferrari upgrade to the 355. I do not see a dilemma i actually see the opportunity to experience both cars. Enjoy whatever you get and welcome to the site. |

Hello all, this is my first post here. I currently do not own a Ferrari, but have lusted and dreamed of owing one all my life. I now have a MY1999 boxster which I enjoy very much, but, alas, it is not a Ferrari. My question (dilemma) is this: I plan on upgrading to a Box S next year or perhaps the new 290HP box that is rumored for 2003. On the other hand, I have found that up here in Canada, one can get a very nice 94/95 348 spyder for approx. 140K (Cdn$) and a nice 328 for about $80 ('89 or thereabouts). Should I keep my current box and get a 328 OR give up the box (which I do like very much) and get a 348 OR keep the Box (and maybe upgrade to an S) and wait until I can afford a newer ferrari (355 perhaps?). Also, I hear the maintenance costs on a Ferrari run about $400 for an oil change (no big deal) and start at $5,000 for the 15-20 thousand kilometre servicing! (all $ and distances in CDN!). What are your experiences with maintenance vs. age/model of car? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, Mikester Cannuck |
