Why would anyone spend that much to repair a 77 308? Why didn't Haggerty just consider it a total loss and write a check for the value of the car (mid 20's to low 30's if concourse?)? It must have been quite a sell job you did on them to get $44k for the repairs!!

Thanks to Hagerty Insurance, the fire damage was paid for. But the original estimate was $26,000.00, and final bill was $44,000.00. Needless to say, there was some fighting going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At one point I didn't think I would ever get the car back.

Ferrari could GIVE the cars away and just sit back and make it up in service.

I'd of parted it out after the fire or bought another and used it for spare parts.44k. Wow. I know it's easy to get there. If you drive car and I mean every year about 3000 miles it will work out to about 1.00 per mile this includes all cosmetics, repaints, interiors, maintenances etc, etc.
Not for the faint of heart.

my 78 gtb has $62,000.00 in receipts since day 1. Car has 74k miles on it. My 82 400 has 14000.00 since 1985.I dont have the receipts from 80-85 but dont think they would be much judging from all parts being original. Both have every dealer service stamp in the service book by Ferrari dealer. That help add cost. But that also makes cars well maintained. Also shows how much cheaper front engine 12 is compared to mid engine v-8 to operate.

In the Ferrari's defense, 90% of the costs are my own quest for performance and really can't be blamed on it. It would have been relatively inexpensive to maintain had I not gotten wrapped up in all this.

I have it all on an Excel spreadsheet. 90% of all service is preventive maintenance, but man it ain't cheap! Probably around $25K in servicing for a 1986 328GTS.

Mike,

Was the foreign object a loose nut he forgot to tighten? Did he change the belts? If so, the manufacturer of the belt should have coughed up some doe.

Mechanic claimed some foreign object got into the belt. I'll give him 50/50 on this. Could have been. But, needless to say I have found a new shop to do my work. Considering how much money I spent at this dealership in the past, I think they should have tried to work out something both of us could be happy with.

My expenses are about $4700 since I bought the 1987 328. I bought it in 1988. I'm not counting tire and oil changes.

Major Service 3000 (in 1994)
Oil cooler 350
Valve shims 50
Brake pads 400
Second major service 350 (done myself)
Water pump 200
Batteries 150
Fog lamp bulb 5
Rear deck struts 120

Car has over 21K on it. So it is probably more like 5000 since I probably forgot about something. I have had little trouble with it.

Actually, maybe I've just been very lucky, or
I was able to maintain my car really well, in either case, I only spent ~1000$ in parts (doing my own labor on routine maintenance jobs) for filters, gaskets, tools etc. on my 348 in 4 years of ownership. I did rebuild the alternator twice so far, and did two valve adjustments (second time actually check only, all valves were within spec). who said 348s are unreliable POS's?

My guess: 2X Purchase $ to operate for 10 years.
200K to 1000K to restore.

I like to think I'm a fairly sensible person, so I don't want to add up my receipts, as doing so would only confirm what a truly ridiculous hobbie owning an older Ferrari is!! (Denial can sometimes be a GOOD thing!) :-)

My 308GT4 came with receipts for about $5K worth of stuff in the 2 years previous to me buying it. Just little stuff - brake hoses, fuel lines, etc., etc., etc., etc.

And this is on a car with only 14K miles!

Adds up.

I got a 3 hole binder for mine a couple months ago because the manila folder was getting ridiculously large, I also added them up, a frightening outcome to say the least.

I have a separate checking account that I use for a small business I have. I pay for Ferrari repairs out of that, so my wife never knows. I don't want to know either.

I don't need to add them up. My wife always reminds me how much we spend on that "money pit".

This question would give me heart failure if I added everything up. I'll guess I've spent $8k in the last year on the Europa. It's in nice shape now!!

I use a program called 'Car Care' into which you enter any monies spent on the car including fuel, mechanical repairs, insurance costs, parts purchases, registration fees, etc. It will give you a grand total and/or generate varying reports if you wish. Great program, but I rarely ask it to generate a 'total cost of operating' report!

I just did the numbers on my 87 Mondial 3.2 which I have owned since Feb 2001, all costs are in Australian dollars (approx double USD, ie: AUS$2=US$1).

For detailed info see My Service History on my Mondial website http://fly.to/mondial

Just curious with those that have records added up the totals
My 86 328 has over $41,000 in reciepts and records from the 3 previous owners, at 36k it had the rod berings replaced with other misc repairs also which totaled $4500 alone, must have run out of oil or some other failure
