Racer: Words and actions are two VERY different things.

James: I like your scholarship idea. I'm a BIG believer in education, especially for those who are missing out. NOTHING, over time, provides higher returns than education. I think it would be very interesting to setup a scholarship.

Giving time and evergy to a cause you believe in hsa to be one of the most rewarding experiences one can.

YES! Giving back is great! Give me your Ferrari's and you'll have a much more satisfied life! Please everybody! Give me your pink slips!

:D

Seriously though, telling somebody you care for them is just as good as giving to a charity. Just MHO.

I am 26 and I really just had one focus and that was to get as far as I could in the short time we have here on earth. Just this year I have been wanting to give back also. I don't have alot, I don't own a Ferrari or live in Beverly Hills. But at 26 I have owned 6 Corvettes and I have just started a business that I hope will go somewhere. I just think I am pretty lucky even if I earned this all myself. I started giving things to people I know that need it and now I think that I am going to focus on scholarships. I know I am not helping a sick kid here like some of you but I don't think I will ever give anything to the big charities. I donated to the Red Cross right after Sept 11th to just find out that they gave the money to something other than the victims of the world trade center. So this way I can give it directly to the person who needs the help. Now I would love to go to design school. Most of you have seen some of my work on here and maybe one day I will make it. I just think that everyone who wants to go to school should be able to. I am going to set up scholarships that maybe only a few thousand dollars, or whatever I can come up with to give, but I think this way by educating younger people I can make this world a better place. I am glad to see so many people on here that are willing to give back, and for that you should all be congratulated.

Have to agree with Martin and Whart on this one. The most valuable thing you can give is your time. Volunteer your time and energy.

agree with the good Dr. on this one. I periodically go to city high schools in Ny on Law Day to talk about careers. Despite sometimes appalling conditions, and the usual ennui of kids that age, i usually feel great, and troubled, at the same time after doing one of these things, and hope i can inspire one person...We do the charity thing viz dinners, events, etc, but honestly, you are usually with others of the same persuasion and its boring...

I'm a regular supporter and part time fund raiser for our local Child Advocates Assoc.
We run 2 cars at each years events with each entry costing 7K-10K. Been doing it five years now. I love the looks on the kids faces of awe and hope. Chilren are the future, if we can inspire them and give them hope, then maybe the future will be bright even after we're long gone.

Writing a check is easy and not as rewarding as giving of ones' self. There are myriads of volunteer jobs-guardian ad litum for abused kids,
vol ombudsman representing old people in long term care facilities-make a wish- mentors-etc.Every community is reaching out for volunteers.
Get involved.

Todd, I feel just like yourself and started actively donating to the Ronald McDonald house (a home away from for critically ill children and family) -- "NOW GET THIS" - last year I make my donation and feel pretty good about giving back, later that week I read in the paper where the Ronald McDonald house donates $250,000 to the Afro-American College Fund!!!!!! Now don't get me wrong I believe that a great education for our children is of the utmost importance - but if they have enough money to donate to "specialized" funds totally un-related to their purpose - they don't need my money any longer, nor will they get it!!

Here is the "true" story of how I started donating the RMH - what a shame about their current values!

It was Christmas Eve about 5:30, I was shutting things down when I noticed a family in the front part of the store. I informed them that we were closing and ask if there anything that they needed. I was told that they were from out of town and needed to make a phone call - no problem - while the father was on the phone the mother informed me that their 3 year old son was critically ill and would probably not live through Christmas! The Ronald McDonald House had brought them here and gave them a place to stay for his last days!! I asked their two daughters what they would like for Christmas - the response - "My Baby Brother to LIVE" -- OUCH!! What do you say to thay? Anyhow, since that day I have donated to the RMH and feel betrayed having learned of the way "they -RMH" donate to other charities! I know this is a tough one but, do you guys think one should donate to organizations that participate in donating outside from their own purpose? This story still upsets me every Christmas - I do not know what happened - I think it best!

The Florida Region of the FCA has supported the Make a Wish Foundation. At our last event we had some kids and their families out for the day to have lunch and take a few laps around the track. This was the second time we have done this. The smiles on these kids faces were priceless!

Yes, Todd you have got it right. Giving is one of the greatest blessings a person can recieve. It is interesting, the more we seem to give, the more we seem to have. I count it a great blessing to be able to share from what has been given to me. Just for the joy of it, this comming Feb. we are taking 240 new wheel chairs down to Costa Rica to give to people who have been without mobility or the means to get it. I am so thankful for this opportunity I know that I will get much more out of the experience than I am giving. But than again, I'm the guy who put a fish license plate holder on my 328 and I got more out of than than I ever intended. I never expected to have the means to give and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to help others. "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Give just for the fun of it. See what happens. You may just find that it is more rewarding than receiving.

The coolest thing I ever participated in that combined 'giving back' with car guy stuff was participating in the local MG club's charity event with the D.C. area support group for blind children. Each of us was paired up with a sight-impaired navigator between about 7 to 14 years old. An MG club person set a rally route and the support group people typed the rally instructions into little braille booklets. So it ended up being the drivers who were truly 'blind' because we had no clue what the instructions said - the kids were totally empowered giving the instructions and loved riding around in the MGs. My navigator kept urging me to take the corners faster because he got such a rush out of it. It's a lot of prep work for the club people, but the results are very satisfying.

Todd, I'd be happy to GIVE you one of my bank deposit slips! :-) :-)

Actually, we're pretty big givers to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

No, this is not about big butts...;)

Often tines I feel I have been cursed and the whole world is against me, but other times I feel I am very fortunate for many things. And, I want to give back. I want to give back to those who have helped or supported me in my life. I want to help those less fortunate, or maybe someone I don't even know just to spread some "goodness". What do you guys do? I regularly give to charity, but I'm looking for other things. Years ago I saw a guy in a car with a plate the said GIV BACK. I think he has the same idea as I. Anybody like to give just for the sake of it??
