Looking through the archives, it turns out I bought a car that was featured in the following thread:

http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/3487.html

The price was reasonable, and it turns out by doing some research, the 15k service had been performed twice by two different POs.

OK. While we are on the subject of differences in 328s, I have one more.

The roof spoiler on the GTB is smooth while the one on the GTS is textured.

thanks for the update, Mark C. 83,xxx is higher than i would have thought, as i thought they ended production of the 328s during summer '89. I know they were up to 81,xxx by May '89, and since they take August off for vacation, this seems like a lot of cars to finish up in 2-3 months...i may have bad info, tho...

Nice car Peter. It's always good to see other non-traditional color combinations on this series.

Like many people, red/tan was my preferred color of choice, but the Grigio/red combo really grew on me. I get alot of compliments at regional meets as it stands out from the crowd.

Thanks Jim. The Silver is really a Fantastic color on this car. The paint shows every curve and angle on the design as the paint changes color with the angles. I'll get some pictures and post them soon. I guess it is a small Ferrari world, with only 6000 GTS models out there. Glad you waited but I would jump on the next one that comes along if it's nice. It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Washing it in the driveway is like rubbing down a Victoria's Secret model with a soapy sponge. Can you see the grin on my face?

Yes, that's the one. I lived in KC before moving down here 6 years ago and knew and had driven the car while I lived there. Much better weather for this sort of thing here in Florida. Haven't put the top on since I got it. Wheee! I've been checking this board for information for some time and it's great to have a resource like this. Also joined the FOC and Florida Region. Haven't heard from them yet. Any other owners in the Tampa Bay area? Any events coming up?

Jim, somehow I'll incorporate Dave's info.... formatting here is the tough part. When I add to the list below, I'll post it in the 328 area of the SHOWROOM section as well as here. That way, we'll always know where to find it.

Hey Lou, I note in your profile you also have a 512 TR and 360 Spider. You mentioned "60000 great miles" on the 328... sounds like there's some sentimental value there. How do you compare the 328 to your other F-cars?

Guys,
Here are some of the major updates according to parts manual:
Door design (inside handles moved, etc.) #71597. Further inside door changes plus horse on mirror (US cars) #75929.
valves # 71381
valve seats #76666
oil cooler #75272 (plus associated parts)
Major changes at 76626 (88.5 cars)include all suspension parts (forks, shocks, sway bars, etc.) brakes, steering rack and wheels which have more offset than before. BTW these wheels are not the same as Mondials in width and offset. Also the front bonnet was changed eliminating the hood bending button strut.
ABS does not give a beginning number.
The air box and inlet tube was changed 78069 which I believe coincides with 89 model year in US.
With ABS came another front bonnet and changes under it.
Front and rear shocks were changed again at #78613.
The seats and adjustment mechanisms were completely changed at sometime (no vin# given)
There are numerous other changes throughout production, but these are the biggies.

VS1, Your friends car is interesting. Everything you stated would make this car an 88.5 or 89 except for the concave wheels. Maybe Ferrari didnt make all these changes at once.

Mine is a very early 88 (Oct 1987 prod, SN 75063) with hood strut on left, no gasket around door handle, and concave wheels, ie a standard pre- 88.5 328.

BTW, the wheel change occured to accomidate new susp and brakes.

BobD, Carl - let me throw this into the mix. The 328 badge on mine isn't silver and white - it's a silvery-goldtone with white. My friend's early '88 is black/white. Wonder if it has anything to do with the color of the car???

Hi Bob,

That's my understanding also - the suspension changes occurred concurrently.
(and I - like you - prefer the earlier wheels but bought a car with the later convex! Your 89 is beautiful BTW. Is your "328 GTS" emblem black/silver or black/white?)

Carl, I thought I heard the convex wheels were required for the suspension upgrades made in later 328s... '88.5 on. Who knows??? Sometimes I think it's because they ran out of concave wheels in the parts bin and had an abundance of convex wheels left over due to slower than expected Mondial sales. :-)

I've mentioned this before.... personally, I like the older concave wheels much better.... gives the 328 a more agressive look IMO.

Jeff, just curious, what's the production date on your car?

BobD - My early production '87 has the 'hidden interior door handles', lock on strut rod and it's on the left side, the trumpet. My buddy's early '88 production has the interior door handles on the arm rest, black trim around the exterior door handles, no lock on strut rod [and it's on the right side], I didn't check about the trumpet. Concave wheels on both. I believe the door handles changed sometime in '87 not sure about the trim or prop strut.

Omar, check the differences in the wheels in BobD's car and my car. The pics are in our profiles. The later cars have a 'convex' design and the center of the wheel appears to be 'pushed out'. The earlier cars are 'concave' and the centers are 'pushed in'. Hope this helps!

Hi Omar,

The late-88 and all 1989 cars have a "convex" style wheel design which is distinctly different from the 1986-early 88 "concave" style. To best of my knowledge sizes are identical (F16x7,R16x8). As I recall the service bulletin states this was done to standardize production with the Mondial.
Check the FNA website under "marketplace" look at the early versus later 328s.

Thx Craig. It's interesting to see when our listing's first car was produced.

Peter, I guess I do recall that conversation. US cars have the production date in the drivers door jam.

Dave, you mentioned "asymetrical steering wheel" on your '89.... my '89 does not have this.

Jeff (Ryerson), I see you corrected your VIN below... your car seems to fit into the '87 VIN range although you mention it's an '86. Is your 328 a Euro car?

Hi Bob. I'm still here.

Not so much F-chat because of I've had a lot of other stuff to do the last months.

I remember correctly I didn't know how to check production date the last time this issue was up. I think I was asked to check a sign on the inside when the door is open. I did but those numbers didn't mean anything to me.

The first EEC-registration (som kind of EEC-approval) was 16th of november-88.

Since there is a huge difference in emission regulations from -88 to -89 is Sweden, maybe the first owner insisted that the car should be registred in Sweden as an -88 instead of -89.

Dave, your comment about European model years following calendar years is demonstrated below in the list (bottom). Look at Peter Soderlund's VIN (last '88) vs. mine (1st '89). Peter's car is a Euro '88 but has a VIN greater than my US '89. My '89 was produced in October '88, Peter's was produced shortly after mine, possibly in November '88. Mine is a US '89, however Peter's is a Euro '88.

Peter, if you're still out there, was your car produced in October or November of '88?

I have a parts manual, and many parts were continually updated throughout the production, including some motor parts. I'll try to put these on a spread sheet that I can email to interested parties.
I think the confusion about ABS comes from Europe, where it was optional in late 88. However, in Europe the model years follow the calender years. In the US, model years begin in the fall usually. All US 89 model year 328's have ABS, but many of these (including mine) were manufactured in the fall of 88. No 88 model year cars in the US have ABS. There are some other mostly small cosmetic changes in 89's as well.
The inside door handles were changed late in the 87 model year.
My 89 has an asymetrical steering wheel apparently to increase knee room. I don't know if late 88's had these or not. Someone comment.

Good point about the hood support. I think it also changed sides from L (early) to R (late 88-89). Not sure about the outer door handles on the 1989 cars - car I bought is late 88 and doesn't have any gaskets (someone on here who owns an 89, chime in!) Inner door handles on the car are also the later 89 style.

And of course V is correct ABS is an option on the late 88 cars & standard on all the 1989s. Convex wheels denote suspension changes not necessaily ABS.
Late 1988 according to the service manual valves (exhaust only) were chromed.
Did the early cars use a York (not Nippondenso) A/C compressor?
I'm also interested in the rear emblem change (some were white & others silver)?

Bet with a little work we can come up with a pretty good list here that would be useful to someone looking for a 328 re: sgnificant model year differences.

ABS brakes are generally thought of as a 1989(U.S.) only item, but i think it was an option on the late 1988s, which causes some confusion because you could encounter ABS or non-ABS on a 1988.
I think the ABS trickled out in Euro cars before hitting the U.S., so could be mixed there, too.

Carl, here's a couple more differences:

-The front hoods on early cars (86-87, maybe early 88) had a button release on the prop. To close the front hood, you had to release the button first. Unfortunately, many owners forgot to release the button trying to force the hood down causing creases in the hood. Late cars got rid of the button and used a hydraulic prop.
-'89 cars have black trim around the outside door handles... earlier models didn't. Do '88s have this trim?
-Also, I believe the inside door handles were changed for '89 models only, maybe '88 & '89?

Here's a thought sicne we're on the topic:
Anyone interested in coallating a list of changes/creating a database to the 328 series over the different model years?
(this must be the Corvette guy in me coming out!) I've learned a little bit in my research to the effect of:

The obvious 1989 ABS brakes & dash light (was instrument panel itself unique?)
Late 1988 1/2-89 convex wheels & suspension changes
Two recalls on 1986-7 cars?
Door handles on 1986 unique
I believe the outside mirrors on the later cars have the small emblem
As already mentioned, the horn button (BTW, contact Re-Originals in Houston they have both styles for sale)
Any other thoughts? Topic merit discussion?

Check out Jim's GTS in his profile, the top is painted the color of the car and makes it look like a GTB... it looks great... top off AND top on!

BTW, my '89 has the trumpet above the horn.

My 86 does NOT have the trumpet. My dad's 87 does, until I steal it from him. While I'm at it, I'll take his black and white rear 328 GTS emblems as well since mine are goldish or silverish.

Jimpo1, my 88-1/2(#78366) has the trumpet at the top of the horn ring. I've always assumed this was typical...

My pic is already in my profile. While we're on the 328 topic, I have a question. The other night when I was sitting in Tillmans car, I noticed that his horn button is different from mine. The black ring that goes around the yellow prancing horse badge has a little yellow trumpet at the top of it, engraved into the ring. Mine doesn't have the little trumpet. They are both 87's, so who else has the trumpet?

Todd, sounds like a plan. It would be great if more FCers posted pics in their profiles.

For those of you interested, here's the first thread from March when we started gathering the 328 owner info:
http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/10210.html

Then a few more added in this thread:
http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/16293.html

You'll probably find some more 328 profile pics in the threads listed above.

In a few days, I'll update the list below with current information. Who knows, maybe it will be useful to somebody in the future. In the meantime, it's interesting to check all the stats when it's compiled together like this.

Hey there Bob,
As "keeper" of the 328's, how about we suggest at this time for everyone to post a picture in their profile. I am sure everyone likes to check out their car's brother and sister.

Cool thread Bob

Earlier this year, we put together a listing of all 328 owners on FC (BELOW). We had 24 responses... pretty good!

It just seems like there are a BUNCH of new 328 owners so I thought we should update the list.

If you own a 328 and are NOT on the list below, give us some info including:

Year
Vehicle ID (5 digit)
Color combo (ext/int)
GTB or GTS
Your home city

This is cut and pasted (and edited) from the thread back in March:
