I'm sure the engine is peaking when it appears to hit the "rev limiter"? The car is running strong - I guess my question would be is there anything else that could be causing the tach not to register above 4k other than the tach?? Anybody have any ideas? --

Thanks - Johnny

I accidentally hit 8K once on mine. Did not notice any rev limiter interference.

Not sure if it is related, but I've seen several older 308s where that tach worked OK until 3K-4K or so. Then it would go screwy, sometimes bouncing around aimlessly. In some cases, it was a loose connection and/or usually a ground. Worth checking.

John, I believe my dad's 328's tach does the same thing. Let me know what you find out. And definately you will feel the engine peak well before you can over-rev it, so I doubt you are over-revving. Did you drive the car before the tach went bad?

John,
I believe the 3.2 motors do, indeed, have rev limiters. I haven't double checked with FNA tech, but I found 3 reviews of 328's and 3.2 mondials that mentioned the rev limiter. One went so far as to say it was built into the microplex ecu. I know in my 89, I have hit it a couple of times. Sounds just like my 348 when I hit it. I have overeved QV's and never had this sound. They are not rev limited.
Tachs are a problem area in the 3.2's (about the only one!). I had an 87 5 years ago that kept going screwey. One reviewer mentioned that the tach read 7.5% low. Half speed is the most common symptom. The 89 I currently own reads about 15% low, hits the limiter at an indicated 7K +/-. With the 87, I sent it to Palo Alto twice. As far as I kow, current owner has not had problems. However, I have another recommendation I haven't tried yet but is supposed to be good:
Margaret Lucas@ Mo Ma in Albuquerque 505 766 6661. I plan to send mine there over the winter. Hopefully, it will work the first time.

Dave

Thanks Tom! How about a quick e-mail with the info if its not a problem? [email protected] - The car is running strong but the tach is just not reading correctly. I really appreciate it!

Sounds like you are exceding the rev limit and floating the valves. This can produce broken valve springs or you could have other ignition issues. I have phone numbers and such at work. Will look it up tomorrow .

First, a 328 doesn't have a rev limiter so you better be careful there. My experience has been an internal problem in the tach for the few that I have had repaired. Palo Alto Speedo repair can fix it or there is another place in the NW area of the US I think but can't recall the name of it right off hand.

I have a 1986 328 GTS and the tach does not register over 4K. Everything runs/works fine but the tach appears to be registering 1/2 of what it is suppose to? I have run it up to the rev limiter in 1-3 gears with the same result 4K - can you calibrate the tach or does it need to be replaced?? Any ideas?
