choppers have a terminal forward speed due to the retreating blade on the rotor. as it retreats it has to increase its angle of attack to increase lift to be equal to the opposite forward moving blade. at a certain speed the retreating blade is at full angle of attack and will stall if angle is increased thus the chopper can't go any faster.

Some Italian guy in a kind of Euro Gumball Rally actually out-ran a police helicopter in a Ferrari F355 Spider.... Easily done if the roads are straight and you can keep the car at a comfortable 170mph or so... Perfect car to do it is probably the 550 Maranello. |

I used to out-run Motorola a lot here in rural Oregon. Just go like hell (I was driving late model Corvettes), get off freeway, and HIDE. Did it dozens of times. A couple of times, the car was so 'hot' that I'd hide it for a week or so. Unfortunately, Oregon is now like much of the rest of the country. The highways are so crowded that you can't make a mad high speed dash for that exit. |

The fastest level flight helicopter in regular service was the Huey Cobra, it could do 200 to 220 mph. |

I guess a head-wind might be a problem also.

They need to have someone on the other end. However, 120 mph in a straight line, may be enough to catch 180mph. Art |

Rotor drag of large moving wing equals slow chopper. |

I just never knew how slow a helicopter was. I had always asumed they could do 200mph plus. 120mph was shocking to me. Why are choppers so slow? |

Not only that, but in order to keep you on their sights all the copters need to do is increase altitude. And yes...you can't outrun Motorola. |

Unfortunately that only works in the west -- most roads aren't straight lines. |

Just trying to win topic of the week. Actually... i do have a question about this. Most police and military helicopters only do 120 -140mph ? I have heard on cops and some of those police shows that sometimes the car (P-car) out runs the chopper in a chase. Now if we could just out-run the radio? |
