Carl, Great job on the TR in your profile pic! Question though: Is it a 512TR (because it has the pop-up headlights) or is it a 512M because of the wheels? Years ago I built a variety of scale Ferraris. Unfortunately, my modelling skills never matched my enthusiasm for the projects. Could never get "painting" to go well. Always something went wrong, runs, drips, etc. However, it was still very satisfying to assemble my own Ferrari. I have many memories from building those cars. I learned a lot about the real cars by building the models. In my collection: 1/24 scale: Magnum P.I. 308, 328 GTB and GTS, 348 GTS, testarossa and 288 GTO 1/20 scale: 1990 F1/641 1/12 scale: Lamborghini LP500 (working lights!!) My favorites, 1/8 Pocher testarossa and F-40 Eventually, someday: 1/1 308 GTS QV When I got older, I decided to just buy prebuilt models like Burago, UT, Anson, etc. It's fun to build a collection of zillion dollar exotics and not have to worry about 30K major services!!! |

Stephan, Hasagawa made a beautiful 308GTS/B several years ago, and Fujimi did one that was pretty good. Both can be found on Evilbay starting around $25. Carl |

Welcome to my part of Hell, Scott! I've been building scale models for years, and they get almost as expensive as the 1/1 scale cars. The pic in my profile is a model I built, then retired after winning a number of awards around Texas. I suggest you go to the phone book yellow pages and look for hobby shops in your area. Not Hobby Lobby, but real hobby shops that have the resources you need. Other things you could do are check out scalemotorsport.com for their line of carbon fiber decal sheets, and pick one that looks close to what you want. On the far side, you could cut the whole rear panel out, get some railroad screen (see Real Hobby shop above) and press the screen over the panel to form the challenge grille. You can also find this online at kingshobby.com, one of the best hobby shops, located brick and mortar in Austin, Texas. As for me, I'm working on my 360, putting front challenge grilles on it, but have a long ways to go before it's done, as I usually spend a couple years on each one. Need any more info, send me an email. Carl |

Scott: I forgot to add: I was consumed with a similar project of my Carrera. I made microscopic 'porsche' labels for the brake calipers. Thank goodness I haven't seen a kit for my 308 GTS QV yet ; ) Steve |

Scott: You might try making a sticker for the challenge grille. If your familiar with the lexan R/C cars, you notice that all grills, lights, etc. are simple stickers and they really look realistic. Check out HPIRacing.com for some samples. I would imagine you simply need to find some sort of black dot screen pattern and photocopy it onto a transfer/sticker sheet. This can then be stuck onto your model. Best of luck, and post some pics when your done! |

OK--my wife is going to kill me. I decided that I wanted a scale model to match my first Ferrari. Of course, nobody makes a 360 Pozzi Blue Berlinetta model (and I checked all of the stores in Maranello when visiting the factory this fall). So I bought a Tamiya kit, got some Pozzi Blue paint from my body shop guy, and have worked for 2 weeks getting the perfect custom paint blend to match the tan interior. Of course, I had to buy an airbrush to properly paint the car, which with paint, glue, etc. means I now have about $250 into the project. I just need to figure out how to simulate a rear challenge grill, and I need to change the F1 shifter to a 6 speed. My wife, of course, is concerned that I really need to get a life. Sigh. Anyway, if anyone has a clue on the challenge grill issue, please let me know. |
