I purchased a new 2 1/2 lb Halon 1211 for $110 from Truchoice Motorsports. www.truechoice.com Their phone # is 800 388 8783. Keep in mind that there are special additional shipping charges because it is a gas under pressure (about $35).I also tried the guy in the back of Forza, with no reply. |

I got one of the Halon extinguishers after a track event last year. A Lotus running with us caught fire (fuel leak) at the far end of the track. With no extinguisher on board, the driver and passenger sat for about 3 minutes watching the car burn while we drove extinguishers from the pits to put out the fire. The car, which had been purchased 3 weeks earlier, was totalled, and insurance didn't cover a fire at the track. Ouch! |

I agree, even $100 for an extinguisher is cheap compared to the car (or a life). And you may be able to help someone else out. Have an Uncle in the FDNY who laughed at me for carrying an extinguisher but no 'asbestos' glove (in my pre-Ferrari days). Indicated there was no way to get to the fire if you can't open the hot hood. Wouldn't be as big problem in a 308, but those front engined cars... Halon works by 'suffocating' the fire. Fire needs heat, fuel, and oxygen. Flood the area with an inert gas like halon, no fire. Also probably comes out pretty cold. |

I have one because every time I see a picture of a burned-up car I think - as rare as that is, it likely could have been easily prevented with a $50 extinguisher. I bought, what I think is really cool, a chrome extinguisher, removed all the labels, and put a beautiful Ferrari emblem sticker on it. The yellow and black emblem would look good on a red extinguisher as well. I think it turned out well - almost like what you would expect if Ferrari manufactured it. I'll try to take a picture if anyone's interested. |

I carry a halon extinguisher. A friend of mine sold extinguishers many years ago and said that the halon extingushers are the best. Halon will actually look for the flame to extinguish it. The main reason I carry one, I saw an accident where two people were trapped in their car and burned to death. There can be nothing worse. They would have survived if they had one in their car, handy so they can reach it. I have one in all my cars except the Jeep. If you want to buy them, look on eBay. I got mine from Canada, used but filled for $40 each! Pray that this will be wasted money! I think every car should have one. If not for your own car, maybe you you can help somebody else. |

I carry a plain old extinguisher just in case. I know that the material in this unit may cause damage to my car when used but I always have the final say as to using it or not -- It's probably better than watching it go up in flames.... Halon (or the new environment friendly stuff) is better, but also more expensive. It also would be wise to have a battery disconnect because some fires seem to be related to shorted wiring -- which would be difficult to control without breaking the battery connection. |

I've got one in my TR:
but I didn't carry one in my ex-308GTS (although I personally replaced every rubber line/clamp in the entire fuel system after purchase and every decade or so). I think for the older cars you might be able to blame poor maintenance (e.g., old cracked fuel lines), but IMHO, a gremlin in the newer cars has enough immolation opportunity" (e.g., the spaghetti-like, high-pressure fuel system either leaking or spitting excess fuel into hot cats, complex electrical systems that transmit a surprising amount of power, etc.) that getting an extinguisher is not a bad idea. |

Having a $100 fire extinguisher is cheap compared to the car. I don't think it's uncommon for Ferraris to light up a little. Especially if you're doing track events. I tried several times to contact the guy selling them in the Ferrari mags, but he never called me back. Even rmrace didn't write me back, I guess extinguishers aren't big business, all though they advertise them. I have several club racing catalogs that have them, but they start about $250 for Halon. Right now I just have a $10 Wal Mart one, but mainly just so I could get on the track. I don't know if I would actually use it. |

How many of you guys have fire extinguishers installed in your cars? How real is the threat of fire in a Ferrari? Is it inherent, or just a result of poor maintenance? |
